Insurgency sort of has a "dudebro" vibe going, but at least it sounds enthusiastic and somewhat authentic. Not to mention the lines are very simple, non intrusive, and devoid of any politically charged language. The middle eastern rebel forces have a sort of forced and cliche sandnigger accent, and although it's very noticeable, I'd take that shit over Gearbox "look at how witty and progressive I am" shit any day.

DotA 2 suffers slightly on the VA front because Valve uses their actors to voice various heroes. Some can do it well and have distinguishable voice e.g. the ara ara dragon being voiced by the same actor as legion commander, but some can't and need to rely on layers of editing and effects. Compare spectre and mirana's voice, for example.

I play Battleborn almost daily and I love it but the cinematic is fucking garbage. It's so fucking horrible that I almost turned the game down on the very opening cinematic with a shitty Gorilaz song. It was that horrible.

I really enjoy Battleborn PvP and PvE gameplay, but please, this is too much.

A intro cinematic should not be praised as part of the game, considering that most of them are bloody outsourced anyway.

The game/gameplay (and how good it is) should be what judges the quality of the game. Not the single fucking intro cutscene.

As for "high art" is vidya I would consider those to be games with interesting design and mechanics. Mario 64 is the best example I can think of for what I would call "high art" in vidya.

The biggest thing to note is that this only makes mention of the creator's intent for their creation, not on the actual quality of it - being art is not an indicator of quality. Shit like Gone Home may very well be art if they were created for that purpose, but they're shit art with how poorly they use the medium.

By that definition realistic landscapes aren't art because they aren't trying to convey anything other than what the artist was looking at.

Of course, being good at your craft makes you a lot better at making art since you have a better understanding of your medium and can thus manipulate it to portray what you wish in a much better fashion.
