Silent Hill

Let's have a silent hill thread to answer the real questions.
Why is Eddie barfing?
What happens after the rebirth ending?
Why did anyone think it was a good idea to have downpour and homecoming developed by the U.S.
Are the Room and Origins good games?

The Room is pretty ok, it's just different from SH 1-3, so don't expect that.
If 1-3 have "creepy" atmosphere, SH4 is more like "weird".

I personally liked the room, but I thought it should have had some more enemy variety and have a better developed other world.

WHO WAS DOG??

played sh2

got to this one room shortly after you first encounter pyramid head i think where theres loads of whispering and i played for a bit after that then stopped because id have to go back through that room and didnt want to

Then you are a massive faggot.

I think rebirth is canon. My impression was the protag re-forms the cult to bring his dead wife back. Hence why future games happen.

it was spoopy

I thought the in-water ending was canon?

He just killed a man and was feeling shocked.
By "man" i mean the "things" he sees in his alternate reality, wich is just normal men staring at him because that's what bothered him the most, being semi autistic.
James uses a ritual to resurrect Mary, don't worry about it, it's not canon.
Money, gotta make dat cash reach the Resident Evil braindead dumbass audience.
The Room is the single most patrician SH of them all, Origins is sub-mediocre and essentially wholly non canon.

Why do people have an issue seeing Shattered Memories as a legit addition to the canon story? Ignoring the dipshit talk of a 'reimaging', it makes sense that Heather would put herself in her dad's shoes so she could understand a man who she didn't really know at all. She needed closure, she got it, how is it contrary to anything?

I imagine he didn't have the stomach for whatever monstrosity he saw previous to meeting James. Maybe he had just offed somebody. When James runs into Eddie for the last time, it seemed to imply that he had been killing a bunch of people inbetween dicking around with James and the loli.
James goes on to have a relationship with a fake person, which surely wouldn't end up with something fucked up happening.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Origins, fuck no, but you might as well to get it out of the way. The Room, sure, if you don't mind doing the same levels twice.

than phone wrang and you were doge

The canon SH2 ending is In Water.
Play SH4 to find out why.
If you don't get it, play it again until you figure it out, i'm not here to babysit you, PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT.

Too much pizza.

If Yamaoka's to be believed, Konami had been wanting to hand the IP off to westerners for a while. Real question is why they gave Climax another shot after Origins.

The Room yes, Origins no.

According to the novelization and interviews with the team, In Water is the most canon ending. Not that "canon" endings are a huge concern with a narrator as unreliable as James.

I see your pic and raise you another.

Seriously? It couldn't retcon the canon harder if it tried.

Oh yeah? Mine's a wallpaper, tough guy

Because he's a fat disgusting piece of shit.

Yeah, he killed a guy and his dog before stumbling into SH.
He's also been killing people in SH itself but they're not people.
Angela sees Abstract Daddies, James sees Lying figures and all the rest of his shit, and Eddie basically sees other people, more or less.

If two people interact in the Nightmare shit starts to bleed over, thus why James could see the place burning like Angela could, and started seeing Abstract Daddies even on his own.
Probably the sexual nature of the monsters made it easier for him to internalize them, having tons of sexual related problems himself so he could instantly relate on a subconcious level.

How? Everything was in her head. She was trying to form a picture with pieces she didn't really have. I don't see the problem. She wasn't there, a piece of her was, and that piece wasn't around for the entirety of the shit Harry went through.

W-whatever, bro.

I think this helps to explain why Pyramid Head becomes a thing in multiple games. I know it's all about cash grabs, but in-universe it makes can also make sense that it's become its own manifestation trekking about the holy grounds.

I love the Silent Hill Mythos but too spooped to play the games, im a faggot etc. etc.

Any particularly cool things you guys can share about the setting/monsters? Silent hill trivia gives me a hard on

If it was handled with MUCH more grace.
As it is, no, PH was simply in the other games because it was a gigantic cash grab.

If, let's say, James dad went to SH, then in that case it would've sort of made sense for him to actually see something resembling PH, that is the ONLY instance where i see him being brought back in a way that makes sense and doesn't disrupt the original meaning of the creature.

Eddie only killed a dog.

Because the Harry from Silent Hill and the Harry from Shattered Memories are two completely different people, in the same way that the Silent Hill from SH1 and the Silent Hill from SM are two completely different towns. There is no need to try to fit them into the same universe just because they share the same title, there is no canon outside of SH1-4.

They don't just "see" them, though, they're real physical manifestations just like in the first game. Eddie even comments on the fact that he was running from "weird looking monsters" when he hid in the bathroom. The only exception here is Laura. is right also in that some monster designs are shared between games. There are some enemies in SH2 that can be seen through the iron grating that you don't actually fight until SH3.

I tried Room for the first time on emulator a few months back, the combat seemed even more sluggish than usual and the enemies seemed like there's more of them and they're more resilient. I didn't like it at all, and since I've read plot analysis of it years ago I know what happens so I won't bother.

He shot somebody in the leg, they never specify if he was killed or not.

Im pretty sure i remember reading something about it ending the guy's football future or something.

Yes, they are real and can most definitely kill you.
But it's not clear how other people see them.

For example, just like you said, Eddie says that he sees "weird looking monsters", but it's not clear if he sees what James does.

We only have confirmation that two people can see exactly the same thing when they're together in the Nightmare.
When James and Angela meet in the Nightmare James can finally see everything she does, her monsters, the womb-room, and later on the place itself being on fire.

...

Well Eddie says "then He came after me. I shot him too! He's going to have a hard time playing football on that knee!"

At first I thought maybe Eddie was hallucinating and seeing Pyramid Head as one of his old bullies, since the game emphatically capitalizes "He", but apparently there's a lot lost in translation between the nip and USA versions, don't want to read too much into it.

Exactly.

I want to bully the monsters in Silent Hill

The what? I don't remember this.

Also, a lot of people put emphasis on the fact that monsters and such what people see are very important to the story itself, but then I'd like to ask how would you try and explain the puzzle elements into the "world" and story?

Say, when the quiz show in the elevator happens, Mary is there with James, but doed she hear it as well? Is the safe "real" real or only James' imagination to impede himself from just getting the ammo as a punishment etc?

The room with Angela and the abstract daddy

The one after that big featureless labyrinth.

Maria comments on it, so probably.

Oh, right, right. For some reason I remembered wrongly that the room was plastered with newspapers, but it was just on the outside that there was a newspaper with blacked out parts. Yeah, it was the one with the freaky cylinders on the wall.

"What was that" yeah she did I just listened to it. I guess I have to replay since I seem to be mixing things up…

If developers knew what they were doing, they'd know we need one final game where Heather goes back to stop the cult once and for all.

I know it's a cash grab, and I know it's a stretch, but if James can see Eddie and Angela's shit then I still think that opens the door to Pyramid Head bleeding out elsewhere. Just because Eddie and Angela don't mention it doesn't mean it didn't pop up maybe once or twice. A stretch, yeah, but I think it's still as valid as anything within the confines of the lore.

