What went right?

What went right?

We were all kids then

...

The big increase in mechanics from first gen.

Great overworld with a fun atmosphere, pokemon were still very mysterious and the world was mysterious, lots of content, actual plot buildup, originality in monster designs.

Fantastic games. Soulsilver and Heartgold were amazing remasters, too.

1. Massive improvements to the gameplay.
2. Actual things to do after beating elite 4.

Those are physically some of the nicest gameboy cartridges

Sad that they stopped having your Pokemon follow behind you after those two. When I played Red/Blue/Silver/Gold, I wished I could see my Pokemon outside of battles, just so I could feel like Ash.

That's what Yellow was for.

Yeah I know, but I think only Pikachu followed you.

I wish clear plastic would be a thing again.

POKE GAY MAN XDDDDDDDDDDDD

It felt like more than just a sequel. You had 100 new Pokemon, but you also had the original 151, too. You had a new region, but you also had Kanto, too. Also, pic related gave all of us feels.

Pokemon Stadium 2 is the best gen 2 game.

Show me your Battle Station

Day and Night

The story whole thing was childish but there was a somewhat mature plot, also the fact you could go back to the previous region after the game felt like the story didn't just end, there was many thing to explore and you could see the people from the previous generation having changed a little, silver also appeared in the after game and his personality changed after getting rekt on multiple occasion. The game didn't just stop after the elite 4, it was kind of alive.

slutfu

You can cut glass with that chin

You already know who

I don't see that coming back due to the 3d overworld they plan on using but it's a shame they didn't keep it for the gen 5 games at the least

Gen 5 was the best gen, prove me wrong.
It didn't add much in the way of mechanics, but it had the most solid games without the glaring faults each other mainline release has.

Gen 5 was similar to 3.

A "reboot"

Reminder that Iwata is responsible for having the 2 regions available in those games. Masterful Work.

And that's where I realized NoA censorship was a thing back in the day, when I played a crudely translated version of the original jap game.

Except, unlike gen 3, it wasn't steaming hot garbage.
I just say that because I had Ruby as a child and not Emerald.

But unlike gen 3 it didn't cut out connectivity to previous gens.

...

...

Gen 4 and 5 were actually the best gens since 2nd.

Gen 4 for all the cool mechanics and evolutions to preexisting pogeyman it added. And also it had 10/10 worldbuilding and heartgold/soulsilver.

Gen 5 not so much as 4, but it still had really good worldbuilding and a few new cool moves and mons. But this is true for bw2 only, old bw1 were poop with the stupid mechanic of new pokemon only.

Gen 6 was dumb as shit with the stupid megaevos.

I have high hopes for gen 7, but i know i'm gonna be disappointed.

HG/SS is easily the second best pokemon game, but B&W2 would have been FAR above the rest if they had just let my fucking pokemon walk behind me.
It's such a small addition, but it really goes a long way in helping you get attached to your pokemon. Is anyone else a faggot that actually checks to see what personalities their pokemon have?

Oh, and shooting movies is the best side gimmick in any pokemon game I've seen.
Contests were always gay as fuck and I don't even remember what they had in gen 4. Also contests? I don't remember.

nostalgia

HGSS added nothing new other than remake the games with new GRAFIX
nostalgiafags bought it as expected to bring in the cash for innovation in genV

No. That will never work today for so many reasons.
You have a game like Super Mario Bros. on the NES. That was made in 6502 ASM. Or something like Kirby's Adventure on the Gameboy (the only game in ASM he worked on [citation needed]) which was made in Z80 ASM. These consoles have very simple processors, which is why they are so limited when it comes to the games.
You take something like the Wii U and you try to make a game coded in ASM (because the Wii U uses the PowerPC architecture, I assume that it uses PowerPC ASM) and you won't get very far. Attempting to create a 3D game like the new Zelda with ASM would be 1. Near impossible and 2. Even if it were, it would be very time consuming to create, let alone optimize. ASM is not a language that is relevant for game creation these days. Even if Iwata was around, he would be far too old to give a shit about attempting to do something like that.
Sorry to get your hopes up, user. But it'll never happen.
Also nice fucking DeviantArt picture you homo.

