I've done nothing.
The biggest error of the ludite is denying the new and secluding himself.
The world changes. Change with it or perish. How's that for edgy agnst?
The Net let's me touch upon a billion lives, see places I couldn't otherwise and learn new things everyday. You can discover how to make IED's 10 minutes after you learned how to cook a different sort of lasagna.
You also get access to a giant network of minds, chattering and tittering about ideas, both new and old. The balance of ideology pushes ever onward and at no time is the prevailing idea the same it was 5 minutes before.
What you, OP, discovered is that with unfiltered access to information, the Net tends to bury everything in a giant pile of shit.
I always laughed at that old saying "4chan is the asshole of the internet". Sure, it was funny back then, but most people on 4chan already knew the internet was a shitheap. Being the asshole doesn't really made us any worse than the rest.
So, what do you do? How do you listen to a thousand voices at the same time and not go insane?
Let me give you a practical example.
DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING ON THIS SITE
dllrepair.com/dll/download.php/d3dx9_43.dll/d3dx9_43.htm
Sometimes, I've had need to find a particular DLL file to make something run on my computer.
This presents a lot of challenges (like making sure you're getting the right version of the file, avoiding malware) and other assorted funsies.
Look at that site I've linked.
See the big "DOWNLOAD NOW" button?
That's adware.
On the right, see the "FREE DOWNLOAD" button?
That's adware.
In fact, I'd wager 90% of the Holla Forumsacks here have seen sites like these. And a lot of you know that the blue, underlined "d3dx9_43.dll" text leads to the actual download of the file you want. You can hover the mouse over it and see the link it takes you to on the bottom.
Now, what you do on this site is a simple filter. You know big buttons with "DOWNLOAD" are fake, always. You know the download is still there somewhere because they wouldn't have clicks and stay up if they didn't.
You just get used to it, develop your own "filter", your habits.
Same goes for identifying phishing attempts on your mail.
Installing a no-script addon for your browser. Learning how to google certain keywords and avoiding others.
Getting to know what sites are reliable and what sites are shit.
The point of this long winded rant is that you shouldn't unplug. You should resist. You should learn how to use the Net without it using you. You can let yourself be treated like a product. It sure is convenient sometimes, I won't lie.
But without some basic filtering skills, you'll get lost in a swamp of digital shit, relevant and useful information is locked away and most important, you'll be alone.
Always remember that there are more people like you out there. And we're all adrift on this piss ocean. You can flip your raft and call it quits. Or you can paddle with all your might, salute your brothers when you pass by them and sail on to another land.
Of course, you can just turn off your computer, let go, shut your eyes and pretend the world is perfect and peaceful.
Wouldn't that be great, user?
You fucking disgust me.
