You have to remember what defeat means.

Defeat means the end of a secular Syrian state that protects the minority groups of Syria.
Defeat means a Sunni dictatorship takes power.
Defeat means the extermination of Syrias minority groups. Of which Assad and his family are part.

The Syrian people are fighting to survive in the face of Arab Sunni aggression.

Because there is literally nothing else he can do.
