I'm a really new (as in, just started last week) to Grand Strats. I never got into them before except for a few tries of scratching the surface, and it never really sparked my interest.

Now, however, I'm going on a "big picture" strategy game binge, and GS is essentially exactly that. I tried Stellaris; not a bad start, but needs way more development, and it's not very deep at all, as far as GS goes. I tried EU4, but something about it is just tedious and annoying. Outside of waging war and maintaining troops, it feels like most of your time in EU4 is spent running out the clock: for gold, for Monarch points, to build ships for trade, to wait for research, etc.

The extent of my play with EU4 so far is playing protugal and Castile a few times from 1444 onwards. Something just felt like it was missing, like the game wasn't engaging. I tried Distant Worlds, but it starts stuttering and lagging like Stellaris does before I even warp to a second system (and I have a powerful rig).

I want to like GS but this shit is making it feel hopeless. Is there a "best" Grand Strat out there?

Research the games, especially the negatives, and go older user. Vicky 2 is pretty popular and a lot of people have decent praise for EU3. I'd fetch a cheap version or pirate for either. HoI can also be good.