I know they are, that's what I'm saying. The Harry in Shattered Memories is Heather's manifestation of her trying to understand her father. She only knew the person he presented herself as, she didn't know all the other shit that went into making Harry who he was or what made his ordeals what they were.

Maybe the town has some conscious humor. Maria was a manifestation between James and the town, I'm sure she hears everything he does. The safe's probably as real as the ammo itself or the monsters or whatever else gets presented to any given person.

Oh, i'm popping a cherry here seems like.
This is a womb.
Do you see it now?
The abstract daddy is "invading" the "room" and there's holes with pendulums swinging back and forth endlessly.

Nah that's just pure gameplay.
Aside a couple of things that actually do fit, such as when there's anything related to rituals of The Order, or that whole thing with the stalker in SH3 that becomes part of the puzzle and eventually you find him in the alternate hospital morgue whispering to Heather as one of the corpses, that was pretty neat.

Yeah?
Mary is literally born out of his mind in the first place, she USED to be a real person (probably?) but was then reshaped by the town to be used by James in his "journey".

It doesn't take 3-4 hours to beat, why not?

There's no need for her to make an effort to understand her father, because in SH3 their relationship was fine, Harry was the perfect father figure. I am not buying that the father of the year was rewritten as a neurotic sexually-frustrated amnesiac for any reason but that SH2 has more fans than SH1 does.

Dude

Whoops, sorry, i meant Maria, not Mary.
15 years later and i still mix up the fucking names.

Maria is Mary reborn as a monster you silly goose.

I just beat 3 for the first time today. Really liked it. Still like 2 the most.

It makes me mad how hard they fucked Downpour up. It could have been so much better.

As much as I like the cult stuff, I like how personal 2 is. It feels more, grounded?

There is no Moon speak one. The English version was made first, so anything lost in translation would be reversed. the voice actors are also the mocap people.

Born from a wish heavily implies that Maria was never really anyone, not to mention that she looks just like Mary, it can't be a coincidence, she is basically like Lisa from SH1, basically another monster.

I swear to god Hotwheels, if this is posted twice, I'm going to eat my underwear.

Not exactly.
I mean yes, she's essentially Mary, but i'm talking about the possibility that she might have been a real, unrelated person before turning into Maria and thus used by James for his little shitshow.

Considering the events of Born From A Wish fans have been speculating that she might have been some random dancer actually working at Heaven's Night before being "turned".

And that relationship was between a single father and his only daughter, it was an unassuming relationship whose only bump was the random cult member. When she learned over all the other shit that went down, concerning her birth and all that, there entered elements she wasn't informed on.

Its "BORN from a wish" Not "Remade from a wish" or "Dressed like a whore from a wish"

yeah ive read as much details as I can on the games plots and characters, but it never gets old.
Although I do like the cult thing, I can see why they settle on the "Personal hell" excuse theyve gone, I think its only really suffering because of bad developers.

That sounds like the title of a great SH doujin.

Maria is not a monster, James is the monster

Sick burn

Silent Hill 2 had some culture behind it with strong influence from Dostoyevsky and Lyne, in the same way that Silent Hill 1 had a lot of literary influences. Every post-SH4 attempt has been a low-effort rehash of the same story, because there's only so much you can do with the "personal hell" framework. The cult is a much better explanation for the supernatural angle and doesn't encourage fan theories becoming canon.

I still haven't played 3 after all this time, now I feel like it would almost be a waste since I know everything about it. I just put up my PS2 to play some GT4, I guess I should look around for a copy.

Hey, speaking of SH doujins…

exhentai.org/g/798065/c91e023f03/

Three was honestly one of the weakest in the series to me.

Also stuff from Blue Velvet.

Yeah, I get that, but you cant roll with that dingy cult always being behind it all too.

I knew about a lot before I played it, but it was still a good game. If you like Silent hill you should just play it anyway. I found a hardcopy of both 2 and 3 and picked them up. Even play on a SDTV since the ps2 looks like crap on a new tv.
What I do like about the first 3 games is most people do like all 3 with one of them being the one they like more.
I can get why a person might not like 3 as much, but I enjoyed it a lot
2>3>1
i never played nor do I want to play The Room. My friend told me halfway into the game it turns into a huge escort mission.
I think I'll just play 2 again.

Surely you mean of the real series, the original four, not the whole nine.

And Cronenberg's various takes on body horror. And Christina Aguilera, for some reason.

Maybe they didn't know much about US fashion so they looked at what celebs dressed like?

What do you mean 9 in the series? There were only ever 4.

i love silent hill. back in the day i didnt know what i was gettin into when i first played the first silent hill. Holy shit it was amazing. From the complex puzzles that took me months to figure out, to the tense and scary setting. It is truly a work of art when it comes to psychological horror. It blends so many styles from so many literature pieces as well as movies that there is nothing quite like the first 3 games.

The Room had an amazing back story that could very well be its own movie without even tyin it to silent hill. The sound design as well as the monster design in these games are surreal, Team Silent knew their shit.

Yamaoka famous "silence is also a sound" mentality.

By the way, if you were into SH ambient, there's this guy called Dustfungo that used to make something called "SH complete soundtracks" with spliced ambient music not present in the OSTs.
This was a very, very long time ago, now Fungo has become an immensely disgusting dickhead.
But maybe you can still find those soundtracks floating around, in fact he probably has em somewhere on his site, maybe.

Silent Hill's design was based around Kindergarten Cop, it's clear their "research" of US life was kinda poor.

*The school was, at least.

Every time in these threads.

actually, Eddie shot a dude in the leg and killed his dog.

Didn't kill a guy, but thought he did, which is why his monsters were people looking who constantly laughed and jeered at him. Ended his football career though.

Does anyone find the real world/fog world more creepy than the nightmare one? Going around really quite real life areas in the dark felt more scary to me. Maybe it's because it mimics real life more? The subway in 3 was really creepy for me since being alone in subways IRL always makes me nerves.

We all agreed that Hometown is the best ending song of the series right?

would love to see a Silent Hill where someone is doing research on the world and all its creatures.

that or PT/ The Room sequel, not story wise but something like it in terms of gameplay

it sounds like one of the SH monsters trying really, really hard to sing like a human.

I mean the dude's voice is fucking awesome, but it's seriously baritone.

In the nightmare one, it's pretty well confirmed that you're gonna get fucked. When it's just foggy, you have the possibility of either being fucked or being a-ok.

If you walk around alone in a subway in the middle of the night IRL there's also a good possibility you're gonna get fucked, thus why it's the scariest idea.

Remember when we thought The Room was mediocre? We had no idea. No idea.

don't bother with anything beyond 1-4

But is it worse in a not-just-yet nightmare subway or in a oh-shit-the-siren nightmare subway?

No, i always considered it amazing.
You just had to be a hikki to understand what it was going for.
If you had periods where you literally didn't leave your room for a year, you'd get what they were aiming for.

Gameplay wise it wasn't great tho, i'll give you that.

