The entire point is that Garry's Mod is a sandbox game revolving around the sheer capability of the Source engine, you can develop anything you damn well please if you know how to program and use it as an addon (ranging from things like ports of weapons from other games to entire adventure maps) or a popular one for building is Wiremod which allows you to also construct anything you damn well please.

That most players are unimaginative twelve-year-olds nowadays is the fault of Youtubers and the game gaining popularity as a result. Most servers are impossibly full of children now and it's hard as fuck to find a single good server anymore, and I remember when the Gmod threads first rolled around they'd still get swarmed with children because the owners were too lazy or unwilling to put a password on it.

The source engine is outdated, all it did special was scripts and physics. It could be made much better if Source 2 allowed much larger maps, I think that's always been the primary problem. Garry's Mod itself is simply an unlimited tech demo for the source engine.

Which doesn't conflict at all with anything I said, Source is hellishly capable if you know what to do with it and Wiremod alone is an excellent example.

Source 2, we'll see what we see when it's available for use. Source is still a pretty impressive piece of hardware even by today's standards in terms of capability, hell I learned a few days ago that Demoman's grenades in TF2 have their trajectory and distance traveled affected by simulated air-resistance/drag, so different models for the bombs or different ways of the bomb traveling (stock grenades tumble through the air while Loch n' Load ones stay still) affect how far or long they stay in the air.

You guys could try modding darkRP for some zombie survival RP shit.

Related, Eastcoast got a v4 a few days ago. The "new street" has gotten a few more enterable buildings (2 from v3b) including a bar, there's quite a ghetto-y look for that street too while I'm at it, and the church has also gotten a bit of a change, taking the place of basketball court. The garage next to PD is gone, and only has the elevator to sewer area (v3b). The two storefronts opposite of PD have had their layout changed to a more "skeleton-safe" one. The sewers (not subway part) have had a massive layout change and are smaller than ever, putting more emphasis on the ground level stuff. The warehouse which lets you go to sewers, has also been mirrored and rotated. The rest seem to be the same from v3.

Wiremod is based on high level scripts, which I said source handles well.

Projectile motion, while impressive when source was first used, isn't a major feat anymore. It's a simple application of mathematics that newer hardware makes a trivial accomplishment. Just curious, have you worked with programming before, primarily with game engines or simulations?

What other good rp maps do you know of? I only really know rp_downtown, I thought that was always the classic map. I usually node them for use with NPCs in single player.

What started out with the usual "great wide open" dreaming Holla Forums has ended up being another boring, grinding RP server but with skeleton assrape for half the time cycle. Instead of keeping the idea of a lot of different faction groups to get into, it turned into another shitty meme skeleton vs. slav mob incident.

What it needs is a server backing that isn't shit, a map that isn't small nor a labyrinth to deal with, and it needs to keep the small yet fun things like multiple stupid groups and gangs to get into. Nazis, skeletons, hobos, hell even a group that is nothing but office workers assaulting people with discarded CRTs would be fun. It's when you start taking shit like the noodle shop guy serious that the downfall happens.

amsterville was pretty good

It failed due to various reasons man. I say we have it up one week outta the month. We find what we like, we make what we like then once we all get bored we take it down in the latest state it was at. Then we can have monthly threads like this instead of generals and make it work a bit better. This means you can make something new, or change existing crap.

Have you all tried one of those WW2 or half life roleplays? That might make for different game, with a group in total control, resistance groups, and people just trying to survive.

Locality is a nice one. Small, but nice. It's surprisingly vertical. As said, Amsterville is also good, but VERY resource intensive. Bangclaw has a MASSIVE underground area, and is overall decent. Retribution is large, but seems sterile as fuck. gm_chaparral is a large and nice looking desert map with over half of the buildings enterable, but needs content from workshop, and L4D2. Is also heavy on the framerate around the town area. Oskutin has many forest-type roleplay/sandbox maps on the workshop. Rockford is similar to Retribution, a large map, but aesthetically more pleasing to look at. Forget about Evocity, that thing seems good on paper, but in the end it isn't that good, also has a crash-cave.

Also, the "new" Uptown looks pleasant.

rp_c18_v1 is good. It's basically 1/3rd plaza district, 1/3rd slums, 1/3rd police citadel.

CSS and HL2 are heavily advised

Thinking about whether we would have any use for a clipping tool, either visual or physical. And it does exactly what you think it does. It cuts the model on a defined plane. Physclipped props will be automatically unbreakable, but if the clip is undone, the unbreakability will go away.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it would be pretty cool to have a game like it where you split the players into two groups, Dorks and Suckers. Dorks gain points by scamming Suckers and buying Jawbreakers, Suckers gaining points by beating the Dorks scams, team with the most points at the end wins.

But it's average idea guy development team general.

problem is how would you even begin to make something like that in terms of mechanics

it can't be actual scamming because any player who gets put into the "suckers" group will immediately know whats up and not to trust anybody

only way i can think of is to turn it into a more generic objective based gamemode where most of the "scams" are already pre-written and pre-coded and the players just have to do some arbitrary objectives to decide which side wins or loses. And frankly, that idea just bores me to tears

I was thinking of "forcing" the Suckers to participate in Scams as it was the only way for them to "score" / get ahead. Kinda like how we had the whole idea for DarkRP that only mob bosses were allowed to wield printers so that any illegal activity had to go through them first and foremost - thus making the class actually important and attractive to play.

At least on a theoretical basis. And yep, biggest issue is making the scams fun to pull off and incentivize players to participate in them. One could argue for a Mafia style-approach to scam making, but I'm willing to bet that will only invite cancer.

true, and if the scams have to be freeform and made up by the scammer then we'll probably just see large amounts of autism since most people are terrible at scamming from what I've seen

and the problem with the mafia on big comfy (and in most darkrp servers) was that the boss was fun to play but being a goon was a drag and one of the shittiest classes in the game so you'd frequently see a lone boss running around with no gang to back him up. That extended onto nobody really using printers since y'know, with no gang your basically a sitting duck for any police/niggers/raiders that want to have a go at you

Ayup. We needed to make Goons more viable / attractive but I am still drawing blanks on what we could of done with them outside of giving them better models really. I mean, you could of done the whole kidnap thing but it would of mostly been a carbon copy of the police. Even if I absolutely loved dragging some bitch across town in cuffs, it would feel cheap to just put it on the gangsters as well.

yeah, i was thinking maybe give them buyable unique shit like lockpicks, grappling hooks etc and they get a pay bonus for staying in relative close proximity to the boss (or a pay bonus based on how long the boss has been active without being killed or arrested)
