SPOILERS - Both stories involve a "jewel" which replaces the brain. In the first, it is placed in the brain where it leans what it needs to, then the brain is surgically removed. In the second story, millions of years have passed and the jewel process has changed so that the brain becomes the jewel over time and there is a continuity of consciousness and experience. In the first story, the main character realizes he is the jewel but that the transfer has failed and the brain is still in control of the body. The second story doesn't really focus on the jewel or its process but mainly explains them in passing.

They fear the nothingness and loss of their existence and consciousness since they think when they die, it all disappears, and as such, will do anything to stay alive to not lose that (or for the more depraved, no longer be able to indulge in short term, instant gratification pleasures).

So when you have no faith and/or belief in a higher state of existence or beings, who do you turn to? For these people, it's the ones that do all the "research" and work for them; Scientists (more specifically, the ones they see on TV and are allowed by (((them))) to have their articles and studies shown to the public without fear of being suicided for going against the narrative).
