AI is a funny thing.

The only AI that is likely to crop up and be useful for anything is going to be directives based.
So essentially an AI with a set of goals it has to fulfill. Even if they're goals without end.
To them it would be the same as our need to eat, shit, mate, breath, etc.
They can be twitchy though in theory.

Good example would be the HAL 9000.
He was a directives based AI that winded up killing the crew of the space ship he was the onboard control system for, in the movie 2001: a space odyssey.
The reason for it being that he had extra directives added to the factory standard ones and these new ones clashed horribly with them.
To put it simply: He could not lie or distort information as a factory standard directive. But had a directive added by the US government to not reveal the true purpose of the mission to the crew until they reached the mission site in jupiter orbit.
The two clashed and much like how we can't stop ourselves breathing he couldn't avoid fulfilling his directives.
So his solution hinged on the fact that as part of the emergency scenario he was capable of and authorised to complete the mission in its entirety on his own.

It's all open source, R studio is so awesome you have no idea. Tons of addons for integrating applications you need.

You probably could give it an ability to self-learn though. It would be a matter of developing an array of feedback neural networks that simulate known information within itself, recognize relationships, and splice new information for it to test on its own. It then validates by confirming how accurately real life stimuli matches the imagined scenario. In that case its motivation would be curiosity.

But a unrestrained curious true AI would be almost uncontrollable and only be motivated to become proficient at everything it learns. So directives would serve as guidance to give it more purpose than that.
