The one thing that sort of helps for me is turning off some of the other devices in the house's internet connection or playing at times of day when there is likely to be little traffic.

The problem is that Nintendo didn't expect that many people to actually play this game, much less a year following its release.

It wouldn't bother me as much though if they didn't subtract experience and heat meter points as if I lost every-time it happens. That can just kill your desire to play.

Depends how aggressively Alpha plays, and when. The suction bomb rushes aren't so good at inking the zone on Underpass - I always get a third of my bombs stuck in the trees - so, if Alpha decides to dilly-dally around and pay too much attention to the snipers, they'll get taken out by the slosher and the splash, allowing Bravo to take the zone with a splat bomb rush. On the other hand, suction bomb rushes are great for inking the… the places. Hang on, I'll draw it. Okay, there. If Alpha keeps their heads cool, they can secure an early lead and use bomb rushes to prevent Bravo from getting even near the zone.

I give this to alpha 6/10 times. This matchup is incredibly chaotic - a small difference in the players' choices could make a massive difference in the game's result.

Not that it matters much, but if you haven't noticed, the game is 100.0% gorgeous. The biggest graphical problem is, what, clipping on a few clothing items? A few low-poly objects in the background of Inkopolis? Maybe an FPS drop when all eight players are onscreen at once?

Having a flashback night was fun. We should do it again when there's another big announcement or when we get a bigger influx of newbies. It was crazy to go back and see how much things have changed fundamentally - even something as straightforward as E-Litres only, no items, final destination wasn't the same as it was during Damage Summer because of the changes to the weapons (pic 1 in case any newbies wonder what I mean when I say that). Same with the luna blaster, although eight lunas on tower control is still an unfocused frenzy of violence.

Highlights include:

I didn't really get a chance to say this while we were playing, but you guys are a great community to play games with. This thread and the weekly matches we have are a perfect middle ground between being dead and being flooded with cancer like [SQUID FORUM] or /ink/. We might not produce as much dank OC as we maybe could, and we may not be able to reliably hold our own against Jap death squads or good clanfags, but we're all solid A-rank or higher players who challenge each other and don't get too bent out of shape over patch notes or nerfs.

If there's anyone in here who is cautious about joining the Mumble to squad up or play on the weekend, please don't worry about it. I would not have played this game for a year without the community here to keep things interesting.

When I see a squid party-er, if it's on the enemy team, I will go out of my way to shoot them. If it's on my team, I can identify who it is, so I go to my friends list after the game and block them.

Yeah, those are all screenshots from in development. Gusher Gauntlet doesn't look like the fourth picture (though Octosniper Ramparts does, save for the gusher itself;) the Octocopter at the front of the third picture isn't in the final version of Shifting Splatforms; and the area in the second picture seems to have been removed from the game entirely, though it bears some resemblance to the start of Lair of the Octoballs.

There's anti-aliasing at all? Please tell me how to enable it. Because the aliasing genuinely hurts my eyes from strain and I have a hard time playing even an hour straight.

Finally got to A rank earlier today after the hell that was A-. I took a long break from the game, only playing the occasional splatfest, and I was finally willing to jump into ranked again.

I'm hoping things get easier from here, but from what I've heard, teammates don't get any more competent, and I wonder about how far the N-Zap 85 will get me.

I still hate rainmaker. Reverse-CTF just isn't my thing.

Doesn't help that half the time, I pick up the rainmaker and start to charge a shot, only to lose it to a teammate who rushed at the same time. I usually end up dying when this happens. By the time the game sorts itself out, I'm normally 3/4 of the way to death and I don't have an inkzooka shot to fire, so I get fucked.

Personally I find some of the changes to the Squid Sister's dialogue to feel a little wonky at times.

Also how the fuck should we know? Nobody has done a full literal text translation of the game.

The European version is actually a bit closer to the original Japanese version. The NA release had a few changes like making Spyke sound like Sid Vicious or Octavio being like "check deez beats out, yo."

The only thing this extremely accurate piece is missing is the animosity of the dogs vs cats splatfest. There was still salt 8 months after the incredibly justified and 100% fair and objective Man's best friend victory entire fiasco ended. And I hope we get one last one like it

A rank is a lot better than A-, at least in terms of teammates.
I still get my fair share of retarded idiots and I'm oft carrying my team, but I'm pretty sure I'll still be able to power through into A+ in the next day or so.

Just taking a break because I'm still not a fan of rainmaker. I always get some teammate who fucks everyone over by stalling when we're losing.

Only way that's possible now is if the devs pull out a surprise 8x Multiplier. Which would have swung the other way at a 6x multiplier.

The majority of the Cats Vs Dogs Salt came from not knowing the judging criteria beforehand.

