That's not "far down the road." America could easily produce enough grain to feed most of its population, it has enough houses to house most of its homeless. Capitalism enforces artificial scarcity.

IMO, communism wont work until the economy can provide everybody with everything they could reasonably want. Not just food and shelter and all our most basic needs - it will need to provide a very comfortable life for all. I just dont see people buying into communism, which goes against our nature of accumulating resources, trying to give our offspring a leg up and trying to make ourselves more attractive than our peers to potential mates….unless everyone is incredibly comfortable, at least on the level our rich folks are comfortable today.

We are a long way from there.

Not sure, but an American socialism would be much more libertarian and legalistic than what we got in the USSR. Big emphasis on sacred, non-socialist documents and an individualist character.