Who knows what PT could have turned into. Assuming they kept it first person, it would have been a interesting way to play a SH game. I'd like it more if it was fixed cam though. Games just don't do that anymore. Even if they went with 3rd person shooter, will never know what story they would tell. Maybe one day Kojima will share what his ideas were.

I understand that. The idea you might be okay and it's all in your head is a very real thing. Having no idea what might be around the corner.. And if you turn the radio off for extra spooky levels it's more spooky.

such is life in NY. It's also why it's just a good part of Jacob's Latter.
Even today the subways can be scary. And with stabbings going up it makes it worst.

mfw there are people who's first SH game is downpour and homecoming

You know the worst part?
The heat, the humidity, and the faint smell of urine mixed with cleaning chemicals.
Being alone at night in the summer in a subway is this almost otherworldy experience, it feels like you're inside something alive, made of flesh, there's the same amount of humidity and heat around you that i assume you would experience when getting eaten.
I wonder if they were thinking about this sensation when they picked that location for SH3.

If they're any kind of sensible we will see PT extended and made into a VR game if that technology picks up.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason it was pulled from the store was in fact to potentially reuse it in some way one day without the Reedus parts.

I always thought the followup video for this captured disappointment better.

Was there ever much to Silent Hills besides PT?

You know you're fucked when a select series 1-4, that is of SH, of course of video games is better than most horror movies.

I want another Jacob's Ladder for some reason

Speaking of Silent Hill and movies, how about that Silent Hill Revelations? 2012 was thirty years ago and I'm still furious about it.

Who knows, did they even visit the states for the 3rd game? Subways in Japan can't be that dirty when you compare them to here. And even here it varies from where you live. NYC just has really dirty subways.

PT is dead forever.

Jokes aside, that movie is awful. Almost as shit as all the RE movies.

No idea, however they did visit the states for SH2.
No way, they're super clean.
However they're full of hobos.

That movie is absolute dog shit. It really is.

Don't watch it, its for your own good.

Now that ramadan is around the corner i'm interested in playing some SH midnight. Which versions are the best? Is there a pastebin or an image?

Just play them on the PS2 if you can. On a older TV if you can.
If not 2 and 3 are on the PC. I think people made "HD" mods too. Don't touch the HD remakes with a 10 foot poll.

Let it rest peacefully user. It's hard to say it without sounding like a pretentious dick, but most films today don't feel like they have any love of craft behind them. If they were to make another Jacob's Ladder or a reboot, it would be horrible and probably ruin the original, because most people would think of the newest one instead.

Just avoid the HD Collection on PS3/360, and you're gold.

Here

No i'm not asking for a sequel or anything like that. I just want something similar or that's different from it but has the same sort of directing and/or style.

I still remember oh so vividly how I went there at opening day on Halloween. I fully expected things to be worse than the first movie, but holy shit did it ever exceed my expectations of bullshit. The only things they got right was Heather's appearance and that one scene at the school where Heather runs into the acid spit thing. The spider monster wasn't too bad. I liked the ending theme song. Everything else was bile.

I've heard this song called the worst thing ever and I don't know why. It's a good song.

Who's Twin Perfect? Are they loud and annoying or clam about things like that matthewmitosis guy?

They can be a bit full of themselves, but they have their shit together.

I kinda liked Shattered Memories

Yes

But they have done a lot of very well-researched videos on Silent Hill

Though maybe TOO well researched.

Because apparently what they say is FACT, and if you prove them wrong, they take it as an offense.

From what I can tell it's true, they're extremely autistic. And their videos also now have a perplexing number of dislikes, more than I remember, but I don't care enough to find out why.

Now that I think about it, weren't these also the guys that got Guy Cihi to do a SH2 livestream with them and ended up talking over him the entire time?

Probably, I mean, they act like they are the only ones who have analyzed every bit of Silent Hill.

It was the Fungo guy. Probably because he's buddy-buddy with Guy.

I love The Room. For me its SH2>The Room>SH3>SH1>Homecoming>Shattered Memories>Downpour

He saved the day and killed that faceblade thing that was never in the games

It seems like people edited the silent hill wiki to include how certain things represent toxic masculinity.

A bizarre number of feminists like SH2 for its realistic depiction of a victim of sexual abuse. But they don't particularly seem to care about the next game in the series and its deeply relatable and believable young female playable character. Go figure, a small casualty in the name of finely-made horror.

Really, where?

Either he saw some wacky shit or just killed something or someone and that shocked him to point of vomiting.

James is going to reintroduce the new Mary to his dakimura waifu.

Money. They really want to cash in the jump-scare and saw movie audience. Also fuck Tom Hulett.

The Room was average, despite some of Team Silent was already disbanding at that time. Origins is cruising between below average to decent, but it doesn't meet up to what the original 3 were, and thankfully it's non-canon.

The abstract daddy page.

I hate the man more than Todd Howard. And I really don't like Todd.

Why does everything I love get treated like this?

I was reading the whole thing looking for what you meant, then I saw it. Please tell me there's not more.
If the edit is still there can I assume higher ups at the wiki are SJW/ Feminist types?

Afraid so user.

>Is this an abstract representation of Angela being raped by her daddy?
Gee I wonder

Well that's a god damn shame.

If you wanted this image all you had to do was ask

Don't really know much about him aside from him being involved with the Fallout games. What did he do exactly?

Not even mad anymore, just have this searing hatred and loathing against him and his idiocy.

It hurts my soul saying that stuff out loud.

No. I am pretty sure they are not unless something changed. It might have been part of the counter drama that happened after the whole foreskin thing that happened with that one admin. A lot of people edited for feminism. There is also some deep analysis about downpour monsters being representative of rape culture.

I hated that piece of shit so it was nice when the game flopped and everyone made fun of him. Can't remember if he sperged out even more. He did have a few meltdowns when people pointed out how he was hypocritical and a retard when he did not understand the point of many of the monsters. What ever happened to him? Didn't he get fired from wayforward?

He killed Fallout and lied

The shit stain still works as a game director for Wayforward, and his twitter confirms he's still a cuck.

Really? What does he say? Is he still asshurt his game flopped and every silent hill fan called him out on his faggotry? At least the teams are kind of separate and the shantae team except for the new game's artist are ok. One of the music directors also might be a beta from san fran.

Pic related, and the whole gamers send death threats crap. You can see his twitter thing if you like, twitter.com/hypnocrite

Why does wayforward let him stay there when he is so retarded that every game he directed flopped and pissed off so many fans that a few stopped buying from wayforward all together. He is such a slimy piece of shit it is unbelievable.

Nigga I can't click that shit, I'm off to Altavista.

Hook-ups and calling out the mating call for other cucks to land him a job.

What I mean is why he is still working at wayforward when a good amount of them outside of kinucakes and a partially beta music director hate faggots like him?

Dude it says it right at the bottom of that description. "FOV Tool:" and then the link

That's a pretty good Robbie, OP. This one's creepier, however.

And yes, The Room is the second best Silent Hill. Fuck off SH1 fags.

You and I agree totally on the originals, and disagree entirely on the Western titles.

Downpour>Shattered Memories>Homecoming, personally.

