Something really pisses me off about Overwatch, mobas and a lot of multiplayer titles as a whole, and that's the fact that more often than not you're relying on hud elements to tell what's an enemy than the graphics of the actual game.

Take a game like TF2 or even Tribes Ascend, every class had distinct tells that you could recognize immediately. The silhouettes and VAs in TF2. Unique sounds for spinfusor variants, different bulkiness in armor. Specific VAs for VGS for each class in Ascend. Also the colors.

Then you have shit like Smite or the more recent Battlefields, where a lot of characters look very alike(For example see Raijin and Ravana in Smite, or any class besides recon in Battlefield) and are only distinguishable up close or by whatever the HUD tells you. This drives me up the wall specially in Battlefield because what you are aiming at isn't an enemy, but the magical red triangle that pops up on top of the enemy via that spotting mechanic

With overwatch it looks to be very similar. What bugs me is that the silhouettes are kind of distinct but you still can't tell who's on whose team without hud elements because everyone has to have their skins and cosmetics now, god forbid someone takes the effort to make skins faction appearance related.

I played one game of Mercy in the beta and she seemed like a juiced up version of the TF2 medic. Why is huehue so much better? I didn't try him out because I only played a handful of matches.

He's just a lot easier to play with randoms. If you've got some friends playing together mercy can actually be a bit better, but she gets shit on easily if you don't. Mei can one shot her for instance

This basically puts Holla Forums on edge whenever BHUGs are talked about on Holla Forums, because with the sheer amount of money someone like Blizzard puts into advertising, its within the realm of possibility that some of it is going to paying people to go to various social media and forums and hype up and forumslide their BHUG, with the anonymous nature of chans making it harder to indentify Honestly, from a business standpoint, stealth marketing on Holla Forums would be a complete waste of money, being that you can coordinate a team to make your voices heard and anything you try to say will ultimately just be drowned out by shitposting. Reddit, maybe where you can have your people upvote your own posts, but on chans, you're just pissing into the ocean

This game is trying to capture the TF2 audience and plays very similarly but with a more melee and skill focused gameplay instead of shootan.

If you want multiplayer for friends, I'd go with E.Y.E. on sale it's a out 3 bucks 10 when it's not. Singleplayer go with xcom. There are the three older games and the two newer ones, they have a differing degree of difficulty. Fifteen bucks for all three old ones and 8 bucks on sale for the new ones.

Now this is assuming you are getting overwatch on pc. If you arent, then you probably should kill yourself. You are spending sixty bucks to buy the game, assuming you are a burger. Now you get eye and the three old xcom, that will leave you with 35 dollars to spend. Now assuming you didn't get jet set radio for free, it will be 5 dollars, leaving you at 30 to buy something recent that you had your eye on. If you need more games with the 30 dollars to recommend I can.

as it was in the beta? its fun but its not a must play by any mean, probably the most fun AAA shooter whatever that means to you. but to really be a 'must play' they have to improve their map design

Also on eye, it's assuming you are only playing with friends, as the online isn't as active as other games. Though even if you can't get your friends to play it, you still got the singleplayer to go through.

It's a good game but I always had issues on that front. A lot of people are scared away by the (lack of) tutorial, so I only know a couple of people who played the game to any significant degree.

It's 40 dollary doos actually, 60 for CE which just gives you some dumb skins.

90% of the time play of the game was a Bastion hiding in a corner who gibbed like 4-5 people.

Getting past the first gate is easier in Anubis when you actually play mobile characters like Genji and D.Va. I know it's a shitty excuse, but you're team also might be horrible and making the experience on that map so samey. I've seen tons of people just not even try to move past the first gate

ive found mei reliable when getting past that dumb first choke point. aside from her ridiculous blizzdrone ult she can smuggle a few players past the death gate with an ice wall, and if they arent stupid theyll be forced to abandon that platform overlooking it soon enough. after you do that the first point is usually a cinch

Tickrate doesn't matter too much until you start getting that fucking low, then it gets to be a real problem.

In a nutshell, tickrate is how often (per second) the server communicates with all players in the game, updating them all on where everyone is.
Pic is a very low tickrate (10). Among other problems, you can get shot from a location where you were out of sight due to how the interpolation works. The higher a server's tickrate, the smaller the effects of this are.

