Just buy a New3DSXL user. It's worth it for Monster Hunter alone if you enjoy the game a lot, and if you really want to experience all the games on the system, you can get MH3U, MH4U and the upcoming MHG.
The online play is also great, with lower rank pub games having a chaotic charm to them with people of many different skill levels while G-rank is generally full of people who know what they're doing.

In fact, I made a german hunting friend who didn't speak a lick of english. We went from HR3 all the way to HR7 in one sitting, then later on I found him in G rank 3 after not seeing him for a month while I was G rank 1 myself. 2DS is a good option as far as I've heard, as long as you don't mind the lack of a 'sleep' function by folding (I think they have a button for that though), and only one speaker. But the 3DS's sound quality has neve been that great so I don't believe anything is really lost

Weapon attacks used to be controlled with the analog stick, while cameras can only be controlled with the shoulder buttons.

The PSP fixed some of the problems but only had one analog.

Then it came out on the 3DS which helped a bit, but still had the same fucking problems.
Then it came out on the Wii and Wii U both with stupid fucking controls, the only useful thing being the items loadout on the controller.

The 3DS lacking a second analog stick is what made me withhold from buying Monster Hunter in the first place as I tried a friend's 3DS with the infamous claw grip, but with my index finger on the analog stick and thumb on the D-pad. I was quite used to using the claw grip due to my experience playing MH3rd on the PSP.

Needless to say, it was fucking horrible. I read online that MH3rd on the PSP wasn't released in the west because Sony refused to localize it for Capcom, and thus it never came to be. That's one big reason why MH3U and MH4U jumped over onto the 3DS, despite the original PSVita being miles better than the old 3DS at the time and it was because Nintendo offered to localize it for Capcom.

I will never forgive Sony for fucking up with the PSVita. They could've had an amazing console and it would've been a real contender for the 3DS in Japan at the very least, but they fucked up. Due to Monster Hunter's popularity in Japan, sales of the 3DS skyrocketed in the japanese market.

Now I know nothing about the new game, but 4U did a good job making sure all of its DLC was free and on a regular schedule, there was even hearsay about them standing up to the suits who wanted them to charge for it for max kikery.

Of course I personally want to believe this but it's unfounded as far as I know.

I would be all for 4U if it wasn't anime weapons, and on a ded console.

However knowing nintendo it will slowly drift away from its roots and before you know it your fighting poorly designed pokemon and over the top psuedo-scifi weapons.

I have legitimately cried after my hand locked up after grinding in Unite over the fact I will always have to suffer with shit controls to play MH.
The closest I can get to good controls is emulating monster hunter and monster hunter dos.
Its funny with 8x alias and higher resolution the armors and game look much better then some of the games released in the last 5 years.

Monster Hunter on a N3DSXL is pretty alright. It's definitely the best in the handheld series by far, though I have cleared MHP3rd on PPSSPP using a PS3 and Wii U Pro Controller, and I was able to bind the D-pad controls onto the second analog stick.

That coupled with playing with a friend online who I finished all the content with made for an amazing experience. In fact, the only reason I even have a N3DSXL is because he bought one for me by complete surprise as well as himself to play together shortly after the New 3DS's came on the market.

Needless to say, we're still playing together and we've managed to 2 man the White & Red Fatalis, the Monster Hunter final contract you get after deciphering the glyphs etc etc.

Here are our guild cards and a couple screenshots from when we played MHP3rd together on PPSSPP. I really miss being able to take screenshots on the fly.

Of course they support it, at least on MH4U. I once had a weird glitch where my N3DS couldn't find the analog stick. Fixed with a restart.

I had this problem when playing 3U, especially the first time underwater hunting, I considered getting the grip but after a couple tries I managed to get used to the controls, especially after figuring out how to customize the second screen.

I don't have any problems anymore but I do have some camera trouble every now and then in 4U but I just run away and refocus my camera. in 3U it was a pain in the ass since pushing the up or down button on the screen thumpad switched my camera to zoom in slightly but that was fixed in 4U

It's possible, but not mandatory. The only way to play Dark Souls is to abuse i-frames. Especially 3, since they made shields weaker.

Rolling for iframes is not the only way to win, you can always dodge without rolling with a fast character, or just cover and time your stamina recovery (which can be done in DS3 too).
There are actually shieldless/roll-less runs of DS3 as of now.