Silent Hill 3 really dropped the ball by having the SH2 version of Silent Hill rather than remaking the SH1 version.

How do you mean?

My bad on that one user, and dubs. But possibly the reason why he's still working in Wayforward is because his job position is secure, and the minority of faggots that like him could maybe a higher up that wants to keep him.

I just want to point out there's at least one model of a dead..thing that highly resembles a regular human being right before you meet Eddie. I mean, you can see roughly only the feet and the legs but they look far more human than any monster.

Man, what a sad character. Although, I do believe Lisa was actually real, but Alessa shielded her from the Nightmare's corruption because she cared about Lisa. But once Lisa started figuring out what was going on, the facade faded and she became part of the corruption.

There's also a dead body in the fridge the first time you meet Eddie, and if I recall correctly there's one at the table when you meet him in the prison. There's also another corpse wearing James' clothes lying in the street early in the game.

Hometown is babby tier, only casuals think it's the best because it was in the movie and everyone on YouTube started using it when talking about Silent Hill.

If you're going to post "best ending" song, at least post the best "best ending" song

Yup, that's the one I was talking about. You can't really see anything but the lower half of the body, but it clearly resembles a human.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were talking about the one in the meat locker

Twin Perfect is pretty cancerous, and likes to shit all over Silent Hill 4 because it's not exactly like 1-3, and even refuses to acknowledge there was anything remotely good that came out of the Western titles (Shattered Memories had a good ending, at least Downpour tried to be original).

I politely disagree user, all the ending songs for the first 4 games were all good, but I think this one is the best.

Ugh. I can't stand Romero's vocals, he sounds so fucking out of place in Silent Hill.

I think "Dropped the ball" is a bit harsh but it was wasted potential. The SH version used in 2 and 3 are just because its easier to reuse assets when really SH2's version holds no real significance to Heather since her story is closely linked with SH1. It would make more sense for her to explore the part of SH that her father had to go through rather than going through Jame's section. Would be nice to see a remodel of the Elementary school and the Hospital.

I do, however, think Silent Hill 3 had a great intro theme.

A fair point. I liked the area again, but that would have been cool too.

exhentai.org/g/798065/c91e023f03/

after you've given up on the real world and start to enjoy that place, he'd be a pretty cool dude to chill with

Sorry guys, but the real question is which one has the best cover

Can't disagree with that, such a shame the singer is a major cunt. Though I slightly prefer SH1's intro song over You're Not Here because of the mandolin riffs.

SH2 had the best cover.

Good lord bringing me back to all of the Kingdom Hearts fan videos using the opening of that song

I want to fuck Heather.

Any PT fans wishing they had never been born, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this game
store.steampowered.com/app/391720/

It's a lot more fast paced but its great.

...

Ah, how could I forget the cutie on SH1's soundtrack cover

Anyone that was okay with what happened in the HD collection has been knocked down for me. Even Troy Baker, and I like him in Persona 4.

:^)

But yeah the spat with Cihi was uncalled for and really shitty.

Especially considering that Guy Cihi is the nicest guy ever

I really wish Guy would do an entire LP of Silent Hill 2 by himself, while he gives his insight and comments on James, the story, helping make the game, etc.

for you

Silent Hill 2 > Silent Hill > Silent Hill 3 > Silent Hill 4 > Downpour > Origins > Homecoming > Shattered Memories > GBA VN > Arcade

He went into some detail about it on the Best Friends podcast. He seems like a pretty humble guy. I imagine when it was your only "5 min of fame" the fame part never gets to your head. He got to be a part of something really special and he's not an asshole about it.

I will forever hold that against Fungo. That livestream where he got Guy and Eddie's VA was so close to being great if Fungo would just curb the autism for a couple hours.

I know there's a webm of this floating out there.

Layers of Fear is fucking terrible. Everything about the story is retarded, cliche, and predictable. It's not scary, every time I'd see the ghostwife I'd just walk at her, passout/die, then immediately respawn.

The only thing I liked about it was, graphically it looked pretty good, and the setpiece where you looked up and realized the room stretched out infinitely up. Every other non-euclidean gag it pulled, Antichamber already did better.

Such a shame, but then again, it's annoying to hear his same gruff style voice over and over again these days.

The girl can sing, but she always sounds the same when it comes to dubbing, and the first VA for Major sounded better.

Don't forget her dissing Donna Burke for doing Angela Orosco. Why can't the majority of VAs keep their mouth shut and just do there work?

Saving that one.

God fucking dammit Fungo.

Beautiful

He did a terrible job with Ocelot, it fucking sounded generic and a lot like Miller. Why the fuck they didn't hire Josh Keaton is beyond me.

It's odd since I was under the impression most VA's are nicer and more humble people. They must be aware they're only famous in the eyes of nerds and weebs. I'm sure a a lot are still like that. And maybe Even Baker is not a bad guy, but he was very rude and nasty with the things he said about Guy.

I will always defend Burke's acting. Angela is supposed to sound like she's not right in the head. I think it's been said people who are really abused as a child like that end up sounding very childish and a little messed up when they get older?
I'm basing that off nothing.

My bad on that one, I thought he voiced Ocelot in Snake Eater but that was Josh Keaton. Didn't know about the VA switch until I searched it up.

This.

Not just that, but the abuse has driven her borderline autistic. She has no clue how to relate to other people or hold a conversation, flies off the handle at the smallest thing. Her every movement and everything about her appearance, down to the plain hairstyle and shapeless neutral-toned sweater, show a maladjusted victim of childhood abuse. Or you could dismiss it as poor line delivery if you are retarded.

I can at least confirm that the first hour is awful, that's as much as I could stomach.

It's why they cast 'real people' to play the roles. they don't sound like fucking actors. James sounds likes real guy. Like a guy that's not very social.

Mary's letter at the end of the game has almost made me cry anytime I get to it. And her hallway speech hits in the feels really hard.

Doesn't she appears in SH3 now in the form of a nurse?

That's why SH2 felt so special, the characters weren't cool guys or nothing like that, they were normal people like you and me.

I thing James handles shit better than I would. I get scared easy. I also fear death.
I don't think too hard about it, but I do wonder what fucked things my brain would make. I imagine mostly repressed sexual feelings and whatever utter despair can make.
Heather feels like a normal teen. She hols it together when it comes time to, but once its all over she still breaks down and cries that her father is dead, left alone.

I've read that twice and am still disappointed that she turned out to have a normal mouth instead of a weird face sucker.

Lisa has a small cameo in the form of a brief 10 second or so clip from Silent Hill 1.

And, well, there is another very small cameo right after in the transition to the other world but unless you're autistic like me and comb over the scene you're probably not gonna get it right away.

Oh yeah, I was there. Even saved the board thread about the stream. I fucking hated how full of himself Fungo was. I mean, if the chat people ask for a 'favorite area of the game' it's obviously a question for Cihi and Schaufele - the guests of the stream.

It was cringeworthy at points, but the final boss time had me boiling.

