No, this is not a solution to any problem that currently exists. Emails sent using standard public key encryption are just as secure for the time being as this quantum encryption stuff.

Not really, this is being spooled up due to fears that public key cryptography will be compromised by quantum computers. As far as we know good implementations of public key cryptography is still valid and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Traditional computers can not crack it before the heat death of the universe. Even assuming mores law will remain valid it would be many decades or centuries before computers could crack it and even then you can simply increase the key size. The only foreseeable hickup could be quantum computers and they have not been proven to be able to crack public.

One thing to be aware of is that if quantum computers do end up cracking public key anything you sent in the past protected by that was recorded could retroactively be cracked. The NSA by policy keeps all encrypted data that they cannot decript for ever.

Also you can be just as secure as this quantum stuff by simply generating a symmetric key yourself and physically giving it to the other parties.