One of the things that struck me right from the getgo is when your rival is clearly being sketchy as fuck peaking into the professor's lab, and kicks you away when he notices you. As a kid I followed the anime alot so seeing actual human on human violence that wasn't a retarded Team Rocket plot really caught my attention.

stopped playing pokemon after that fight

felt that it couldn't be topped

sadly I was right

I still don't understand why kris wasn't in the remake

That simply isn't true
maybe if you are a jap or glitch the game out

I don't care about all of them I just want the bugs

See throughs are haram
I had this bad boy, shared my best days with him

...

I have both, I picked the clear plastic one up years later though. I've got one of these somewhere too.

That's fuckin' gold thanks man.

you born in the 2000s kids wouldn't understand how awesome see-through meme used to be, go watch Ben 10 and wait for mommy to cook you dinner you lil' faggot

I just wanted muh vidya to be closer to the metal.

That fucking feel when you buy a ticket for that cruise and enter a whole other map, I wish more games had that "you thought the game was over?" moments.

What went right?

This.

If you look at Gen 5's pokedex, and look at Gen 1's pokedex, you can find a 1:1 matchup in terms of concept or typing in about 90% of the cases.

Most game consoles since the DS or Wii onward have run on a virtual console anyways. Polling registers and such is now definitely considered archaic

I was born in 1998 and I always thought the see-through Game Boy models were retarded.

Fuck, I meant 1988.

That's quite the exaggeration you're making.

HAHA too late now you undera…oh

He's right though.

Odd generations = fresh/reboot games
Even generations = new features/mechanics

1 = Tons of Pokémon, barebones
2 = New mechanics, fewer new pokemon
3 = Tons of new Pokémon, lack of features
4 = New mechanics, fewer new pokemon
5 = Tons of new Pokémon, lack of features
6 = New mechanics, fewer new pokemon

Following this formula, it looks like gen 7 will be another reboot with tons of new Pokémon but no groundbreaking/revolutionary mechanics.

No, you cannot find a 1:1 matchup in terms of concept or typing in about 90% of the gen 5's pokemon.
Also, are we forgetting that gen 5 revamped experience gain and tossed in shaking bushes so grinding weak pokemon isn't so much of a pain in the ass? There's a lot of little things gen 5 brought to the table, just nothing as big as fairy types, mega evolutions, or the physical/special split.

I felt like it was because they didn't try and introduce some gamechanging mechanic they had a lot more time to just go and refine a lot of small aspects and work on the pokemon design.
Let's be real, gen 4 had some really weak designs and the battle speed was atrocious.

It just built on the old game's success while adding a lot of balance features and new content that made you want to explore.

I don't know a kid that WASN'T psyched to go back to Kanto and defeat the gym leaders there. Especially since they had their own themes. Albeit, the Kanto region's location was a bit dry in terms of scripted events and story it was fun just to re-explore a place that had so many good memories. One of the only games that I feel got the "Re-explore" concept right.

Good rival, pokemon design was good, level design was neat, gym leaders were different but good.

Nothing beats backwards compatibility, rechargeable batteries, a backlight, and being far more portable. As much as I love my gameboy colour, I mostly use my SP nowadays.

Oh, jesus.

No, he is right regarding the 1:1 matchups.

Granted, every game has a generic bird, rodent and Mew clone. But gen 5 has much more rehashes.

Timburr = Machop line
Swoobat = Zubat line
Roggenrola = Geodude line
Haxxorus = Tyranitar line
Blitzle = electric Ponyta
Drilbur = Sandshrew line
Tympole = Poliwag line
Throw & Sawk = Hitmonchan & Hitmonlee
Klink = Magnemite line
Bouffalant = Tauros

it goes on and on

Baby Pokemon.