For me, it wasn't 'almost'.
The hallway speech was pretty damn heavy, but I held up.
When the full sized letter got to the middle point, though… Oh man, waterfall time. Mary's VA told in an interview that reading that part was pretty tough. I can imagine, her intonation in that part is fucking perfect.

You can hear in her voice she's holding on as much as she can. You could picture her crying as she wrote the letter. I wish something like that could make me cry. I haven't cried in 12 years.

What happened with the singer? Why did she freak out at Cihi and Donna?

What did Evan Baker say about Guy?

The whole video explains it.

IIRC, the singer was the voice action director in the HD remaster of SH3 and SH2, and she had problems with Cihi and Donna because some deal about not being well paid for their performances in the original versions.

Why would they need to change the voices? I never played the HD collection since nothing positive was said about it, so I don't understand the whole context. At least they did not change the entire story like they apparently wanted to.

Alternatively, if you don't want to watch the whole seventy minute video, "cunt" is a pretty concise summary. She openly mocks the actress for Angela and says Guy's opinion on his rights doesn't matter since he isn't even a real actor.

Seriously? That is pretty low.
Some VAs really have a stick up their ass, it seems.

She still sings pretty damn nicely, however.

Money, and they probably to attract the younger crowd that likes these VA voices. Also Tom Hulett.

Not gonna deny that, but such a shame that her and Troy are a pair of cunts. Donna Burke has some good chops too.

What did Troy do?

he baked

Look in

But in a nutshell, he pins the blame on Cihi for the voice drama and just added unwanted fuel to the fire. Thing is Cihi was in the right, because that there was no written contract between the original VAs of SH2 and Konami. He as an artist still owns the mo-cap performance and voice.

Not to mention, it's very hypocritical of them to berate Cihi for asking residuals, since weren't Troy and Mcglynn in support with that voice acting strike a few months back?

VA industry is really a mess. It doesn't matter if he wasn't one of the ultra-union-super-high-level-VAs like Baker and co. - if Cihi did such work (and pretty good work, at that) he's entitled to get paid for it. And not just as a VA indeed, but as a mocap actor as well.

It seems I am sadly late to the analytical conversation of the games. Those are always interesting.

Anyway, I have decided to take the plunge and play Homecoming before I start SH3. I want to try Homecoming out of curiosity, but why eat sprouts after enjoying a nice bowl of ice cream, you know?

Do you like pain, user?

I don't want to completely ruin the series for myself by playing it after. I want to end it on a high.

I also don't feel like I can really shit on the game all that much until I actually play it. I guess Pyramid Head isn't explained at all?

Reminder that in Homecoming an escaped mental patient is capable of taking down an entire group of trained cultists in a firefight because he fought in the war (In his head).

One recent trend I'm really happy with is that Japanese games these days are dual audio. Some even drop English altogether.

Been asking for this for years and it is finally happening.

but the English in SH was always top notch, at least from 1-3. It hurts RE and other nipshit much more, but it really adds to the flavor of SH.

Not to mention its some of the best english VA work ive heard in a game since, and it still holds up today.

why not just play the first 4 silent hill games and then stop? The later ones don't continue the story any way so there's no point in playing them at all.

Such a shame.

shattered memories any good?

It's okay.

It's okay if you like Wii controls and running away from every monster you see since you can't fight back.

jesus

Oh fuck I didn't know Burke did the vocals for the PSO credit theme.

Best spooky track of the franchise?

So I just found Silent Hill 2 at a local games store for 15 bucks.
Is there anything I should know prior heading in? Cause I know jack shit and all I know is everyone likes the soundtrack and the story.

If you haven't played the first game, you should either a) play it first or b) at least understand the backstory well enough to know why the town is the way it is in SH2

I like how killing time sounds so erratic and tuneless sometimes, that added with the spaghetti western film feel make it my favorite track of the first game and really spooky too.

IMO its either Dark Again or this one. Dark Again is great when you're walking a forest path alone at night, while Enshrouding Darkness was the most unsettling shit in-game. Scary hospital finally over, you're about to have a breath of relief when youre back in the "normal world", but the fog world is still disturbing and oppressive thanks to this weird backround noise. You get the feeling that things are escalating in the backround.

I don't think this is the spookiest track, I just want to post more Silent Hill 1 music I liked

I personally find this to be the best horror track, it merges with the atmosphere very well

Mah, nigga. Also, my theory about what happened with SH4:

Imagine a far better SH4. It really just needed more variety. They still did an stellar job.

Really? You could play 2 with knowing nothing about 1. The cult isn't even in 2.

Yes, it is.

But why wouldn't you play 1? It's a classic.

Angela was always intended to move and sound older than she actually was for exacty that: she's messed up. An older woman who sounds childish at times. Include the awkward pauses in her speech and saying 'mama' when referring to her mother and you have someone who sounds like they're pre-pubescent. Yet, that dynamic of someone with obviously more maturity in their voice and looking and moving like they're even older is what really drove that 'off' factor.

It really grinded my gears to hear Mary-E Glynn voice her shite opinion about how Burke performed Angela's VA when the fucking original creators had very meticulously chosen her because of the way she did it. Another thing about Angela is her performance is really overshadowed. She really doesn't get much screen time, so that was bound to happen.

youtube.com/watch?v=UKBMqRRvn_g

I personally found it mind numbingly tedious going through door after door running away from everything. Outlast did a much better job with that, in fact you may as well play that instead. It's essentially the same game.

When?

He said he was going to play 2.

Embed nigga

The nightmarish manifestations would never happen if the cult hadn't corrupted the supernatural power around the town in the way that they did, Silent Hill 2 doesn't happen without Silent Hill 1. The cult and more detail about its backstory is also referenced constantly by items and environmental details. Ignoring SH2's connection to the trilogy canon is what leads so many people to misinterpret what's going on.

Yeah, but the cult has little to nothing to do with 2. Sure it's the cult that made the town fucked up, but nobody in 2 names the Order or knows anything about them.

Then they have everything to do with 2

And, again, it's not just that they fucked up the town and then SH2 does its own thing, the cult is referenced constantly by the different items and locations and riddles you encounter.

Unless you got the rebirth ending, that reminds me the ending song for that final is very weird in comparation with the whole soundtrack. It's still pretty great tho.

Bump because this is a pretty good thread.

Favorite levels, rooms, etc?
Woodside Apartments will always have a special place in my heart for giving me that initial wtf. The game really took off after getting out of the foggy, barren streets and into that creepy and claustrophobic hellhole.

Also the hell sections in SH3. Behind those smokey walls there's some really, really creepy shit going down. They require wall hacks to get to. That only makes it seem creepier.

I remember reading the description of this one many years ago "Valtiel performing wild oral sex on a nurse hanging upside down from the ceiling"
No video was available at the time as far as my search abilities proved so now that i can finally watch and confirm it was real i can die in peace

Levels look really off when they're not so dark. I really liked the long underwater stairs with the fog horn. It just felt creepy.
And like I said before the subways in 3 only for brining out my real life fears of bad shit happening to me in the subways.

They removed the foghorn in the HD and you just walk in silence.

