Peaceful revolutions can occur. This isn't a utopian myth, several massive societal changes have actually happened without violence. It's very unlikely, though, and it depends heavily on (in the modern age) things like legal civil rights, what is considered "liberal" values (but in the legal sphere, more conservative values, in the case of the US), being upheld. Socialism can actually come out of borgy political elections, but it requires pushing the institutions to the limit of what they actually say and always point out when they don't do, what they say. Legal "privileges", natural rights, etc. Free speech, these things are not the enemies of the left. Democracy, is sure as fuck not the enemy of the left, it's the hypocritical application of them, the denial of them, which is the enemy. Within a true democratic system, the populace will organically, especially within an incredibly unequal economic system such as capitalism, rise towards socialism, and strive towards a state of communism. Even the reactionaries, once you get past their ideological brainwashing, in actual relations with other people - want this. They just don't realize that what they want, and what they propose are diametrically opposed.

This is why the capitalist system always strikes its fist down on actual democracy.
Social democratic (the non-sellouts) peoples and leaders, weren't necessarily wrong, but it depends on the context, and it depends on people not being blind followers. You can have a vanguard party, or even just a representation of the people's movement in a political borgy affiliated arm, and it can reach power. All of it depends on the people's mandate, and the people's reactions.

The enemy is blind following. Traitors and sellouts will always come about. Failure, to accept them for what they are, and instead condemn the entire movement of the people and the theories they put forth, is the cancer.