Cheap servers

There really is no ideal number, even with games that have a higher tickrate. You generally want tickrate to be as high as possible.
For example, CS:GO runs at 64 tick on the official valve servers and some people complain about that being too low whereas private CS:GO servers usually run at 128 tick.

Imagine you're already taking cover and the hitscan shot only registers after you're under that cover and you're killed.
Or even worse yet, you shoot first but but the game shooting you still manages to put you down after you're killed.

Those are the consequences of a low tickrate, BF4 had a 15HZ tickrate why so many people complained even after 30HZ people complained so they bumped it to 60HZ.
Even Cowadoody has a bigger tickrate of 32.

Higher tickrate = more updates being sent = higher cost.
So yeah, low tickrate is cheaper.

Also, I may not have been clear on this, but you won't really SEE the other players like that; that picture is demonstrating what locations your client is being told the other player is at. Your client interpolates their displayed position from the server's updates to make it look much smoother, but this is what causes you to be able to shoot people who were out of sight from their perspective.

all CODs suffer lag kills and jack-in-the-box setups. It's not going to get fixed, either. You're better off on PC, running your own private server games if that's what you want to avoid.

Most of them, like say The Division, are just samey brown trash to me. The constant repetitive missions and forced dramatic storylines give me the same feeling I get from playing a horrible freemium phone game. Overwatch is something different for me and I genuinely find most of the cast enjoyable from both a gameplay and story perspective. The art is appealing as well.

I believe they mentioned it somewhere that they're looking into upping the tickrate. And though I see why people hate the little jew, I think Jeff "Tigole" Kaplan leading the development definitely assures a flow of content for the game. Whether or not it's good is completely up in the air though.

I don't think that story is necessarily related to Overwatch, but it's basically a cautionary tale about what happens when you cater to a very small part of your community in detriment of everyone else. That minority will hardly ever be happy no matter how much effort you put into it and you just drive away the rest of the userbase and condem the entire product you're trying to sell.

You can see examples of this in regular servers for just about any games. If the admins allow That Guy to play there, he'll complain about everything and anyone, people will leave and the server dies with That Guy quiting shortly after because "nobody plays here, it's boring".

Blizzard's pattern is to stick to their pattents for a very long time. From Diablo to Warcraft and Starcraft, they just don't let them die. Overwatch can easily expect some considerable support for many many months. It's perfectly realistic to expect the game to last at the very least one year. Paying 40 bucks to play a game for a whole year is actually a very sweet deal.

There was a competitive team that runned 2 Zenyattas and was going 71-10 games or so, apparently it's a good team composition. But I've also heard that Lucio was basically top tier and Mercy was ignored by everyone… I wanted to do some number crunching with their healing for comparison.

You go outside and there's water and puddles everywhere. That's empirical evidence that it rained and you can be 100% sure of it.

I've certainly not liked the way they handled Diablo 3 with the RMAH or the way they handle Starcraft 2. But I've heard they do a neat job with Hearthstone and I've personnaly tried and liked the work they did with HotS. So while I have empirical evidence that they fucked up in the past and are likely to fuck up again in the future, I can't say 100% sure that they will fuck up in the future because I'm not an arrogant little shit like you. What I can do is play the open beta and see for myself if I like the game or not.

When Zenyatta's orbs didn't return putting a discord orb on someone let you know where they were until they died or you switched it to someone else. All it took was tagging a genji or a tracer once as they left spawn and they had to just sit and wait for you to be kind enough to tag someone else so they could go back to attempting to flank.

Also, I've checked a wiki and I think I've got the numbers down. How the fuck is Mercy the underdog of supports?

Mercy heals 50 HP per second.
Lucio heals 12.5 HP per second, so he reaches 50 HP with 4 people around him (leaving only one roamer) and Mercy's self heal is better for a Support role.
Zenyatta heals 30 HP per second but requires direct line of sight and proximity, for a very squishy hero that can't even self heal.