Gen 1 is still best gen.

You're also forgetting HGSS Misty.

I liked the quality of life additions and the spritework. The gameplay was faster than in Gen 4 (which had ungodly long animations for moves), reusable TMs made them more viable during the story, and some of the online features were nice (while it was still up.) That said, I never beat any of the Gen 5 games, they just couldn't hold my attention.
If I could have the Gen 2 or Gen 3 remakes in Gen 5's engine, it'd be perfection.

...

Mystery
It was full of things you didnt understand or even knew. alpha ruins, the eerie as fuck radio signal, lapras, Lugia and ho-oh… The game lost a lot of its magic once I discovered everything on the internet

Plus what everyone else said. Gen 2 is at least on pair with gen 1

I was stupid back then and sold my GBC for a GBA game.

GOAT gym leader

Pressed new reply too soon:

My man. I was always so worried I could break one of the components, even though I dropped it a hundred times

This tiny thing will always be my first childhood crush

Also, just watch all the pokemon videos from that channel, there was so much content on gold/silver for pokemon standars, plus all the stuff he ignored

I like that you've conveniently forgot about how I said "concept or typing" in my original post.

That's like saying the Magnemite-equivalent doesn't count because there's no steel type in Gen 1.

Are zebras rehashes of horses in real life, too?

Yes, god is a shit developer. You even have to pay with your life to get access to heaven, supposedly one of the best areas.

...

...

Yet Kanto is baren
And only about 20 of them available during the main game.
Oh boy, can't wait to wait until 8PM to catch a Murkrow
0-0 = 0
Also some of the worse

Nigga what?

We are talking about concepts.

Gen 5 rehashes concepts and designs.

The reason that people liked the gen is because it was really great to bug type users.

Leavanny and her great attacks and shit
Scolipede for being strong and sanic

etc.

It added great features, great mons and shit.

So what if there's parallels to other mons? It's 5 gens in, for fuck's sake. At least the newer mons are actually GOOD in fights.

Your basis is purely on art design and even then they vastly differ in design and even art style.

So what?

New original content plus AN ENTIRE REGION OF FAN SERVICE.

Seriously, they even let you go to the truck in Vermilion City docks.

You are talking about concepts.
A lightning zebra is not the same as a fire horse. A rock dude is not the same as a crystal monster. A bull is not a buffalo, a magnet is not a gear, a shrew is not a mole.
Deal with it.

They're not rocks, Marie!

There's always the DS remakes.
sentret, hoppip, spinarak, ledyba, dunsparace, teddiursa, mareep, wooper, unown, phanpy, skarmory, gligar, chinchou, snubbull, hoothoot, heracross, aipom, pineco, wobbuffet, natu, sudowoodo, mantine, and any evolutions those pokemon have can be caught in the main game.
well, you're right on that point, it's just that Gen 2 did it first.
You're right about that as well.

Yanma is my nigga.

...

Larvitar isn't Crystal exclusive

Source: I owned gold and caught them all the time in that one mountain cave area that bridged the regions.

...

It's just amazing, you can't really say anything else that it did right that hasn't already been said in this thread.
My favorite gen, and right after that is gen 5

Hi

Chikorita used RAZOR LEAF
It's super effective!
Totodile fainted!

That's not funny.

ur an fgt

...

And that's just the tip of the ICEBERG user!

here we go

Got you covered.

The feeling of the setting was amazing.

Everything feels like the best parts of the 1950s. Rural countrysides juxtaposed to small but explosively growing metropolitan areas. Children run around doing stuff they'd never be allowed to in today's climate. Men wear tophats with their suits unironically. The biggest bad in the land is the Italian mafia. The original art was a sleepy pastel haze, nostalgic when it was new. The anachronisms are distinct but setting-enabling rather than defining (Pokeballs, superscience, data-matter storage systems, etc). The music evokes ragtime. The big attractions are gambling halls (run by the mob), biking, and a luxury cruise liner. The supernatural is present but not explainable or ubiquitous. The monsters looked like cryptozoology instead of Digimon, except the ones that were very clearly a breed apart and intrinsically special. And it carried on much of the feeling of its predecessor, because the two were originally conceptualized as the same game.