The final score surprise had me a little bit salty considering at that time they had the matchmaking coded such that games consisted of teams of 1/2/3 Cats vs 4 Dogs. (We all know now how tri-squads go) Realising this I stayed on long after reaching Royalty to help prevent the ratio from dropping below the threshold that caused uneven teams. Even won a couple of those disadvantaged games as well. It's a wonderful feeling.
Even with the odds stacked against the Cats we still managed to pull off more wins so I was happy.

What really got my Sodium Chloride going was the Waterslides vs Rollercoasters Splatfest. Mainly because I put in sooo much playtime 150 games (Over 8 hours) I believe and Won about 64% of them or so. Continuing long after reaching Royalty. Then at results time still losing this time knowing the rules.

After that disappointment Splatfest became just a snail grab for me. Royalty and done.

Then the meta formed and Splatfest was decided before the Squid sisters even announced what the themes were due to the internet spoiling everything first.

Why do octolings make perfect whores?

I think for the sequel, it should all just be one giant splatfest where one side plays as Inklings & the other as Octolings where points are tallied internationally every week and the side that's in the lead gets special prizes. And if you change sides you have to wipe your data and start back at square one with a new Avatar.

I wish they did a Sticks vs Gyro Splatfest early on.

I actually could kind of dig that, although I'd prefer to not have data loss in case you feel like playing a different side for the week, but I think it'd really help tying in with the plot everyone was talking about at the start of the thread for the sequel

It gives me memories of the Nintendo Vs XBOX Mario Kart tournament where one side pretty much wins all the time to the point it just ends up being popularity 90% to Inklings.

I do like the idea of a huge event though.
Sort of like an 8v8 or 16v16 on 2 or 4 maps simultaneously.
Or use of more of the single player mechanics like the ink cannon.

I want there to be some sort of co-op mode. Like a 2-player or 4-player horde survival mode against single player enemies. I don't know if that would tax the system too much, but it would let them reuse assets and gameplay mechanics.

I'm reminded of the Uncharted multiplayer. Uncharted 2 had exceptionally good co-op.

Dumbasses only use the Krak-On Roller for the specials invincibility and OHK attack since they're too stupid and/or lazy to use the actual roller when they're in a fight.

God forbid the first weapon in the game not teach players to be lazy and rely on their special too much.

You can use the lower side platform of the main chokepoint to climb up to the side alleyway then flank from behind, granted this hinges on whether an enemy is blocking the alleyway but that's just one way to get around the chokepoint safely. Admittedly the chokepoint in the center of the map is a bitch but still I'll take a map with a shitty chokepoint over Moray and Saltspray any day of the week.

So when an E-Litre is camping in the center of Moray Towers or Camp Triggerfish and me and my teammates can't progress because his gun can shot us from the opposite side of the map and I can't approach him because he'll see me coming and I'll have to deal with his teammates first.
Turns out this entire time all had to do was outsmart my Splash-O-Matic shots to go further than the E-Litre's. Ground breaking strategy user.

Yeah, Nintendo has always been about that couch-filling family fun for me. Splatoon is the least played game with friends over because it's so "single player"

One of the problems with any numbered sequel to this game is that whatever could be improved upon it could probably be improved through an update. A sequel would have to have a different play experience unless you wanted people to just abandon the first game altogether because it's out of date. But I don't see why people can't have incentive to still buy or play part 1 & 2.

You could have different saves, I suppose. The one problem would be a guy playing both sides and reaping the rewards rather than having any commitment and not immersing himself in the whole "OCTOLINGS! INKLINGS!" beef in or outside the game, but maybe this could be fixed by having two modes, one a more normal "pick a side, pick a class" mode and the other a more customized character quest experience.

The best way to fix that from happening could be to focus more on individuals & squads than the factions themselves. Basically, make it where you have two factions competing but where teams and players within each faction are also to some degree competing with one another for prizes & prestige. That way, if one side becomes too big, it actually gives incentive for players to migrate to the other side, because less players on that side, the easier it would be to climb the ranks of that side. And by forcing players to make commitments by deleting their avatar to start over as another faction, the strength of each side might be less in the numbers of scrubs and more in the skill of their top S+ rank players who have committed themselves to playing 1,000 hours as an Octo/Inkling and the side that has more players could easily lose because all the C-rank scrubs keep getting popped. Developing the Octolings as characters so people want to play as them is a different matter I think and ultimately depends on the writers and designers, but at least mechanically, you can balance it out where the side with more players could easily be the losing side.

I don't know how to fix the server problem though

THE RETURN

So keep this huge event going for like a month straight, sort of a tie in with the story above of Marie leaving to start a solo career in Octo Valley, Octolings vs Inklings, with new maps featuring plenty of the single player mechanics, including ink sponges, ink zip lines, and all that good stuff.

Have the event round off with Callie and Marie tallying up all points from the weeks prior, and give out a special prize for everyone participating and a special prize to the winners for all the weeks total, and Octolings and Inklings able to visit both the main Octoling City and Inkopolis proper, as a sort of cultural exchange.

