It can be basically boiled down to a fined tuned brain reward system. Hard work for a little reward to keep you motivated. Once you start getting too much pleasure, living in hedonism, indulge in gluttony, etc. your natural rewards become unimportant. In this way people slowly start to lose the grip on the harsh nature of our world and become detached and easily manipulable towards degeneracy which gradually corrupts the individual.
