Capeshit is bad because it focuses on a single badly written usually mary sue character with very little pretense of stakes. The hero will never die, he may struggle against a one off enemy(or a pathetically bad recurring one) or he may lose his loved ones but for all intents and purposes he is immortal to the point of straight up getting back from the dead. That and the horrible quality and inconsistency of art in many comics.
Death and Return of Super Man is a perfect example of this where the writer kills off a character, introduces multiple poorly fleshed out ones only for them to go away.

Its a never ending cycle with no pay off. The over arching characters never change or stop, they only get abandoned. When fucking Naruto has more closure than your shit running for almost a century your whole genre has a problem.

There are a few non capeshit comics in west available and they are leagues ahead of any super hero shit simply by the virtue of being original or different.

At that point you are so far removed from the source material that adding capeshit stuff to it actually detracts from it. One of the biggest reason why marvel stuff is getting huge as movies is simply the guarantee of a closure and only 2 hours of investment. You don't have to wait weeks or months for a new issue of the comic only to be disappointed with another cliff hanger. This is why in a decade or so the whole MCU bullshit in movies will dry out too.

So let me get this straight. Do you really think they'd do anything with that property other than a shitty Max Payne/Hitman rip on a shoestring budget? That's what you're asking for? You're a moron if you do.

Accept some truth:
- If it isn't Bat or Spider-related, you're not getting a budget allocation sufficient for the project. Exceptions being Deadpool and that DC fighter made by the MK team that went F2P iirc
- If not Bat/Spider related, it will be relegated around a movie release, which guarantees it's forgettable shovelware shit (Remember the Iron Man games? The Hulk games? X-Men? Yeah, neither does anyone else)
- If it's a Superman game, it's guaranteed to fucking suck bar none. Because you CANNOT design good gameplay around a hero whose power is being fucking invincible & unstoppable. Unless you're a masochist into "do x before time runs out" a la Superman 64
- If the designers aren't Lego game devs, hang it up cause you're not getting any good mileage out of the concept.

He's the kind of guy you can punch or shoot a big laser at and itll knock him down or tire him out, sure its hard to kill him unless you've got the green stuff or the red stuff but the deal with superman isn't that you have to kill him, the deal is you have to SURVIVE him. The fact he's nigh impossible to kill is pretty meaningless, so is the dude in dark souls or borderlands, the challenge is in not getting frozen, burned, smashed or tech-gadgeted to prison and/or hell depending on how bad you are. Usually its prison, but supes isn't a "no kill" fag like bats, just a "barely ever kill" person like spiderman.

A superman game with a health bar wouldn't be wrong or bad. You could just make it so that only big enemies/attacks actually lower the bar and weaker foes are only there to do objectives (attack civilians, steal shit, operate gadgets that can hurt you) plus you could include some ACTUAL SUPERHEROING like rescuing people from a burning building or helping out during an earthquake, not just the constant "SUPERVILLAINS ONLY" shit games push.

Someone argued the superhero clause already (tension gone because you know the hero won't die). You're using that to gloss over and play down two critical factors:

Setting up mechanics that don't feel out of place around Superman's nigh-invulnerability.

Setting up a progressive narrative on the story so that the player can immerse themselves into Superman's role.

Contrast with other like heroes. Deadpool is unkillable, but he's a nigh unkillable assassin and gun for hire. There's a thousand and one directions to take his game that won't feel out of place or retarded. You can do the action, the kung-fu, and, most-importantly, the meta humor that blends in with said action.

Spider-Man is killable but he's strong as fuck. He's also constantly trying to balance his superhero life against his shitty life, and the two always cross. Spider-Man 2 made combat fun, made the webslinging absolutely god-like in feel, and gave you a fuckhuge map to do small, middle, and big time combat in.

Even Arkham Asylum hit all the notes that put you into the role of the Batman (combat argumentively standing).

But those guys have obvious limits and down-to-earth gimmicks, so to speak. Compare those attempts to the likes of Superman and you're going to have problems. A boring power set with no real limit (invincible even if the sun is down unless you have green rocks). How does that translate into good gameplay? Will you be able to destroy buildings? Are they going to put laughable meters in place? Meters that run out? On a man whose power is "I fucking win as long as the sun doesn't go nova"? That alone is a HUGE problem for a would-be developer. How the fuck do you craft a believable lose state for Superman?