There is a depth of heart in the first two Pokemon generations, especially the second, that I've never seen replicated elsewhere. The setting is Halcyon days with drama for flavor. It's Yotsuba& with cockfighting. A Miyazaki film you can play.

The idyllic and melancholy is unmatched, yeah.

I feel like they tried to recreate this comfy atmosphere with gen 4 Sinnoh.

I feel as though they succeeded in platinum.

Such a cozy feeling, right?

Iwata was still alive

Sinnoh did a good job of trying to create that atmosphere, but it fails a bit. I think that's mainly because of the art style being just different enough since HGSS also lack that atmosphere GSC had. Not that I hate Gen 4, but in terms of atmosphere I don't think it topped Gen 2. Still a good attempt though.

Much better then Gen's 5 and 6. Gen 5 felt way too Urban, and Gen 6 had nice Autumn routes but it was a clusterfuck in terms of everything else. Also I hated the fact they thought it was a good idea to cram literally every Pokemon in each route. There's no focus, it's like a bad rom hack.

What do you mean?

...

That's how pokemon games are set up.
Odd numbers add in the pokemon and tries to freshen up the series, even numbers try to refine the game.

That was my first system besides PC. Man, the endless hours I spent using that thing.

Didn't actually own a Pokemon until Sapphire.

Like every other Pokemon gen, it's got a number of flaws. However, also like every other Pokemon gen excluding 6th, it's does well at creating good, unique experience.

Gen 2>5>3=1>6>4

I never played gen 1, Silver was my first game

...

A lot of the Kalos routes just feel like they took random Pokemon and shoved them in so they could say they had a massive regional Pokedex. It just ended up making the region feel like an awkward mess in terms of Pokemon selection. Also if you were looking for a specific Pokemon you'd be there a while since rarely does a Pokemon have an appearance over 20%,

Here are two early game routes, one from Crystal and one from XY. While Crystal has more Pokemon, it also spreads them evenly throughout the day. Also, the selection feels more focused then XYs. Pikachu was forced in because he's a fan favorite, Dunsparce is supposed to live in caves and dark areas, Azurill is a baby Pokemon and having them in the wild defeats their entire point of existence, Burmy are supposed to live in trees, the selection just seems awkward.

I've heard a few people complain about this as of late, and I never understood it. Day/Night Pokemon were such a great feature and it's a shame they cut them after Gen 4. Pokemon Catching is supposed to be part of the game, you should have to hunt them. Having them appear at times of the day adds far more then it takes from the game. It makes the routes more unique, it can make playthroughs slightly different depending on when you play, it adds some nice flavor and realism, and it's just so cool.

People say it's artifical waiting, but Jesus is it really that bad to have to wait a few hours to catch Hoothoot? There's nothing in the game that's mandatory to wait for to complete the main game, and if you want to 100% I don't see why it's a problem to have to work for it. There's enough content in the game to make waiting go by quickly.

I just hated 4. I think it had the worst designs of any pokemon and I can barely recall what Team Galactic 's plan was

Most of that shit is just superfluous. I'd rather have a greater variety of Pokemon always available at the cost of less potential encounters per Pokemon than sanctioning them off to specific times of day. In the end, if I'm looking for a specific Pokemon, I'd potentially just have to go through some more encounters in the former whereas in the latter I could end up waiting for several hours just to get the chance to find the Pokemon. Being forced to wait is not analogous with "hunting" or "working" - it's pointless.

Oh.
Yeah, I never played X/Y, so I can't really comment on anything as specific as that.
Black and White 2 didn't have this problem, but then we've got a whopping three pokemon to pick from your first time through here.
This is why I'm playing Blaze Black 2.

...

So in other words you're a casual? I mean jesus, it's not like it's days, just wait a few hours, or get a different Pokemon.

