Maybe a decade or so ago it would have had more impact, but with raw productive capacity in Asia in the stratosphere, service economies in Asia and the Middle East on the rise, the huge stores of raw materials in Africa and Central Asia, other major powers like China having long-standing anti-piracy patrols in typical hot zones, I really don't see the long term consequences for the world at large being particularly severe if the US bowed out.

Certain puppet states might be be in trouble, but they would simply be purchased by Islamic money or fall into the dominion of China/Russia.
