Personally I think they just seem to see where the tide's going, and that portraying SJWs and PC bullshit for what it is is what their audience (the actual audience) would find funny and/or informative, since they might be starting to notice that sort of bullshit but not really identified what it was yet.

I don't mind them that much, but there is a big difference between the older "random bullshit episode of the week" style and the "lampooning current events" style they do now. I give video games the credit for my early childhood reading ability. I never was interested in books or novels but the old games didn't have voice acting so you had to read everything. Nah, it was Cleveland Show's fault. Luanne's VA dying was unfortunate, but the show could easily have continued without her, since she'd long been relegated to being more of a side character. It would have truly been unrecoverable if, say, Peggy or Bobby's VAs died.

You can look it up, Fox's KotH cancellation announcement also said that Cleveland Show would be replacing it. The announcement was in 2008, while Brittany Murphy died in 2009. The only justice is that everyone hated Cleveland so much it didn't last long.

The sad part is, that's not how the show was originally intended to go. Not just with Bill, but the show was intended to age all the characters and develop them over time. For instance, Bobby and the other kids would go off to high school eventually, instead of them stopping aging after Joseph went through puberty.

I think that earlier on, this was to be the case with Bill. At the end of the seventh season, he got into a relationship with Kahn's mother, and the episode even ended happily with the two of them reconciling and continuing to date. Then the eighth season rolls around and it's dismissed with an off-hand comment, and she's never seen again. I guess the writers figured that if Bill were actually happy, they couldn't keep writing "Bill is a sadsack who gets himself into trouble thanks to his depression" or "Bill has a relationship go wrong" episodes.

It was very rare that anything shook up the status quo after that, the only notable exceptions I can think of being Nancy stopping cheating on Dale and Luanne and Lucky getting married. I guess Mike Judge just went along with it since he could still make a good show out of it, but it's a shame he didn't just get to do what he originally wanted to.
