Here's a fun game for you

Here's a fun game for you.
lets say I was making a game.
And lets say I need to find a genre of music that best fits an ice level.

not just a couple of songs, an entire genre of music.
I have a whole world made of fire, and nothing but Salsa and Tango music plays, a world made of water that has nothing but Ocean Grunge playing.
etce tc

but what of the ice world?

Christmas music

That was what I had originally thought.
However Christmas music can take the form of different genres.

Jingle bell rock - pop rock
honey it's cold outside - Swoon
Hark the Lord - Hymn

It's quite fucking difficult.

Something with high pitched sounds.

but can you think of a single genre of music that has this?

Pshhh ez

Viking music. Or what people assume Viking music sounds like. Just grab anything Nordic/Scandinavian from back when they had hair on their balls.

Alternatively, mellow country music sung by Canadians.

Every genre has it. Just make it sound good and you're ok.

I don't want to divulge the details.
But lets say that I HAVE to assign a single genre of music to the theme of ice.
You can't listen to salsa music and not think of fire.
you can't listen to folk music and not hear earthy sounds.
You literally can't hear ocean grunge and not think you aren't underwater.
there has to be something for ice.

This might work. let me take a listen to a handful of songs

If Viking doesn't work, maybe Scottish. They lived on cold-ass mountains forever, surely that's close enough.

Also, what's Ocean Grunge? When I think of ocean music I either think of traditional Hawaiian, reggae and related genres, or surf rock.

Depends what the tone is, the pacing of the level, what the setting actually looks like, the genre of the game, etc.

I'd say a single stringed. orchestral instrument for ambience. Like a violin. That's what I'm doing for my shit, at least.

I don't expect you to enjoy this. Really it's kinda fucking shit. But I like stupid genre's of music.

Sea of Dogs is god-tier. It's Over is one of the best vaporwave-esque songs I've ever heard. Great stuff.

Shit with chimes, but not gay shit.

Whatever the fuck every single Rare or Nintendo ice level sounds like.

Damn it dude

Fredrich Chopin
Romantic era

anything romantic

Falcom uses speed metal for desert areas
subvert what's expected

for ice, I think jazz could work well

Example two, also Rare, but sounds a lot like what you see in Paper Mario's ice world. Atmospheric as FUCK.

Listening to it directly is somewhat aggravating, but if this was just background noise for a video game, it could work.

Nope. Has to be an entire genre of music.
Did you know that there are 1853 different genre's of music.

and that's just shit that's been written down.
Shit like Cloud Rap, ocean Grunge, Vaporwave, etc.

I was wondering.
Would Romantic Classic be different then regular classical?

Hadn't considered Jazz for ice. my work well I'll take a listen

I think music won't catch Ice worlds well.

Try ambience, like wind and the like.

I think you just answered OP's question, honestly. "Ambient" music. Works very well in worlds that feel more isolated or deserted.

This guy has a point, I'd say.
But if you're gonna have an ice level, then you can't really go wrong with some gentle piano music on top of some echoey ambiance.
This song has the kind of tone I'm trying to convey to you, but this is a bit too active to be vidya background music. I hope you get the idea.

Are you making a rhythm game or some shit? Is ambient music not a genre? Ambient orchestral?

The Residents

Regular Classical = Mozart.

And Joseph Haydn

I'd say, minimal piano and/or wind instruments. Possibly smooth, ambient jazz: the coolest genre of music in the history of mankind. Tones so cold that they freeze your eardrums.

Ambient is already used for something else.
I guess I can put that with Chillwave…
ugh

Ambient music is a genre I just had it picked for something else, but you know thinking on it I think what I was gonna do might work with Chillwave…

YOU FUCKING NIGGA, I LOVE YOU MATE.
AMBIENT JAZZ IT IS.

EBM

Something like this would be cool.

What about this?

…maybe "dark wave" ?

To be honest some of the songs from Cowboy Bebop started playing in my head while I was thinking.

If this couldn't fit on a serene frozen landscape then I don't know what could.

Fast-paced ice level music is the best. Desolate frozen wasteland type music's okay too.

Just vocals

Here's a couple of tunes you can use as an example.
This is the theme of the Snow biome in Terraria…

It really depends with that genre but try DyE - Fantasy or try anything by Baths/Goetic

…and here is the theme of the Frost Moon. If you're not aware it's a long horde/boss battle royal event.

Also bumping this:

Shit by Chelsea Wolfe is perfect.

nice beat

Jazz fusion needs more exploration

This is also a good choice, Didn't even know Darkwave was a thing.

yeah

If only Thrash metal wasn't taken by something else.

Same with Acapella.

hm hm hm

Very christmas sounding.

Whatever genre you'd say this classic is from.

Russian cold wave?

(i can't feel a difference with dark wave, maybe its just slower?)

Chiptune I'd wager.

Russian Coldwave is one of those things where there is only like 2 or 3 bands that do the genre. Making it kind of hard to tackle.

This is a good time to point out that both Ice themes and Crystal or Fairy land themes have alot of overlap.

Something along the lines of Bel Canto ?, though i am not sure what genre do they fit in

This sounds like an interesting idea for an OST.

What type of game are you making, OP?

i'm not gonna give out details, who knows if i'm even making a game at all?

CONFIRMED! OP is making a game about mimics!!

I'd play Mimic Simulator.

something with slow, zen-like ambience and piano.

embed related.

you can find more things like that by looking into Metroid prime and its ice-themed-area tracks.

Something with violins…and techno on the background

Synthwave

This is perfect. Here's your answer, OP.
