Correct. Kek was around for Koreans in Starcraft and WoW, but really the origin of the kek meme started with 4chan /sp/. Around 2011 or so, someone used to spam /sp/ with trollface and "lol". From there, /sp/artans began mocking the spam by drawing crude versions of trollface and writing crude versions of "lol" Eventually "lel" came into existence and caught on. From there, lel was merged with with Holla Forums's "Top Gun" hat meme, creating top lel. Meanwhile, people began playing around variations of lel (jej, geg, kek), and also applied them to the Top Gun meme (top jej, top geg, top kek). At some point, someone realized there are Turkroach muffins named Top Kek and since then, kek became it's own meme, eventually being connected with the Egyptian deity (actually named Kuk) and Pepe, and becoming the meme it is today.