Mercy's damage boost is only 25% unlike the 50% of Zenyatta, but you can safely use it from cover without exposing yourself, while Zenyatta has to take a bullet from a Widowmaker if he wants to teabag someone.
And Lucio requires the entire team to stick near him for the healing to make up for it, which is a liability in itself. I get that the speed boost is pretty nice but it's not THAT crucial in most maps anyway.

Mercy should be the top tier supporter here. It's safer, more reliable and clearly focused on that specific task with little to no gimmicks and excelent survivability. What am I missing?

Mercy has to be right up on people's asses to heal them which results in often also being right up close to enemies. Mercy also has to choose between healing and damage boosting while Zenyatta does both at the same time, and on top of being just a bigger damage increase it works for all sources of damage the target takes and is a great visual guide to get people focusing down targets.

It really just comes down to that she isn't flexible. She's shackled to one person at a time and has to choose between defense and offense while Zenyatta and Lucio both get to do both at once and can support more people much easier.

Lucio has the same amount of health Mercy has and Zenyatta has even less and can't even self heal. And considering how Mei is an excelent counter to Mobility, Lucio seems like he'd have a lot more problems with her.

Embed related has a nice example of this, last point in Hanamura. There's an Hanzo up in a ledge and another character in that balcony with everyone else on the ground. She can just fly around everytime something comes near her and avoid being killed while baiting everyone else.
The only time she dies in that video is when she takes the tunnel and overextends and even then it was a second way from flying up.

Lucio has less problems with Mei because he can fairly easily bounce her away and switch to speed aura to backpedal. Mercy has to have a teammate in range, in vision, but far enough away from Mei to fly to and she flies in a straight line which makes her easy to hit with icicles. The problem with her is she's a support who's reliant on other players to support her in supporting them while the other two can handle themselves somewhat if need be.

Speaking from my massive experience with the Quick Fix in TF2, that's a shitty way to play Mercy.
Since there's no Overheal, you're more effective rotating people around and providing damage when they are topped off. You can easily heal people faster than any of the other characters as long as you don't "pocket" someone. Lucio can only beat Mercy's healing if everyone clumps around him anyway.

But I guess I understand the point though. She's very specialized for that role, while both Zeny and Lucio can also provide some assistance in other fields.
I'd imagine that it's up to a team's personnal preferences. If they can clearly separate roles and don't require the extra damage, Mercy would be a better choice, possibly even for Payload maps or Defense. But if a team tries to stick together or goes more tanky and needs the extra damage, it would have to pick either of the others. That's actually pretty cool…

It's relative shackling, obviously you don't just sit on one person the whole game but while you're healing each person up you can't really do anything else and it leads to you being basically fucked in most equal number encounters since the healing she provides isn't more useful than the damage she doesn't.

The issue is that the teammates have to switch to focusing the Mei, or whoever is trying to kill the Mercy, because Mercy can't handle herself. Lucio won't necessarily kill a single person attacking him but he can pretty reliably avoid them. Zenyatta has a good chance of killing someone but won't be avoiding them. Mercy has to just keep healing/buffing her teammates and trust them to be able to handle whoever they're fighting as well as whoever is trying to kill her because her gun is weak and her escape is weak. She's a support who is marginally better under ideal situations and significantly worse under non-ideal ones and at least in pubs its the nature of the game that you run into non-ideal ones way more than ideal ones.

I'd like to believe that's true and it most definitely is for competitive or premade teams.
For for regular games, you're lucky if your team is even aware you are nearby, so you can't really relly on that.
Still, one thing I did notice in the Beta was that a few people were starting to realize just how important teamwork really is. I did saw a few falling back and waiting for rest or even looking around and waiting for an opening or distraction before going in. This coming from TF2 where everyone just jumps into the fray as fast as possible (which can be kinda fun, actually) is quite interesting.

Perhaps much like Bastion, eventually people will learn how to play with a Mercy on their team. They'll know she is nearby and whenever they see her in the distance, they'll position themselves so she can fly up to them. I'd very much like for the stupid fuckers to at least go near the borders of balconies so I can target them and heal their ass. How hard can it be to look down and see a Mercy that wants to heal you? Only 2 characters make the heel walking sound anyway.