From there, ranked mode opens up for all players above level 10 (more or less everyone) and you can choose from Octoling or Inkling from now on.

Maybe throw in a little Co-Op mode as pointed out to tide things over, including complex maps with plenty of movement enhancers (zip lines sponges, the works) and a longer campaign (10-12 hours), and we could call it good.

One last thing

This is still one of the cutest Splatoon pictures out there.

I mean, something like that would be hard to implement for splitscreen, since I imagine it'd be too taxing for the system to run smoothly most of the time. I mean more as an additional online mode.

That gets me thinking: what will they do with the minimap gamepad mechanic if the NX doesn't have a second screen? It's a big part of the game.

I was thinking of just releasing the sequel later on in the Nx's lifetime Hopefully it's just a standard console, but considering Nintendo hasn't said anything at all really I don't know what to expect other than attempted sudoku on my part, allowing for Splatoon to run it's course.

As for the idea of different saves, I guess I don't mind that too much, I agree that having someone just pick a winning side rather than having loads and loads of FUN .

If the NX is going to be able to play Wii U games, then Splatoon will definitely have a life after the Wii U console itself.

My problem is that we live in a day and age when console game could easily have a more expanded life cycle than before because of DLC and installed updates.

It would be pretty fucking kikish on Nintendo's part to make a "Splatoon 2" which is actually just Splatoon with a few more maps and a few more single player levels, stuff that could have easily been added to Splatoon 1 through a cheaper or even free update. Stuff like that might have been okay back in the days of N64 where the sequel could get away with just being an updated version of the original game but not now.

These days a follow up has to do a lot more to justify its existence in my opinion. So, with Splatoon 2, why not change up the experience. At least this way, you can still print and sell the first game, maybe even bundled with its sequel. Maybe even tie the two together more intimately than that.

Plus, the NX is supposed to offer a "new way to play" right?

Unfortunately whenever Nintendo tries to change something up (Wind Waker, Mario Party 9/10, Metroid Federation Force, Star Fox Zero, Even Splatoon Gyro Controls) There's always that backlash of vocal people just wanting more of the same old.
I'm glad Nintendo stuck to their ink guns with innovation and gimmicks.

The problem was that the team behind Splatoon had developed a game lacking in an iconic main character. Miyamoto's suggestion was more of an ultimatum, in the sense of "you better come up with some good characters I can sell or I'll make this shit a fucking Mario game."

It was probably Miyamoto hounding them to make marketable characters that is the reason Callie & Marie were created to make up for the fact that you just play as run of the mill squids, something which bothered Miyamoto's autism.

Paper Mario 64 is a solid RPG, TTYD is one of the best RPGs ever made (and would be nearly perfect if not for the low difficulty), and even Super Paper Mario, although not as good as its predecessors, had decent writing and some neat gameplay with the perspective swapping mechanic.

As soon as Miyamoto touched it, however, we got Sticker Star, a game which actively discourages the player from fighting enemies and actively scrubbed all the charm and character out of the series.

What I'm saying is that in the old days when the only games that could be updated and modded were PC games, you could get away with a game and its sequels on consoles being more or less clones of one another. These days it's harder because DLC and updates are not unique to PC games anymore. So there's no reason to rush to make Splatoon 2 unless Splatoon 2 is going to do something very new that couldn't just be done for cheaper through updating the original.

I think Miyamoto's role in overseeing Splatoon was just the right amount.

It's just the white cubes/cuboids 3D shapes that are used to represent characters without having to model.or animate them to see if the "gameplay" is fun in the early prototype phase.

If they modeled and animated characters for a prototype that wasn't fun, it would have been a waste of time and money, so the white blocks are used instead.

Those white blocks just happen to resemble tofu to the Japanese (Even Resident Evil has a tofu mode in reference to the "white block" used to test the games early design for testing collision detection).

If you were making a 2D game (like a platformer) you would probably just use a 2d square/rectangles.

I think what you want is to have features of Splatoon 2 do things that the original couldn't do because of the Wii U's hardware limitations.

Eg, like having 4 player local split screen or having co-op in a single player mode or 2 player online split screen. (Basically anything better than Battle Dojo).

Or having stages that can be larger and accommodate more than 8 players.

I had a really frustrating set of losses earlier today due to retarded teammates, and I almost ranked down to A- (I had 1 point left), but I managed to get my shit together as the day went on. I had a 5 win streak against some stacked teams to finally pull myself up a rank.

Congrats user, welcome to purgatory. You managed to make it through the circles of hell, but to get to S+ you must absolve yourself of sins. And unlike purgatory you can still go down in rank, so have fun with that, but with hard work, the right combination of game mode and map, and teammates with at least double digit brain cells, you may persevere to S and begin the true climb.

Nothing will be more devastating than when you drop out of S for the first time, be prepared for that
