Just to add some more information on UK gun law for any anons that care.
You can also own any caliber long rifle in the UK. However anything above a .22 must be bolt action only. Also no pistols of any kind within England or Scotland. If memory serves me they are still legal in Ireland though.
To own any weapon you need a liscence which you must be sponsored by an 'influential member of the community' to aquire. Also you need a good reason for wanting to own one. The only two I know of are; either you're lucky enough to own a substantial amount of farm land and you need it for pests. Or you're a member of a gun club.

Your guns aren't really registered per se. But the FBI knows that you own a gun and what type it is, if it's a shotgun, rifle or pistol. Obviously you can't trust the government so they probably know exactly what kind of gun you have down to the serial number electronically, even though it's illegal for the ATF to have electronic records and all the records of your sale are kept in paper records. When there's a murder case and you're the suspect they legally know that you bought a pistol (if you bought from a store), but to match it it takes a few weeks for the ATF to go through their papers and confirm the serial number and to tie you to owning the actual murder weapon.

The FBI and ATF have broken these laws numerous times though so you should always try and buy from a private seller or do an 80% build. Unless it's your CCW gun then I think having it registered through the 4473 would probably save you and the guy you bought it from a headache.
