Nihilism is better than being a stupid optimist.
Stress from work and subsistence wages
not wanting to be a faceless cog in the machine (although this feeling could persist in socialism who knows)
Having to take care of your own retirement and healthcare when you make enough to just get by
constantly being programmed to consume but not having the resources to freely consume
unemployment
precarious labor
so many things

The problem today is that people are completely integrated into the system and no opposition is possible anymore. It is doubtful that actual "social alienation" exists anymore since it has been turned into just one lifestyle among others within the system.
This. Think of it like playing a card game. We've been dealt very bad and very few cards (if any) because the system has taken all the cards for itself.
The optimist will look at the cards, say "there's so much wonderful possibilities" and play whatever first comes to his mind, some conventional strategy.
The pessimist will look at the cards and say "this is depressing, we're likely going to lose", then he's going to look for that one strategy that might work, discrediting one after another.
Who has better chances of winning? Or at least having a better experience of the world?