There's a corridor in Silent Hill 4 on the second apartments visit I think, it's just after Henry's room and it just plays this really weird ambient music, it's kind of soothing but at the same time it puts me so on edge every fucking time. I love that corridor it's so weird

The Room is the only one I haven't played. Am I better off that way? I really dislike escort missions. so The last half of the game might make me stop.

that pic reminds me of that little girl who accidentally killed her instructor at a firing range when her uzi's recoil fucked her up

The elevator in Alchemilia where the fourth floor suddenly appears.

Either the room with the Mary mannequin or the one with James', Eddie's and Angela's tombstones.

The one in Brookhaven with the mirror.

The Eileen room.

Whether or not it's even "really" a Silent Hill game is still up for debate, it was developed during the same time period as SH3 by non-core members of Team Silent and there are conflicting statements about whether or not it was originally intended to take place in that universe.

You will probably really dislike the second half of the game, but you may as well try the first half.

I don't know about you, but personally I'm glad that Silent Hills got canned. Looking at Del Taco's repertoire of movies, his horror isn't very subtle. The man cannot write or direct worth shit. It's all jump-scares, jumping the gun by showing the monsters way too early and just horrible pacing. I shat my pants the first time I played the demo, sure, but I didn't shit my pants for the right reasons.

The original SH games had VERY little jump-scares. It relied almost entirely on atmosphere and on the player making his own horror. The noises, monsters, darkness and subtle changes had their own personal meanings to each player. The player is given some means to fight back, but that depends on how brave you are. Looking at the PT demo, it relies on you finding the spooky, and then the spooky jumps in your face trying to "scare" you. That is how you startle, not scare. To me, the PT demo tells me everything I need to know, and Silent Hill it ain't. Del Taco cannot make good horror, or good movies for that matter. I enjoyed Hellboy, but even then it was largely forgettable.

If the game was going to rely entirely on this kind of "scare-factor", I would much rather just see the thing buried. Even though I don't like it, it feels right for the SH series to come to such a tragic end. It enjoyed success, but then it was raped and abused beyond recognition, until finally being put down behind some dumpster just to stop it's pitiful gurgling.

I'm sorry for this rant, but I am frustrated. SH deserved better. It angers me to see how a highly unique strand of eastern horror got mangled into some clusterfuck by western horror "enthusiasts." SH's idea is "show, don't tell", not "go into excruciating detail dissolving the mystery." I cannot even read the wiki anymore without finding the western games schlock mistaken for the original SH lore.

If I can find a copy under 10 bucks I'll pick it up.

The last 10 years have been very hard on SH. I don't think the demo was going to be anything like what they were going to make. Truth is that will never know what they wanted to do. The demo was more showing off the Fox Engine than anything else. I do like the demo. YOu can like the type of Horror SH is and still like other types. I get what you mean though.
Horror to people in the west is not what it was. The days of The Thing and Jacobs Latter are long gone.

I really never got touched by P.T.'s horror and Silent Hill is the only "horror series" that actually made me stop playing because it was too spooky. In fact SH is the only franchise of videogames I'd even refer to as horror.

Basically I completely agree with you.

Del Taco does his own horror, sure, and he seems to know what makes eastern horror tick, but the style and execution is always off. He understands the theory of what he's making, but he doesn't know on how to play off people's primal fears. A normalfag friend of mine, who is very plain of mind, went to see Crimson Peaks and even he was unimpressed. If even these people cannot be fazed by mediocre horror, what hope does that leave for the people with taste? Western horror should stop trying to copy what is popular and start taking risks.

When a game's atmosphere is so foreboding and oppressive that you actually hesitate to move forward, even though you know nothing is waiting for you up ahead shows the developers mastery of subtle horror. I remember playing SH3 a second time through, and even though I knew that there was nothing in the toilet stall when I knocked on it in the otherworld, when the stall door creaked open afterwards, I was so unnerved I ran out of the bathroom in a blind panic. Compare that to Del Taco's horror of jump-scares and creatures that are designed with pure shock in mind.

SH3 had a couple jump-scares, but didn't totally rely on them. The only time it went for shock was with the BBQ-dog. Everything else was pure atmosphere and playing on the player's fears. This wall in SH2 was very unnerving, because it was unexpected. In a world that is mostly filled with monsters unable to speak or think, for the first time something is addressing the player and even threatening him. This was enough to set me on edge after running around town blasting monsters in the face with my shotgun.

The biggest moments I was absolutely and completely unnerved in SH2 are as follows:

- reading about the killer who apparently is in SH4 and how he fucking STABBED HIMSELF TO DEATH IN THE NECK WITH A FUCKING SPOON.

- hear Eddie boast about he shot a dog and was getting his jollies watching it try to "eat its own guts" trying to lick the wound better

- Maria saying "James…" when you go to the top floor in the Hotel when you still don't have the fucking key to open the door to the rest of the floor.

To me it was SH4, I actively dreaded entering the hole and moving on with the game because I knew I'd be leaving the relatively safe place that was the apartment, sure I am "locked inside" the apartment, but everything is relatively normal albeit drab and dreary atmosphere. I don't want to go out there where the monsters are, especially after the first haunting where I felt I had brought something back to the apartment.

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite, but the mere thought of progressing Silent Hill 4 what was gave me maximum scare factor.

Also here the gay theory about SH4 that someone posted years back on a godawful site. But I really like the theory.

The spook factor in that game really goes straight through the roof.

Maria saying "James" just really fucking hit me on more of an emotional level but the other two, it literally gave me that thought of "Okay, I think I should take a break for a while because I'm almost feeling sick".

And Angela's scene where she goes into the flames with nothing indicating you could be successful if you went after her or not (I tried to, and learned you couldn't the hard way) just made me rethink game design in so many levels.

I was moved to my core when James found Maria again in a cell after being separated, only to find out after opening the cell door that Maria had actually died with a gaping wound in her abdomen with her face twisted in agony.

Draws an interesting parallel between James' original story. He fell in love with Mary, yet lost her to disease and "had to" put her down.. He found Maria in Silent Hill and just as he got to know her better, she was violently torn away from James, killed by Jame's alter-ego, the Pyramid Head. The town played on James' trauma and made him relive his biggest tragedy by fabricating Maria and her death.

And then at the end of the game he needs to kill her (Mary/Maria) again with a huge sword ( if you want to do it the most poetic way you can)

This was a good read. I need to replay SH4 now.

Who's replaying any of these games during the holiday weekend?

Want to give 2 or 3 another playthrough, but I'm currently preoccupied with Ace Combat 5.

I started 2 again last night.

That's what I was talking about, apparently the nurse (which name is "Lady Fukuy"I think) Is the new form that Lisa takes after the events of SH1, but I forgot what's she supposed to represent.

I still wonder what happen to her after the game.

Granted, the novel, Cihi, and Masahiro Ito see the in water as the canon ending, but at the end of it, it's really up for the players to decide what James' fate is.

Seeing that James told her about killing Mary, she might be facing her own nightmares in that town.

Cihi said in an interview that he thinks the Leave ending is the true one that James would pick.

