It was also at a time when the need for special forces and special operations troops was too great for the military to handle. That is why the army started the X-ray program, recruits go straight into SF selection instead of needing to be an e-4 before going to Q School. Pretty sure the navy had to do the same thing to fill the SEAL pipeline.

They asked my entire BASIC class, Air Force, to try out for the Special Forces back in 96. Not a single one of the blacks passed the swimming and that's the only reason I tried out. We had to swim 10 laps (not even an Olympic sized pool), 50 push ups, 50 sit ups, 10-15 pull ups and some other shit I can't remember.

Only one person who passed wanted to actually do it out of 5 from my "flight" including me. We all had "guaranteed" jobs that we waited to get when we enlisted. Met the dude 7 months later, he broke his ankle with 2 weeks left of training and decided to go into his "Guaranteed" job since it was at Keesler MS anyway (he didn't think his ankle could handle doing another 2 weeks of that shit again).

In a way I do regret doing it since my Tech school was just a waste of time in the classroom since I had to learn OJT when I got to my first duty station anyway, and I lifted and worked out every day after class anyway.

This was for Combat Controllers and Pararescue. CCs were some great lads, hung out with a bunch overseas - real low key good people who ate jarheads for breakfast.

I had this good friend tim mcveigh, he was the most gung hoe special forces recruit I have ever seen, he got a sprane and dropped out of special forces. Then later he was filmed working at a secret military base when he was supposedly in the private sector. After he bombed some feral building somewhere (and they stopped search and rescue to allow a van to pull up to extract a bunch of Clinton documents) he went to prison. On death row he told the guy in the next cell that he was an under cover agent and would not actually be killed. When the injection happened there where several irregularities and many of the witnesses said they saw him still breathing. His body was intercepted on the way to cremation.

Success rate for Air Force was 14% total back in the 90s. Figure 1/60 from my initial class made it and washed out due to injury in the end. The environment and instructors MAKE YOU WANT to succeed from what I have heard. The #1 reason for wash outs was injury. #2 was family emergency, you can re-apply but start a week behind from where you left to get back up to speed - and most people don't want to get back into the grind after 3-5 days of eating real food, sleeping in a real bed and getting real sleep again - it breaks the mental conditioning.

Supposedly if the instructors think you can eventually make it, they will let you try as many times as you want when you get washed back, most don't go past 2 washes.

It's not an easy life, there are two modes. Deploying and getting ready to deploy. Even with no girl/wife or kids that shit is for the birds - especially when your pay/rank doesn't automatically go up with each deployment and the enlistment bonuses don't compare to the private sector.

They even started a program where kids that wanted to be SEALs would be placed on delayed entry and enrolled in a program ran by retired SEALs where they trained with them 2 times a week for 6 months to a year until the SEALs approved them as being 'capable of passing BUD/s before shipping off to boot. Was a pretty good program.. By the time I shipped off for boot I was running the SEAL PRT with 1/4 mile swim in 8 minutes, 120 pushups 120 situps in 2 minutes each, 22 pullups and 1 1/2 mile run in 7 minutes. Still washed out though fucked up my achilles tendon Doesnt matter what kind of shape you are in a lot of the shit is luck. Everyone I went in with was in as good or better shape than me and this one dude I thought for sure could make it had his femur snap in half while running.

Funny thing is. After all the time I spent training with the SEALs I had to reclass as a corpsman, cuz fuck being stuck on a boat, and had the opportunity of trying Marine RECON.. and PT wise RECON was tougher by a lot. Compared to the SEALs RECON are a bunch of fucking sadists. Their PT was so tough that after the first pt session we went into the hq building and were stood up against a wall and they came running over to me "WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU STANDING LIKE THAT?" "HM1, I… I CANT SEE" I was completely blind for 45 minutes. Ive done some hardcore workouts, I tried BUD/s, since then I've deployed and been in combat.. Training with RECON was the only time I ever went blind from pt.

If you go by class, as in guys that recycle to the next class are counted as not passing the current class, ~340 start and a phenomenal class will see 8-12 pass phase 3, and thats pretty unheard of. My class was pretty fucking good to go and I dont even know who passed if anyone.

In the end I made 3 attempts for that life before saying fuck it I'll just do the infantry and be the most motivated fuck in the battalion. Wound up working with the SEALs on a couple missions and I have a buddy that was attached to Marine RECON on deployment. From what I saw of the SEALs working with them… They are a bunch of chucklefucks who dont belong in combat operations, afterall thats not really what they train for. We did a couple raids on with them, arrested basically a whole town one night. And then everyone arrested was released and then the relatively quiet AO that we had turned into a hotbed.

As for RECON my buddy told me a bit of what that was like.. He had 2 very rough deployments and his time attached to RECON was the only thing he would not talk about. One day we got drunk and he let me know a tiny bit. They were being engaged en route to their mission and they were leaving wounded men to die "we'll get their bodies when the mission is over". He eventually killed himself and I know that was a huge part of it.

Combat controllers can just transform into Air Traffic Controllers if they can't/don't want to deploy anymore, just like PJs can transition into hospital paramedics/Physician Assistants if they get burned out. To be honest, Combat Controllers are the most impressive to me out of all the Special Forces, they embed with every branch and foreign government, have to pass ATC school which has a 60 percent wash out rate - ahead of EOD, and have to attain the same skill set as AST, Airborne, Dive and basic Electronics for their gear.

There have been several huge scandals involving East Bay police from multiple cities over the last few years. Whatever it is it'll involve more than BPD.