There's literally nothing stopping them from including modes for 8v8, 10v10 or 12v12, except perhaps having to redraw some of the HUD.

There's health regen for Mercy once she is out of combat for 2 seconds, much like your traditional health regen in CoD.
However that's an exception to the rule given to her for the sake of keeping the support alive, much like the Medic in TF2.

There's also Shields, a portion of your HP that do regenerate with time. Not all heroes have Shields and they have them in different amounts but unlike regular health regeneration, the use of shields drastically change how some heroes can play the game when fighting against others. Like Zarya using her shields to absorb some of the initial pokes so she doesn't have to pop her barrier too soon.

I'm only mentioning this because I know some tard is gonna pick those 2 cases and argue that every single hero has health regen, much like they say every single hero has aim assist for every gun and ability just because Soldier 76 has it on his ulti.

if you have a mercy teammate, and theres a situation where shes in danger, you need to get really aggressive, because if she doesnt die youre going to be back to full health in a few seconds. a flanking mei can be hell if it happens at the right time, but that has more to do with mei than it does with mercy and it doesnt take as much to 'shake her off' as people like to make it out to be.

speaking of inattentive randoms and mercy, reinhardt on the team seems to have given mercy players an easier time since his role is pretty easy to grasp and she can actually get into the danger zone and use her short range heals where theyre needed. it can end up being very difficult for a single player to take her out because in addition to the safe space, just having the reinhardt on the team seems to put people on alert for some reason.
crits would allow people to get away with it once in a while, and it was always interesting when it worked. sure, the inpredictability has given many undeserved victories, but in the end i think it ends up being more memorable.

The problem with Rein is that his damage is either melee or the fire bolt he casts. You can't heal his barrier and he's not gonna take that much damage because of it and buffing his damage means almost nothing because nobody is gonna come near him, at least not from the front so it's not a very good defense for Mercy anyway.
I've kept with some of them due to "pocket Heavy" syndrome, but I've found out that they can survive alone easily and you're more usefull jumping with other people. Besides they take ages to heal up… Which is actually a bonus to charge your ulti now that I think about it…

About 6v6 I just remenbered something…
There was a thread about TF2 here a few days ago where some guy was talking about how he only cared about his kill\death ratio because it was the only objective measure of his skill. That he still tried to go for objectives but he didn't care for them or for teamwork because neither of those can be quantified in an objective manner or improved as much as getting better aim. And that since you're hardly ever gonna play with the same guys again and autobalance keeps changing teams around, there's no reason to worry about a "team".

While I still think the guy is acting a bit like a selfish prick and you should play in a team, regardless of what "team" actually is, he does have a point.
It's hard to be invested in helping a team when people can come in and drop out of the game midmatch at any time and completely change the amount and quality of players on both sides. You can end a match with a team that barely resembles what it was in the beginning. And this isn't even taking into account autobalance or how voice communication is impossible with 12 people on the same team.

So I looked at the 6v6 model in Overwatch and it worked for ASSFAGGOTS. That you're "stuck" with the rest of your team until your match is over and those are constants that don't change during the game. 12v12 is for retarded casual fun that I love. But 6v6 with a round based structure seems to be a much better model for favoring teamwork and playing together instead of just everyone picking Reaper and being edgy.

I was more echoing what most people say about Kaplan, but personally I think it was both. Having to endure a boring leveling experience only to end up with nothing to do at end game except unbalanced pvp and a few raids turned the game into a boring pile of trash.

Considering how the levelcap reached 100 and there's pretty much nowhere else to expand the world, it kinda looks like they are trying to kill the game. I hear snippets of the story from fans and it seems it's also coming to an end. Something something space abominations and some orc going into space to fight them across time or something.

I mean, the movie itself could be actually to probe the market. If it gets a lot of revenue, then there's still interest in the IP, if there isn't, it's dead and they drop it. A neat way to gauge if it's worth the money to keep investing in it by making garanteed money on the side. Makes sense from a business perspective.

Anyway, if they do end up killing the game and development for it, perhaps at least free servers like Nostalrius will be allowed to flourish again and Vanilla will come back. Which is ironic; the only way WoW can be saved is for Blizzard to bury it so someone can exhume it.