I don't think an 8-year-old girl has enough darkness to manifest nightmares. Any girl besides Alessa anyway.

My mistake on that one, at first I thought Cihi choose the in water ending as the true one.

True, but it may or may not bite back at her when she grows up.

TL;DR Henry is a neet and possibly your usual Holla Forums poster

He himself said In water is what he would pick. I think he also said in an interview; divorce made him want to die.

And She has no guilt so why would the town haunt her.

I came into this thread expecting everyone to meme-out over the OP image, pretending it was from FNAF.
I'm disappointed, I thought we raised worse posters than this.

The rules says that we deserve at least one quality thread at month.

He says it right here. 15:55

That's why we can't let it fall off the catalog

Why the hell did they decide to change the VAs in the first place? The original ones were perfect.

Well fuck me then. I still like In Water more. I'm also depressed most of the time, so take that as you will.

holy shit.
the nightmares will not end will they?

The reason why I liked this series in the first place was the whole occult thing. The order is so established in the first 4 games. And the first 3 games one could learn so much about story telling and having secrets like memos to knowing more from a subjective view on things. So you can piece together a story.

I played downpour multiple times and there where no logic to the story, or the thing that made the games interesting in the first place. Instead of Silent Hill being a weird place like twin peaks or the town in uzumaki, a general weird place with minor explanation.
They turned it into a purgatory, dimensions or hell.

Unfortunately the last real survival horror game we got was Siren Blood Curse. I just want sony to refresh this Siren IP again. Hell, or someone taking a chance with a survival horror game again.

Too bad at the time people where kinda burned on the whole survival horror genre. Mainly because RE4 had the right idea of more action making it a action game, while dead space brought the action aspect of it really good but not the horror aspect except for jump scares, also the memos was about the cult but it seemed more insane than semi grounded.

So now there is nothing more than hur dur lets do the amnesia fps horror thing over and over again.

It's not like there's any ending where he escapes a horrible fate anyway. In Water he ends up dead, the Maria ending leaves him to repeat the cycle of caring for a terminally ill wife at least one more time, the Leave ending leaves him to carry the guilt with him for the rest of his life.

Because he loves Silent Hill more than you do

I wonder how this prick felt about P.T and SH?.
How was he involved with Downpour?.

I was more digging at wishing I was dead sometimes.

Toluca Prison is my favorite Silent Hill 2 location, mostly because I like how it's kinda of been "swept under the rug" by the town and you only find this horrid place by going really far down underneath the Historical Society.

South Ashfield Heights in Silent Hill 4 might just be my favorite place in a Silent Hill game, though. Every tenant, even though you never see any (aside from Richard and Eileen) has a story that's told through the environment or notes left behind. I really wish the game explored their fucked up personalities more.

Thanks for the video, it really shows how much love was put in the game. Too bad that the franchise died like it died. That reminds me, some should post "the making of" of the games.

he wrote it with one of the comics writers and another dude.
If he was not the producer, which means if the producers thinks the director is going another way then the project is needed he can threaten the budget. And effectively cancel the game, so its more or less hur I'm doing nothing but managing the money and see that they are going after the plans of said project.
btw that happen with homecoming, he more or less said hur this is not Silent Hill and changed it into something, but the game would have been shit either way but I don't know how shit it would be.

Also this prick is so arrogant that he had a remake of SH1 but since it would not work in a marketing sense they said re-imagined of sh1. It was so shit, not subtle or atmospheric.

You have probably heard of the stories of Bethesda being bullies, that is one way of doing it. Fuck with the budget of a game Tom did the same thing probably.

I just finished it again, I was trying to get the Maria ending but fucked up and got In Water because I like killing shit and forgot to heal.

Don't we all?

He was pretty well wholly responsible for it, he was the director.

You're in luck, it's on Youtube.

Maria ending is definitely the worst ending, but it has probably the greatest line delivery Cihi gave (aside from another line when talking to Angela on the burning staircase).

9:19, gives me fucking chills

I find it more funny than chilling really.

The problem with many they like del tacos style when it comes to art.

But he does not understand the Japanese Horror aspect of it. If you just read a manga or a horror book from Japan, you see where they are focused on the horror. One almost has to go deep into Japanese horror also but still not understand what makes it great.
Here is what I think del taco gets shit wrong with his horror flicks.

btw this is something I've picked up when I go on a regular play of Silent Hill 1-3 or Siren 1-3 if I don't read some manga or books then I mean Japanese ones.

So horror is more complex than one realizes.

I have a GTX 970 and an i3-2100

Is this good enough to emulate 2, 3 and 4?

Emulators are more CPU-intensive than GPU-intensive, so the i3 might be less than ideal, but sure, of course you could get them playable with that.

Better yet, just do the PC versions instead, there's a guide earlier in the thread.

J-horror also finds little girls and hair scary. Not sure why.

What order should I play the games in? Chronologically as they came out or Origins first?

If you gotta choose, probably as they came out, but I've only played 2, 3 and 4. What I've seen of Origins woudln't be a good place to start.

There is no official canon outside of 1-4, so starting with Origins is just going to confuse you with fan theories and retcons. Start with the first one.

don't play origins at all. play 1, 2, then 3. only 1 and 3 are a part of an official timeline and directly related to one another. the three games however have an overarching mythology if you're looking for that sort of thing.

4 is ok, some canon in this is mentioned in 2. everything else is trash.

DO NOT PLAY THE HD VERSIONS, they have a lot of missing things (literally, missing sound files, lighting effects, etc) that make the games WORSE, sometimes downright broken

I though Pyramid head was diety in the cult's religion, like Valtiel

r'ing a place for SH doujins, no weird shit just the characters.

Thanks!

the girl with long hair is just Japanese ghosts.its more or less an old Japanese theater play, I'm not joking since they are focusing on old shinto that messes with Zen Buddhism.

Where something bad happens to a woman or teenage girl. For example got raped and murdered or committed suicide comes back later for revenge something bad has to happen to her for revenge.

But there are other aspects of jhorror that has nothing to do with ghosts. So its not the little girls and hair that is scary its the ghosts that are scary, the hair is scary because its a sign of a ghost.

Its not like western traditions of ghosts.

Nope, the creators have confirmed several times that he's a manifestation specific to James. Even in SH2, where there are three murderers running around Silent Hill, James is the only one who ever encounters the Red Pyramid thing, besides Maria.

Here

maria is also a manifestation brah.
Probably why they could not stop with the red pyramid thing, also its funny they screwed up with homecoming bad ending where the protagonist becomes the red pyramid thing.

Well yeah, that's why she can also see the Red Pyramid thing.

Never heard of such a game

sorry fam, Ehentai and the sadpanda fix are fugged for me

riprip for me I guess

my brethren

Since I still haven't played them, but I'm about to I like this theory that valtiel and pyramid head are both reincarnations of the red god.

after Silent Hill 4 the room. The game sold like shit because the quality was not there, and it was in a time where Survival horror was more dried up than someones grandmas pussy, it was one year later RE4 came, and it became semi popular again.

