I just realized that making wood shingles is the most economical way to grind woodcutting. You can make 16 kindlings from one log, or you can make six planks and turn those into 24 shingles, then make 8 kindlings from the resulting wood scrap.

How is the learning curve?

It's not very hard, but you will probably make a few dumb mistakes starting out. No worse than any other game honestly.

It's pretty damn easy. Most of your brainpower is going to go towards optimizing tasks.

The only difficulties you may have are figuring out some of the finer points of terraforming and mining, and perhaps learning crafting recipes, but you can easily consult the wiki for the latter.

How come that when you log out of your first character, you can't access it again?

Most things will come on their own. There's more to learn about what not to do. And most of that is not that you fuck things up in terms of mechanics or for yourself, but how you fuck things up for everyone else. Mostly from a settlement-planning viewpoint, and the general culture of not wasting resources.

The learning curve isn't too bad at all. It's worth pointing out that almost everything you make has quality attached to it. Quality depends on the tools you have used and how much effort you've sunk into getting skill points, and high quality things are better and desirable. So you get to enjoy the freedom of irrelevance for a while, as many needs are filled by various specialists.

So use that nice time where nothing depends on you to learn what not to do. Try not to take more than you need, learn what's commonly found and what's not, what's public and private, and if you can, try to use the lowest quality material that's around your skill level.

It also has trouble with names that aren't one word or contain weird characters.

You have to consult a wiki, like Minecraft, but the game itself is ez as long as you don't try to fight things starting out. The crafting is actually really simple once you understand it too.
