Sword Stepping

So, one VERY unusual thing I noticed during today's Zelda footage was that, when Link is hitting enemies, his swings don't appear to have him move forward. Dark Souls, Witcher, Dynasty Warriors and pretty much every single third person melee combat game always has the character take a step forward each swing.

However sometimes (embed related) Link did take a step forward. Seems to be related to whether or not something was hit (although he was also moving forward while the enemy was airborne during the slow motion attack).

Anyone know of other games that took this sort of "it depends" approach? Some games where the character never moves while attacking?

If I had to guess it's actually based on whether or not the player was holding forward on the control stick while attacking.

I doubt it, I don't think there are people who even let go of the control stick ever while fighting. At least I never saw a game where you had to be conscious about it.

It looks like it's based on how close you are to whatever you're trying to hit, and elevation might play a factor in that

Had that thought too, wish I could find segments where Link isn't targeting anything and just swinging at enemies.

It's probably based on whether or not the stick is being held forward or something of the like. We won't know unless somebody asks the developers or gets their hands on a demo.

In almost all previous 3D Zelda games, whether a vertical slash, horizontal slash, or jab is performed is dependent on targeting and the direction the stick is held.

Link is an animal in this game, those bokos dindu nuffin. They were just eating and protecting their turf.

It looks like the player was blocked by the enemies hitbox. You can see Link trying to move forward from his feet animations, they stay consistent. I don't think I like that, it limits the potential for combat scenarios, even being able to move an enemy backwards while striking them, whether it deals damage or not, creates an interesting flow with the combat. This way, you have a means to control area, push enemies and punish them if they fall off ledges, as an example.

Enclave, a 2002 game.

I thought so too but there seems to be a more complex calculation going on. At one point in the stream an enemy was airborne and Link was swing and moving forward but he was being slowed down by the enemy.

Thanks, I'll have a look.

Link is the dindu in this game, just going around stealing everyone's shit or killing them for it

Holy christ are you guys serious, Link since N64 doesn't do the step forward schtick other characters do in other games unless you do specific moves, and even then it's a half step before he returns back to his position most of the time.

that Audrey Drake sure has some nice tits.

I remember people complaining that you got to rescue all sages in Ocarina just so they could build a rainbow bridge that allowed you to reach the final boss.

Satisfied now?

yes

Holy shit, that's really interesting actually

A dindu nudist arsonist

is there attack cancelling? The hammer seemed like they were stopping the hit animation to start another one pretty quickly.
