Having watched all of the Saw movies way too many times, let me break it down for you.

The first Jigsaw is John, who is a man who both loses his unborn child due to an accident and gets a fatal brain tumor. His method is basically the old lesson "That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger" taken to its most logical extreme. Every one of his games is potentially fatal, but ultimately survivable with enough willpower. Ultimately, John's Jigsaw games are meant to be cynical yet optimistic, proof that people are more than willing to brutalize and kill each other and themselves for one more day of life but those that prove their will to survive are made all the stronger for it. And, as far as the series goes, John's philosophy is proven right. John, as Jigsaw, practically overcomes death itself by becoming immortalized as one of America's most infamous serial killers (even making the front page of Time Magazine in one of the later movies.)

Due to the brain tumor, John realizes that he can't keep up his killing spree all by himself. So he recruits Amanda, a survivor of one of his previous games, to become his disciple and eventual successor. Unfortunately, Amanda completely lacks any form of optimism for her fellow man, so she makes her games inescapable. This makes her unsuited to be the next Jigsaw, and so John teaches her the ultimate lesson by rigging up a game where her inability to feel compassion leads to her death. (Saw 2 and 3 take place in this time period.)

At some point in the past, John finds an article in the paper about a Jigsaw killing that neither he nor Amanda orchestrated. After some digging, John finds out that an FBI Agent named Hoffman is responsible. John's pissed off at Hoffman at first because, like Amanda, Hoffman had rigged his game to be inescapable. Hoffman admits that he had a personal vendetta against the victim(his sister's boyfriend who beat her to death but got off because his friends covered for him) and chooses to follow John's philosophy (even to the extent of planning Amanda's eventual demise for her own faults.) Hoffman eventually takes up the mantle of Jigsaw after John kicks the bucket from cancer, but he's an imperfect imitator who still allows his own personal vendettas to get in the way of what Jigsaw was meant to represent. (John's Jigsaw targeted societal losers, suicidal people, hypochondriacs, and drug addicts, while Hoffman's Jigsaw almost solely targeted FBI agents and law enforcement officers who had pissed him off.) Saw 4 - 6 take place during this time, with flashbacks to Saw 1, 2, and 3, showing that Hoffman's been working with John and Amanda for quite a while

By Saw 6, Hoffman is starting to more fully become the Jigsaw that John had wanted him to be. However, there's been an unknown disciple working for Jigsaw that neither he nor Amanda knew about, Dr. Laurence Gordon (the guy who cut off his own foot at the end of Saw 1.) Turns out that John had found Dr Gordon after the end of Saw 1 and raised him back to health (even giving him a prosthetic foot for his troubles.) Unfortunately, the movie doesn't go into too deep of detail as to why Dr Gordon wanted to become the next Jigsaw (despite everyone on set knowing that Saw 6 was going to be the last in the franchise,) but he's still managed to find several disciples of his own to kidnap Hoffman and carry on the Jigsaw legacy of his own. Several of the traps that Gordon has been to shown to be behind (including the infamous Venus Flytrap) do wind up matching the original Jigsaw's (John's) MO of targeting the societal losers, drug addicts, et al. so he's arguably the best to keep the "Legend of Jigsaw" going. And his ability to recruit his own disciples shows he's a clearly better Jigsaw than Hoffman ever was (who chose to do everything by himself.)

No, it was like this. Thaos has volunteered to be a guardian of a secret that the gods are real, but they are man made. He tried to protect not so bad status quo and prevent people from destroying current, and creating new deities.

In the past it was sort of like with the Chaos Gods, deities were created based on peoples thoughts, beliefs and feelings, every tribe had their own gods some of them demanded terrible and disgusting things as an act of faith. Thaos came from civilization that was very advanced in "spirit science", they decided to bring peace and morality to sentient races. Thanks to their knowledge of how things work they were able to create sort of super powerful gods (compared to other savage made spirits). Then they went on a long and hard campaign to convert savage tribes to their new pantheon of gods that condemned immorality, and they succeed.

Nah, none of the Jigsaws' traps ever went that direction. But any trap that required more than basic medical knowledge is implied to be Dr Gordon's work (or at least in collaboration with John,) rather than Hoffman or Amanda's.
