ITT: Holla Forums lists the most patrician of the Video Games

Inbetween mindless arcade fun and pretentious* hipster attention seeking none games there is a special little valley on the graph. Games that are art, that do make you think about a specific subject matter the creators worked hard to craft and at the same time remain solid videogames.

Which games meet this criteria for you? What games would you recommend as real art that is also an amazing game instead of the hipster walking simulator wank hipsters make because making real games is too hard?

Pics related should be obvious.

*Pretention in this case is the act of acting or making something knowing it has absolutely no meaning pretending it has depth and therefore greater merit to fool the general public and does not set out to do what is intent i.e: make a work of art that can be enjoyed entirely as a solid videogame if you ignore the artistry involved. See amnesia, a machine for pigs.

The ones that i like.

This. Everything is plebeian garbage.

Step aside, niggers.

But does it include "come ouuuut to plaaaaayyyaaayyyyyy!"

This is important.

undertale :^)

but honestly undertale is as good, if not better than the games you posted op.
:^)

I think a key problem is that many people want to hold criteria against video games that are held against movies or books. The only problem is, they are not movies or books.

I think criticisms of narratives hold against all three because they all contain narratives. And games have mechanics that can be used to intertwine the narratives with the mechanics of the medium (in the same way film and novels do). But I feel like this is held up as the artistic quality, which means the criteria people have for games as art is a quality that is incidental to the medium itself.

I think Super Mario Bros. is a work of art. It is elegant in almost every way. From controls, to game play, to overall experience, to difficulty curve. Art style, sound, and overall presentation.

Do you see what I mean? To evaluate video game, it needs to be evaluated on the qualities that are related to the medium itself, and not simply incidental qualities. So something like a powerful narrative is only relevant insofar as it is intertwined with the medium, and not just the narrative itself.

Not that I am accusing anyone here of doing this, but I think it's an important distinction all the same when starting one of these conversations.

I was so pissed off about the lack of gameplay in that shit.
Didn't know that it was made by the guys who made that walking simulator(name eludes me).
Thank god, I didn't pay for it.

This should be the only description necessary to define games as art, at least in the classical sense. The modern conception of art is a very, very new idea.

That said, sympathetic as I am to compiling games that deliver a message effectively by using the medium, you know this thread isn't going to go well.

See I'd disagree, MGS3 is a nearly self-contained story, it's excellent but it's not some deep introverting think piece, that's MGS2, the absolute, definitive, near perfect criticism of the industry, gamers, and video games as a medium.

If it hadn't dropped the ball hard on the game play department by using SH like camera angles it would've probably be THE MGS rather than 3. But even in it's flawed state as a game it's a better artistic statement,.

I disagree on the basis that every medium is nothing more than a link between creator(s) and end user. Heavely narrative/writing reliant games like MGS2, Planescape or purer games like SMB2, Devil May Cry are all shining example of vidya, because all of those manage to nearly perfectly carry the message of the author to the user, from MGS2 post-modern analysis of the decadence of vidya, to the simple "have fun" of SMB2 or the "Have Stylish fun" of Devil May Cry(PS2)

The top-down camera in MGS2 is the essentially the same as it was in the previous three games, works fine, and is not even remotely like SH.

The camera in SH is also brilliantly executed in every way.

...

Thank you for proving my point, in that the narrative is only relevant insofar as it interacts with the mechanics of the medium. They aren't great games because they have great stories, they are great games with great stories.

The ultimate test of this is: if you took the story out, writing and all, and made it a book, would it be better or worse than the game?

I haven't played any of the RE games yet. Should I play the gamecube remake on my Wii or the pc remake?

Depends on what you prefer.

Or made it into any other medium. Team Silent borrowed a lot of cinematic influence into the trilogy and self-described the games as interactive films, before "cinematic" carried the stigma it does now. Although the games are relatively linear in terms of the narrative, they couldn't possibly be made into films. There's no way the detail in the environmental storytelling would translate into film and the pacing would be completely wrong, not to mention the removal of interactivity would undermine the subtle tension.

For story-heavy RPGs like Torment, or Pathologic, I don't think it could even be translated into a printed medium, it would have to be a choose-your-own-adventure novel twice the length of War and Peace.

The HD Remaster on PC has some history of performance issues, but it should be simple to fix. If I recall correctly it was just a .ini edit.

Yes

Well. It makes you think what it truly means to be a hero. To not only face people above your pay grade but be willing to stand your ground regardless of what the outcome may mean. Quite honestly a hero team hasn't touched my cold and callus heart in a long time the way these heroes did.

Oh come on Holla Forums, quit being so edgy. These are true patrician "games".

anybody who disagrees can go eat shit

The Yankee box art is awful but it's a damn fine game

God I hope Last Guardian won't be shit

...

I play games i like

...

Notice the many ps2 titles in here

...

It's obscure even on Holla Forums, so that automatically means its good.

...

Also, pic related.
I bet none of you patricians even played this one.

I'm a simple man.

STEP ASIDE FAGS

Why not name Twin Snakes while you're at it, faggot?

You were clearly not paritican enough.

...

MGS1, 2 and 3 are all top tier games, the series took a nosedive beyond that though.

...

...

It really is casuals, nostalgiafags and contrarians on this board

At least post a videogame faggot.

Imagine that i am not baiting you and actually had fun with it, that you won't have.

And that makes 13 actual patrician games

My nigger.

Should I play the whole trilogy or just infinity?

My nomination is Sengoku Rance. It had serviceable story with interesting lore once you take into account all of the shit that's in the Rance series, a varied cast of colorful characters and a main character that's fucking great, a hype as fuck soundtrack, excellent, simple gameplay mechanics that become more complex the more you keep playing, a difficulty setting that is just right for your first playthrough (even though some may need to restart when they realize they did retarded decisions) and lots of little nods and extras that encourage you to play the game over and over again to see what you could have missed, as well as NG+ extras. It also had a great way to integrate porn into the gameplay without sacrificing either too much.

It's one of the best examples of a game that had quality in all of its areas and then some more. The only thing that could use some improving is the art, and even then it's not godawful.

okay, shit gameplay, no replay value, but thats how you tell a story in fucking video games
wat
nig you said patrician
1/10, i took the bait