Crystal did alleviate that problem of Gen 2 Pokemon only in post game some. Pokemon like Sneasel got a bump.

It's pointless since people are just going to change their clocks to get the pokemon they want anyway.

Good luck changing the GSC clock, it's a bitch.

Also, why? That's like cheating, and only kids cheat. They're like people who time travel in Animal Crossing instead of just sitting back and smelling the flowers.

You're missing the point, that's why they didn't keep it after gen 4.
Let's weigh our options here.

I like day/night pokemon. It's a good concept and it helps you get into the world.
But I get why they took it out.

It's not like I'm asking to be handed the pokemon, I just don't want to jump through pointless hoops just to get to them.

I'm gonna be honest I really like Gen2 however I really can't stand how easy it is and how underleveled everything feels when you get to the elite 4.

There are people who think making breeding easier is casual, statements like this doesn't surprise me.

Absolutely nothing.

Besides the pokeporn.

Woah woah woah. They didn't take it out because they thought it was a bad idea. First we need to establish that. Game Freak took it out because they're lazy as fuck. Same reason they took out

And I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty of other good features they've cut. Anyways

Or you could just do something else. Raise a Pokemon, breed, catch a different Pokemon you need. Just manage your time.

It's not like catching Pokemon is difficult. It's barely a hoop. Just learn to be patient. It's easy since you just gotta take it easy.

Who plays Pokemon just to fucking rush through it? If you're playing normally, it'll take a while to catch all 151/251/etc anyways, not to mention all the dungeons to explore, post game content, multiplayer, and Pokemon Stadium games. Just embrace it and have fun instead of trying to 100% right then and there. Gen 2 was made to be a relaxing easy going one.

I wasn't.

Did you not read my next fucking line where I said to come back later you illiterate nigger?

Iwata
(-o-;)

Leave and come back later? I wasn't sure if you meant leave (the game) and come back later, or in game leave and come back later.

What did you think "stop playing" meant?

I thought you accidentally repeated yourself tbh fam

Embarrassing.

Even without the desire to 100% the game, just being forced to wait an arbitrary amount of time to find a specific Pokemon is just pointless - plain and simple. You can partake in other activities in the meantime, yes, but the fact that you have to distract yourself from that is just bad. Why should I be forced to have fun such a specific pace that the game wants me to?

I shouldn't be that incoherent yet.

Well, hold on, user, I wouldn't call it an arbitrary amount of time. It was supposed to be tied to a real life clock so that you could only catch nocturnal pokemon at night and stuff like that. It's not stuff that doesn't make sense.

Ah, yes. The Pokémon Stadium experience. I don't miss that game at all.

Clearly they stopped trying

I will never experience such joy again.

...

...

Nigga it was about the world-building and designs, which RBY nailed to a T.

...

pokemon is casual it's not meant for high level play

This is true

The world championships in black and white 2 were great as well.

TECHNOLOGY

...

while 4's best part was the remakes and PMD, you're right, what the fuck WAS Galactic's plan? To create a new universe or some shit like that?

This is poisonous logic.

Okami does it. 3 or 4 times

This is the 3rd time you've made this thread, OP

Team Rocket = Mafia
Team Magma & Aqua = Eco Terrorists
Team Galactic = New World Order society
Team Plasma = Hippies
Team Flare = Fashion Nazis

Not bad user

You're not half bad either

The only reason I liked Whitney better was all the time I spent trying to beat her, months of bonding

Isn't there a chart similar to this, only for OR/AS?
I can't find it anywhere.

I still have my blue one that survived a car crash and dropping it as a kid, and it works perfectly. Gameboys were the shit.

both my weapon of choice
same colors too

Everything

story time?

Those were the fucking days…

If you want.
>Go cross-country driving with mom and brother to east coast constantly. Starting from commiefornia
>Car flips 5 times imagine being in a washing machine going round and round
Somehow my gameboy and my family survived.