The fact that most people do it this way doesn't mean it's the only way to do it.

I just go ranged for those kinds of fights. Bow is monumentally underrated in 4U. Fights take longer but they are also way fucking easier. Especially if you can pull of critical distance and power shots properly.

The only ones that fuck me up are monsters with "surprise" roars and the Blos

Bushido S&S is so much fucking fun especially with the oils now I've never really liked S&S but it's fucking fantastic in X. I can't find a Hammer setup I really like so far though.

Essentially if you hit your dodge hits a monster's attack during i-frames you get a super dodge. When you land out of it you get a few seconds of dashing with your weapon out. If you attack during the dash you do a powerful counter-attack or combo depending on what weapon you're using.

Also cross is worse than 4U, the style system while nice, ends up being a flat best style for each weapon. Like Bushido GS is near useless because you lose the level 3 swipe. In addition to no G-rank the fights never really get hard, and the idea of variants being difficult is usually "well he has a lot of HP" or in the case of the Toxic rathian "you got hit once, there goes 150 hp because the poison is so strong, hope you gemmed for it fucker"
The variant sets are also poopoo compared to frankensets and on the whole look pretty mediocre

Feel free to look up guides. Make a leather set for gathering, and give all the weapons a try. don't feel like you're locked in to one weapon either, I have a box full of dozens of each.

oh no GS is retarded strong still, just bushido GS is the weakest by far.
I have a set I used that I can literally stagger every monster in the game on every hit (level 3 charge). It's stupid as fuck. We're talking 500+ raw per hit. Even more if I turn on the hunter art that gives your next hit 100 raw. Silly high damage.
I personally don't like hunter artes. They increase some playstyles but some I just question why they exist. I also don't quite like how you build around them in striker style, literally that move set is "spam your HAs". It's just a bit more anime than I'm used to and it seems like everyone has a SUPER attack now.
But for Hunter Arts I'll give an example of how bad they vary
Hunting horn's are fucking useless on the whole and it's better to just use the generic ones like super dodge or no stagger. Orchestra soul (plays all songs at once) only effects the HH user, the double note one is only useful if you somehow are missing a ton of hits in which case you're not helping in HP pool Rank 10 variant fights, the big hit one is okay it's a slightly more damaging hit but because it trips anyone near it you don't get too many chances to use it well.
GS's are pretty strong, there's the +100 raw damage on next hit, there's a big counter swing, and there's a sword wave.
DS literally is based around them, to maximise DPS you go striker and chug drinks (or have a HH friend give you stamina null) and mash out all of your attacks and have… I think it's called Ravenous Wolf on at all times (it gives you a massive attack boost)

Oh basically the first part of the game is going to be really shitty, but if you power through you start having fun if you're into it. As I said I've never met someone who's lukewarm on MH it's a love or hate thing.

Have you fought Amatsumagatsuchi? It looked and felt just so out of place floating and "swimming" in the air, not actually flying or nothing of the sort, if just kinda work. It was really fun though.

amatsu was the first thing that felt slightly more lovecraft than dinosaur inspired to me.

MonHun is the kind of game that requires you to look up shit it explains absolutely nothing. Use Kiranico to look up where to get items for example. It's also the kind of game that starts off slow as shit especially if you're playing by yourself. You have to get a few large monster hunts under your belt before you know if the game is for you.

How did you even managed that user? I didn't read a guide either but it wasn't so hard to figure it out either, when you got 10 it lit up and got better, even more if you go more than 10, and if you got -10 it got worse, and the books on your house told you what skills did what. I mean, pretty much completing an armor set got you an activated skill.

Shit happens all the time to me on expeditions on mh4u. Which is why I avoid that mode like the e plague.

It's bad enough that there are hardly any edges in which I can jump off for jump attacks but fighting 2 monsters and being timed on it is just the limit for me. I just need to get better, but there's always a time and place for everything and getting gud is not on my schedule.

Yeah that's a very good point. At least the versus mode wasn't just two hunters fighting against each other with no other factor. In my opinion I think this versus mode seems like a fun thing to do with a friend rather than being a competitive tourney sort of thing but people nowadays might take it too seriously.

I liked it to, gobul was my favorite low level fight back in tri.
