It works, most of the time. It gets the job done. Files aren't nearly as bloated as FRAPS, in my experience. Worth a shot.

I use OBS, even when it was the de facto, I found FRAPS to be garbage. Why wouldn't you use OBS? It's free, first of all, and secondly it's made by the same team who makes XSplit and it does both local recording and streaming, you can do both at the same time or one or the other.

Problem for me is that while OBS itself works well, the files I get can't be edited in my favorite program (camtasia studio). This has significantly delayed any of my own recording work. What editing program would you suggest? It doesn't need to be fancy, just free or available on the high seas

It's super efficient. Almost no noticeable performance hit, and I love the shadow recording. It records the last 1-20 minutes of gameplay (you choose how much) and you hit a button if something interesting happens.

I found 2 minutes is about perfect for webms, since they're rarely longer than a minute anyway. My only issue with it is that REFUSES to let me switch the save location. I want it in my HDD, not my fucking SSD.

Adobe Premiere (which isn't free), it uses just about every format. Alternative re-encode your footage in XMedia Recode (which IS free) to a format that your program does use, and then use that footage.

That's not enough, I'm looking to make full on videos, not 20 minute replays. Your other issues make me not want to use it either, thanks.

The free version of Lightworks works fine for me. Then I convert to WebM with XMedia Recode.

I just mentioned the shadow recording because that was primarily what I used to make videos. It's also a fairly unique thing to Shadowplay. You can record as long as you want, you're not limited to 20 minutes, you just have to hit record manually.
