Also, Evolutions, the Forerunner triollogy I can totally get why people don't like the, they do ruin the mystery, but they are also very well wrtitten, Broken Circle, Last Light, Hunters in the Dark, and Shadows of intent are all fantastic and are Fall of Reach tier or better, and there are plenty of other 343 era novels that are at least as good as first strike.

Also, Halo 4 and 5's issues have nothing to do with the environment design or skyboxes (Hell, 343's skyboxes are legitimately on par with bungie's if not better, something i'll demonsrate once I get to the renders and screenshot stuff) I'd also argue that 4 isn't really a bad game, it's just sup par for a Halo game (4's plot and writing is legimately godawful and is actually as bad as people say though) and 5 has legitimately good halo MP, arguably better then 3 and IMO clearly better then reach's and 4's.IMO 5's MP plays like halo 2 if it actually had good weapon balance, and titanfall's movement systems.

But this isn't the place for us to debate if 343 has ruined the franchise or not, so just lemmie dump art. If you wanna disscuss this, make a halo thread and i'll be happy to post there before I get called a 343 apologist for daring to imply that they've done anything that's not pure garbage.

Of the ones I mentioned? John isn't in any, but many other important characters are.

- Half jaw (the spec ops shipmaster) is the main character of Shadow of Intent, which is also written by staten (ie the guy who made halo lore to begin with and wrote contact harvest).

- Last light has Fred, Linda, Kelly, and the Surviving S3's from ghosts of onyx in it as major characters and half of it is from fred's viewpoint though you'd really have to read Glasslands before Last Light, which… has issues. It's not terrible, but it's not fantastic. I'd put it on par with cole protocole. But then it's other sequels, Thrusday war and Mortal dictata, only get worse. Thursday war is still bearable and does have good moments, mortal dictata is one of the few cases where I feel 343 hate is full justified

- Hunters in the Dark follows the elites from halo 3 that players 3 and 4 played as in Co-op.

- Broken circle has all new characters but IMO it's the best of this batch, i'd say on par with Ghosts of onyx. It takes place during the formation of the covenant, and then follows a characters descdent during the great schism. It also features a prophet which isn't a piece of shit which is neat.

- There's also two other novella's which i hadn;t mentioned that came out recently, being New Blood and Saints Testrimoney. Saint's testimoney's main character is the AI that Black Team had. New blood follows the squad from ODST but it kills off one of them. I thought it was handled okay, but a lot of fans are buttmad.

- The forerunner novels take place back when the forerunners are around, so obviously no characters from the existing lore are featured beyond the two forerunners that are in the halo 3 terminals, which are the ones you see in halo 4. Obviously the gravemind shows up too if you count him. IMO, these are actually bar none the best halo novels, but they totally reveal all the details on who the forerunners were and where the flood came from, so it DOES ruin the mystery of it a bit. But they are really fucking well written, they start out as this very dull, dense, almost hard sci fi story, but it spirals into psychological and then cosmic horror as the flood get more and more involved.

I can tell you what you should start with and give you a reccomended reading order if you tell me what you've already read/played.

Also, to clarify on how Glasslands/last light/thrusday war/mortal dictata work:

Glasslands is a direct sequel to Ghosts of Onyx. It also has a bunch of new characters in addition to blue team/halsey/mendez/the S3's which are doing their own thing that then intersects with them.

Last light is the sequel that then covers where blue team/the s3's go after that, thursday war is the sequel that follows the new character and halsey, ant mortal dictata is then the sequel to thursday war.

Oh, and I forgot to go over evolutions. It's an anthology book that covers a bunch of shit. A lot of the motion comics you might have seen from a few years back are adapated from it.

The highlights IMO is a a short story about a bunch of marines sent to control a prison riot, but it turns out ONI was using the flood to experiiment on the prisoners and it turns into this very surival horror-y thing. There's also a story about how the rookie became an ODST, as well as what happened with cortana when she was left with the gravemind.

The last one I mentioned is actually written by the same author as who did glasslands/thursday war/mortal dictata but it's way better then any of the 3.

Thel Va'dmee or something? One of the most underrated characters in the lore IMO - Staten's writing wasn't anything special - great ideas, but very mild execution in Contact Harvest, I'd hope his skills improved somewhat.

I must say I've read lots of very top shelf sci-fi since I last picked up a Halo novel, though. Dan Simmons, Asimov, etc. not really sure I'd enjoy a Halo book in the same way anymore - I can read WH40k, but that's because the war porn is non-stop deliciously thick. You should read the Eisenhorn trilogy if you haven't read or even give a shit about WH40k, it will make you fall in love with it.

I've read original trilogy, cole protocol, ghosts of onyx, and contact harvest. Plus the graphic novel. And Halsey's notebook.

Well, i'm not gonna claim it's on the same tier as those, but the forerunner novels are differently more like classic sci fi and is written more like them then the rest, or at least it is untill the flood really get involved and it turns into fever dream psychological horror and then full out cosmic horror.

Don't bother with thursday war and mortal dictata unless you really wanna know what happens with the kilo 5 team introduced in glasslands.

I really, really like the forerunner books, but they are very dense reads, and the y can drag on, a lot, and they do pull the curtains back on a lot of mystery, so it's up to you if you wanna do them.
