Something I've noticed happen a lot is that I will lose something important to me, like a water bottle or a necklace, and I will look everywhere for it.

The problem is that memory is not actually all that good. We remember impressions, we remember sensory data and feelings. We don't actually remember events.

Many islands in the Western Pacific were visible at that scale. Russia had many northern islands but most of them were much much smaller and closer to the mainland than that map.

There was no majority Muslim country in subsaharan Africa other than Sudan (that was much smaller and confined to its southwesternmost reaches) and a much much more secular Somalia. Ethiopia and Eritrea were 85+% Christian and Somalia had a significant majority of Christians. Nigeria was about 50/50 Christian/Muslim with Christians most likely being the plurality.