So Team Silent got shut down because its more costly running a studio. Instead of outsourced development of a game to another studio.

So the rest of the SH game series was outsourced to other developers. So this is how it became a shitfest.

Maybe. If the Red Pyramid is the red god, why is there a second one after James kills Eddie? Why do they kill themselves after James accepts his guilt? Why does it never appear again until the fan games?

I was kidding

Yeah, since I still haven't played them I still don't know how much confirmation bias is in that video. Just found it interesting.

I know the supposed answer to this one because of his other video no idea about the other questions though.

Oh, right, I read right over that. Gosh, sorry for spoiling some of the ending.

It's alright I got spoiled on most of the endings from those videos already just going in for the spooks.

this is why I like the Japanese survival horror games because of allot lore and creation myths.

For a minor spoiler the red Pyramid thing is a manifestation of James, because of the spiritual power that lurks in Silent Hill. The order corrupted the spiritual power and it became about the religion within the order. After Alessa was impregnated by the demon, and since she did not want to give birth to a demon god she split her soul in half. Whom Harry Mason found, and the nightmare of Alessa went out of control because she is telepathic. So she tried to stop the birthing ritual since the other half of her soul came back to Silent Hill, so her plan of splitting the soul became a fail until Mason killed the demon and got a new daughter which is another form of her soul.

Nr2. James got called into Silent Hill because of his guilt, and that game is more about the aftermath of the first game and explains the lore more with memos. James is in no shape or form related to Mason or Alessa. So the second game is more of a spin off than a true sequel.

Nr3 start right off when the new alessa soul is older, so she has to rebirth god. So if Valtiel is the red god than how can we not see him in nr1 or anyother manifestations of him in nr 1.
And since the spiritual power that got corrupted in nr1, one would assume that the spiritual power would want to bring forth the red god to help them the order, kinda like the otherworld got brought fourth by the spiritual power and the telepathic powers to begin with.

That is my 2 cents.

There's a room in SH3 with some bookshelves and a counter, there's no items or anything. The moment the camera switches you hear something fall over, but when you change the camera back absolutely nothing in the room has moved and the lights dim about 2 shades.

I don't know why, but out of all the shit in silent hill that room get me bad.

Ghosts seem to be a big part of Japan. I guess it's like how in the States we used to find demons and being controlled by devils scary ( e.g. Rose Mary Baby, Exorcist.) But that's only really scary if you're a Christian.

The best moment is walking down that hallway and BAM he's right in front of you with bars in the way. He won't move at all, just looks at you. You enter a room and when you come out, he's gone.

the sound design in the entire series has always been exceptional. There are a couple of rooms like this that come to mind:

SH2
-wandering around the prison cells after you've taken care of any annoying monsters, the sound of something gigantic and bassy stepping around above you on the guard's walk. Made even scarier because James will auto-target it with a firearm too
-the giant empty field/gallows is dead silent except for the sound of something galloping around you is HORRIFYING. Especially the way it starts quiet and builds up to a pretty loud noise and then gets quiet again, like an invisible creature just ran by you

SH3
-forget exactly the part but somewhere before the apartment or around the time you're running around the offices, you end up in some decrepit apartments where you have to push a mattress through a hole, but while you're standing around there is a really goddamn scary sound effect of someone dragging something heavy around above you. Super disconcerting.

SH4
-not as great as the previous ones but in the water prison the sound of someone walking around in the inner porton of the panopticon is made even spookier when they pass through the peephole blocking the light briefly with their body.

This is going to sound so dumb but its true. So some of the big J-horror directors wanted to find something that is scary and what would and what would not work when it came to horror.

So the thing that was scary and more believable was ghosts, they had done some few hell movies but it did not really caught on with the audience. So what did caught on was ghosts.

So before when I liked j-horror they sorta experimented and in many ways I would argue that many of the survival horror games that came from Japan reflected the experimentation of concepts.

That's probably why Team Silent went for more occult imagery and traditional western horror elements like haunted towns and demonic cults and little girls with psychic powers, since they were going for traditional western horror. Alessa / Cheryl don't look too much like the ghosts you'd see in J-horror movies.

Speaking of Rosemary's Baby, don't forget they named a street after Ira Levin.

Can't take SH4's sound design seriously after encountering those monsters in the hospital that belch when you hit them.

And we have shit like Salem and Native Americans

Vincent is a two timing, duplicitous mother fucker.

Alessa split her soul in half that became Cheryl.
While she was in a hospital where she was under magical and life-support so how in the fudge could she become a ghost?

Since the "order" tricked the soul to come back so she could be whole and birth the god.
So in other words how could a ghost give birth to something?

I wasn't saying they were ghosts.

After reading it, I thought you said or implying they where ghosts. Which screwed with my head.

It's cool, I shouldn't have used the word "ghosts" in the first place, I just meant that they look non-Japanese. I thought ghost would be understood as "spooky little girl" in the context of the discussion.

I still believe he said this in seriousness, but the twist is that almost all the monsters you see kinda have a theme tying to valtiel, the raggy brown tunics and all. Maybe he sees your "monsters" as "angels" or "messengers of God"

maybe he's just a prick that likes fucking with people?

He is just a profiteer, he wants to kill Heather at first then realizes that he can use her. Since if "the god" is born he will no longer make a profit from them.

And as he says he has worldly pleasures and questions the other protagonists faith.

Finally went ahead and watched the entirety of this (and the Downpour review) and holy shit what a fucking travesty. Fuck the west. China please conquer us all soon, you're soulless motherfuckers, but at least you're better than that.

Also those guys are extremely unfunny and autistic but their content is good.

they would have to effectively repay the VAs to use their voice, and somehow they found it cheaper to just redo the voices

Is there Downpour video worth a watch? They seem very wannabe Channel Awesome. Unless someone else has made Silent Hill videos that instate things I already think.

Sure, but its a lot of heavy criticism that most people won't find very interesting. But all well-reasoned.

More so than half of their other Silent Hill videos, really. It has a lot of good evidence to show how badly the Downpour creators misunderstood the series.

Don't worry, it's just a joooke.

I'll give 'em another peek

has anyone ever though what they might see if they went to SH? I don't think I have the guilt to make anything like Pyramid Head. Just depression and sexual confusion. I'm sure the nurses would all be traps and everything would be gloomy.

It's a shitty clique at this point, pricks don't deserve more royalties.

Elaborate?

Speaking of which, anyone else notice how the meat locker in which you fight Eddie was full of those bloated sacks of meat in boy shorts?

I always loved how eddie's face morphed from the first times you see him in the apartments/bowling alley until you see him in the prison and the jail and he looks completely deranged. His eyes get darker, his mouth becomes a sneer. Also helps that his VA nails the mix of pathetic rage his character embodies.

Something else I think the series doesn't get enough credit for are the normal character models. From 1-4 and maybe downpour no bully the character models are the perfect blend of realism and vaguely cartoon Japanese render. They still look great today, especially 3 and 4. In fact, aside from some muddy textures here and there, 2-4 still are incredibly gorgeous games in general.

Sorry for the terrible quality, couldn't find any better.
