Fundamentally it's not about what they "need" because groups and ideologies don't behave in rational ways, they're a product of the social dynamics between multiple people. There are always going to be people with extreme views or trying to go after "immoral media" or trying to abuse moral authority for their own profit, what matters is how the rest of society reacts to them. Nowadays christians complaining about sinful media aren't taken seriously in most places outside their own groups, but not that long ago the same institutions censoring or apologizing to SJWs would have been taking them seriously instead.

I think anytime where an ideology in a social group has a default perception of moral authority or is taboo to disagree with you have a death-spiral where things are going to get crazier and crazier. Instead of having even arguments one person is working to frame their arguments as an expression of "Christianity" or "Feminism" or whatever and the person with less ability to invoke the dominant moral ideology has a huge disadvantage. Not to mention the people who stay quiet, making things even more imbalanced.

The Moral Majority didn't represent normal people, modern SJW groups don't represent normal people, but they get this outsized influence where they can complain about shit and institutions listen.