And don't give me the current Superman bullshit, because it won't fly. There's not an exec at Warner right now with the balls to run with the supposedly lesser-powered Superman (and the "supposed" remark is full-on skeptical). A lunar eclipse could happen and they could go with a current build Superman and you'd STILL run into the problem of defining a proper lose state for the game that doesn't drag on or get boring (even the soft lose shit of die & restart at a checkpoint wouldn't fly).

Superman as a vidya has too many fundamental flaws to consider a fun game, outside of masochistic speed/escort runs.

Comics have been fucked since the 1950s, with the Comics Code. And it was mostly liberals who brought them back, or at least brought them as close to back as they could get, in the late '50s and early '60s. You have some like Ditko or Miller who are right wing, but others like Kirby or… well most of the rest really, who are very left wing. That's not the issue. Miller and Kirby both have great comics and less great comics despite being pretty far apart politically.

The issue is SJWs being the current trend in society, and comics are such a niche audience that they just fumble around for whatever they think can get them attention. SJWs are just the new XTREEM shit like what we saw in the '90s.

And comics are niche because the comics code censored them to hell and back and made superhero shit practically the only allowed genre. The comics code essentially being a '50s version of SJWism. But at the time they weren't considered particularly left wing. It's just that SJWs are regressive puritans who just happened to end up on the left side of the table, despite not being particularly liberal.

Superman has several endings. Just each one is an "imaginary story" where the canon stories go through an alternate timeline where that one last story never happened. The original Death of Superman from the '60s was written by creator Jerry Seigel. Other comics continued but you can just read that and consider it the end of the "real" stories. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow is the "last" story of the original Superman continuity, and in other comics it went through a semi-reboot, but just don't read those if you don't want to.

Also, the original Superman from Action Comics #1 died in 2006. He got killed by an angry fanboy from the real world. He came back as a zombie briefly a few years later, but that was just a single story, and the zombies were defeated. He's dead. The original Superman is officially dead.

Other guys die, and if they happen to come back later under a different writer, oh well, don't read that shit. Flash was dead for 25 years. If you want, just ignore the stuff from after he came back. Some of it's good, some not, but there was an ending. They just made a sequel later.

I think it's more possible to deal with his invulnerability, because as you said, only casuals think he's actually invincible. The trick is flying. It's hard to make it not feel like bullshit when Superman can't fly around the entire earth, or maybe to other planets or at least the moon. I mean you could put Metropolis and maybe other locations in a Brainiac bottle, but that only works for one game.

Except, you know, all his villains. He's stronger than a lot of other guys on the Justice League, but he has his own roster of villains who beat him up all the time. And then there are Justice League villains, who are almost all stronger than Superman and the rest of the league put together, and the more universal villains that they use for the really gigantic crossovers.

You'd have better luck looking for sets of the entire series and only downloading what you want. It's not hard to find paper reprints, so I'm sure downloads aren't too hard.

Just have villains who are as strong as Superman. The real problem is that they're mostly only appropriate as bosses. You'd be a bit short on regular mooks. You could use Parademons or Brainiac Probes or plain old robots made by whoever, though. So no, this isn't an issue. Superman isn't invincible. He's invincible compared to normal guys, then supervillains come and fuck his shit up. It's worked this way in like at least one new comic a week for the last 75 years.

The answer for Superman vidya is really fucking simple. You don't set it on Earth, but on a distant alien planet, Apokalypse during a big civil war or something.

You get to play around with Superman's insane powerset in a big open world free of the consequences wanton destruction would wreak upon the city he's normally charged with protecting.

Since it's WB, I'm imagining they'll take after the animated version of Superman, who by far seems the most balanced in terms of raw power. Animated Superman gets punched, shot, and knocked around all over the place and actually manages to get hurt in the process.

You can limit his powerset by having him get blasted by some weird alien tech that saps some of his superjuice away if you really need to go the Metroid route for progression, even.

Really the only thing that's not Red Kryptonite that's particularly crazy is how Superman used to be able to just fly back and forth through time. But I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened since the '60s, and definitely not since the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

There are already multiple universes based on each of those alt-company universes. Like all the Charlton characters exist on Earth-0 but also Earth-4 is still a Charlton earth more like the pre-crisis Charlton universe. Captain Marvel exists on Earth-0, but Earth-5 or something is still the Fawcett universe. It's been that way since Infinite Crisis.
