How do we make indie gaming great again?

My biggest problem with the state of Indie gaming is the fact that it isn't a fundamentally bad. It's just how it's being dominated by the progressive hipster clique and how it prides itself on retro pandering and stagnant conventions such as procedural generation, chiptune music and half baked Metroidvania level design.

So how do we purge this cancer and bring the Indie gaming industry to its potential? How do we make indie gaming great again?

Many of these games are actually free. La-Mulana and Cave Story are freeware, although the remastered versions (Steam/3DS) are obviously on sale.

As an indie dev myself one of the biggest hurdles I saw was that regardless of what everyone tells one another here you still need the koolaid brigade. If your game doesn't get featured at least on Cucktaku or Polygone or Cucktoid you're going absolutely nowhere fast. I know from experience.

I tried reaching out just to the outlets that didn't take part in the "you're entitled!" shitstorms like ME3 and DmC, but didn't hear back from all of them and also they're still way too small to make a difference.

Word in the street is still a huge part of it. "just make game" isn't as cut and dry as we'd like to believe.

In the current year, if your game is good it'll sell, sooner or later due to word of the mouth.
I mean, look at STALKER and how many copies it sold by now, or Mount and Blade Warband.

You still need to be 'featured' to some capacity. People generally made the analogy with Cave Story or IWBTG (the latter of which I think is shit) but that's thinking every last person putting videos out there will just "go viral" overnight and find a huge audience.

Just make a decent game and it'll sell as long as you get greenlit for steam.

Well we're already on the way there. Johnathan Blow(n the fuck out) didn't even recoop his costs on The Witness. The retarded Sunset devs had to shut down their studio for shit sales. Depression Quests has less than 150,000 downloads despite being fucking free.
We're already winning on those grounds.

Yeah, to clarify: there is a number of kitchen-sized publishers that can help you go on Steam by splitting the earnings so you can skip the fee to put your game there and the Greenlight waiting period.

When you're at the last stretch of years of development you really just want to put it out there. But Greenlight does help with visibility, but when you're worn out from having to make the game and having little time to dedicate to making cozy with social media and stuff, you'll tend to want to pick the fastest way to end up there.

You ignore these progressive hipster clique games and focus on the games that actually matter. Games that take a risk or just provide pure fun entertainment. Forget about games made by anyone who thinks they're too cool to have fun and that instead video games should be art, where art is this stupidly pretentious trash that makes no sense and only serves to jerk the creator and his kind off. Games like Sunset, Gone Home, Dear Esther, Braid and focus more on games like Neon Chrome, Distance, Cave Story, Unepic, Brigador, Steamworld Heist, Guacamelee, games by Wayfoward or Klei.
And call out the bullshit some indie devs pull. For example look at Shovel Knight, where features they've promised a while back still haven't been completed(King Knight, Spectre Knight).


Finally you can actually try and make games for yourself or others. It's not exactly a walk in the park and you will stumble and suffer and think it's the worst thing you've ever done in your life but after a while it just clicks with you and you're making progress. That is unless you're like me and you get lazy every now and then and forget about your game for months before going back to them.

Gone Home is not a game, and you faggots will keep being butthurt about its mere existence as long as you see it as game.
