That depends on what you mean by "early". If you're talking about the first few centuries in Greece and Rome then it was largely non-violent (though intentionally disruptive, and Christians were quite fond of getting martyred so you can imagine the scale and nature of the disruptions) but if you're talking about later Christianization in the more northerly regions then it was a long and ugly process that was part violence, part deception and part political maneuvering.

There are a few examples that are arguably 'by the sword' but not at all on the level of ISIS, notably the conversion of Icelandic and Danish. I can think of a couple reasons (and if I'm wrong on any of this please correct me); For those wishing to go back or look more into the old religions, people tend to (or should) go with what their ancestry/bloodline is (and for most people on Holla Forums being German or fans of German/Nordic culture, it's not surprising to see Nordic paganism favored more here). However, as others have mentioned, with how Nordic culture is portrayed in the MSM and other sources, it gets people who don't even have a bit of Nordic blood or ancestral history to go with said culture, resulting in a bunch of LARPers, libtards, and cucks joining in just to spite Christianity (or more accurately, their parents and their way of life). For those with Pagan blood/ancestry, they could technically practice whichever one they like since they all stem from the indo-european religion, but ultimately, it's best to go with the one your family/ancestors followed.

Another reason is due to how some pagan religions got hit harder with their culture and teachings being subverted/destroyed by other religions and empires. One of the reasons Celtic culture is not as portrayed as much as Nordic culture for instance, is due to how a lot if not most of it's culture, religion, stories, and teachings were lost when the Romans went and killed the druids and bards (since they couldn't take on the Celts in a real fight head on) that kept and spread said information orally, passing it onto future druids/bards. This hurt the Celts over time since outside of rocks and metals, they had no written records of that information that inspired and guided them, resulting in a lot of their culture lost and what was written down was done by the Romans (and knowing how most cultures that write about outside cultures, they portrayed them as being more barbaric than they might've been). When Christianity came to the British isles and Ireland, what stories and teachings that remained (though more can/is being found) were recorded by them as well, albeit with Christianity's own "Flare" on the stories.

I myself, having Celtic ancestry and blood in me, am currently trying to learn more about Celtic culture/religion while siphoning out the bullshit Wiccans (leeching off of the culture and religion, giving people the wrong idea of what being a Celt is) and neo-pagans (with how they try to take out, ignore, or deny all the racist/misogynist parts of the culture when practicing it) put into it (which unfortunately all pagan religions have to endure as well). Though I am proud of it, I do my best not to brag about it, as I am still learning about it and have a lot more to learn about it.
