I'm all for romance in RPGs, and relationships in general, because human interaction is, in large part, what shapes a person, and thus a character as well.

My main gripe is how badly integrated the romances are into the game(play). You talk to the person you happen to fancy a few times, pick the right choices, maybe do a quest or two, and bam, you're now star crossed lovers, and outside minimal dialogue at certain points in the game and canned responses whenever you approach the character again, there is fuckall to do with the romance afterwards.

It's not "natural", it's a result of the environment. You can't magic replacement level of birthrates into being, you have to meet certain conditions to make it possible, and even then, it's incredibly difficult to engineer a boost in birthrates once they've fallen past a certain point.

Bioware used to be okayish in that department.
I still remember some of the stuff from BG 2 and how it was implemented and it simply worked since it felt naturally.