No, a beta is any unfinished state of development. Betas can be really close to finish, and have very minor bugs, or they can have a crazy amount of bugs and be nowhere near done. Gee, I'm shocked that when they release a public beta to see how well the game works live, it's mostly complete. Every Early Access title is in beta, and that's why you can find some that are well polished and some that suck major ass.

However, not all betas out there are inherently bad or flawed. If the Dev puts one out for free to see what the community thinks of it and change the game accordingly, that means he is putting quality and customer satisfcation as a priority.
Overwatch specifically suffered a whole bunch of changes during the closed beta based on feedback from the plaeyrs that tried it. Many heroes were severely reworked to reflect that.

You also gotta compare what Overwatch did with your average Early Acess crap. Instead of asking for you money to beta test their buggy software so your buyer's remorse kicks in when it's finnaly done, they gave us a beta to try out the game at no expense for us. And the content at launch is precisely what was available during the open beta since it's less than a week apart. There's very little they can change in that period of time.

I don't think that was ever the point of the argument, it was one user saying modern betas are not really betas at all since the term has been redefined, and another user saying that whatever that is not released is a 'beta' which clearly shows he doesn't even understand the stages of development.

That match was legitimately fun. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of my deaths so far feel like the kind of deaths where you sit back and say "Really?" immediately after. I couldn't put my finger on exactly why, but I think it's a combination of low time to kill and my situational awareness having atrophied a bit.

I get that beta is a stage in development where you aren't sure this is the final product, it still requires heaps of testing and most likely bugfixing. But the way these games usually go, you'll still see patches even if just for content with time. Traditional stages of development don't really apply since the games are contantly in development. Heroes are re-tweaked or created and added, as are maps. I mean, TF2 receives updates all the time that not only add content but also fix some of the issues in the game. Does that mean TF2 is still in beta?

Comebacks are really cool since it usually means you're playing against equally skilled players and those matches are the best. They aren't frustraingly hard but they aren't boringly easy either.
One thing you probably should start doing is looking around for your teammates. I'm sure you'll notice that many of the times you died, you saw a bunch of skulls in front of you, meaning you went in alone. Happened to me a lot until I learned to step back and wait for the rest of my team.

You get more experience points if you get commended, but it doesn't stack. So you'll receive the same bonus at 1 commendation as at 10.

One thing I really dislike about the game is how weak the classes feel. Yeah, it's a team game, but you're forced to play as a team instead of it being an available option. You don't always have the option to play with friends, and they don't always want to be organized.

Playing alone feels like you're playing without your balls. While TF2 was casualized compared to previous games, you still had agency. If you were smart enough you could kill upwards of 5 people in a short timespan, like with a well placed demo trap or sneaking around as a heavy. In Overwatch your sticky trap would be glowing red through walls, with a deploy time of 5 to 10 seconds after the demoman is done yelling over the whole map about explosives or something.

i'm slightly naive to them and only get word of mouth, because overwatch is the only blizzard game i've ever taken interest in, and the only other blizz game i ever played was a console version of diablo 3 at a friends house that i literally fell asleep while playing

You hear the voiceline for ultis anywhere on the map, it's unrelated to the heroes position so it doesn't give it away and you still get the warning.
You hear the other team louder because there's not much interest in hearing yours as much. There's no friendly fire and they most likely are standing near you anyway, you don't need to dodge them, just be aware of them.
There's also some other neat differences like, if it's an enemy he shouts in his native language, if it's a teammate, it's in english. That's why Hanzo has both "Let the Dragons consume you" and "Weeaboo onii-chan!"

It's easy to tell who didn't play the game for very long or at all when their theorycraft is on the same level as those that think Bastion is OP.

A Junkrat can easily kill an entire team with his Ulti. Does that happen often? No. It requires severe knowledge of the map and a proper ambush to use efficiently. Otherwise, someone will shoot your tire and you'll kill no one.
The same can be said about pretty much any Ulti. Pharah, Genji, Soldier, Reaper and McCree become major targets, Hanzo's can simply be dodged, Tracer needs to get extremely close, etc etc.

This whole "press Q to win" is a nice meme, but I seriously prefer "git gud" if you don't mind.
