2016 Doom and it's anti-pirate technology "Denuvo"

So the latest Doom game, released May 13th, has yet to be cracked.

The game features anti-pirate technology called "Denuvo", which is apparently the gaming industry's best attempt at stopping pirates from playing their games.

All of the Denuvo protected games eventually end up getting cracked, though, after only a few weeks.

As someone who's been pirating PC games since the late 90s and expecting release day torrents, I am surprised that the gaming industry has finally been able to deter pirates, however short-lived it may be.

Anyone want to bet that the fags at id software and Bethesda actually lose money in the end? I bet they paid a small-fortune for this Denuvo anti-crack protection, which ends up getting cracked in a couple weeks anyway.

In ten years, you won't be able to play your Denuvo games on your new CPUs because of the way the tech works. It requires constant patches for innovations in CPU tech.

Most developers abandon their games after 1-2 years, so it's up to pirates to, once again, allow you to play the games you've already bought because of the DRM breaking.

Not much will be lost due to this oversight, I'm afraid.

They're not, but they ARE free word of mouth if the game is good. That it won't be pirated until after the major sales period has already ended WOULD mean plenty of lost sales from lost word of mouth.

I think you're overestimating the value of word of mouth. Good marketing is much more valuable than word of mouth, and it spreads a lot farther, and seems to be doing a lot more for game sales these days.

I'd also like to add, calling everyone who talks about a new game a shill cripples word of mouth as it makes others distrust someone who would otherwise be telling people to try out a good game. Word of mouth has lost its value tremendously.

This isn't a new tactic. Spyro 3 did basically the same thing. They had ridiculous layers of anti-piracy for the time. I read an article on it years and years ago but it's on Gamasutra. The point wasn't to prevent pirates, but to hold them off a couple weeks.

That level was the bane of my existence. The farthest I could get in the game was the ice hub world after freeing the large yeti. I should probably emulate that.

I don't think so, no. My brother's been wanting Lords of the Fallen so I'm pirating that but I don't have my hopes up for it and from what I've seen Just Cause 3 is just Just Cause 2. MGSV is unfinished and I don't really buy the PW gameplay to be anything near good.

I can't think of any. Denuvo really is a turnoff for me. It's absolutely draconian. I respect when a dev puts in time with interesting anti-piracy, like the invincible scorpion in Serious Sam 3 and what Earthbound did. Even the little line in pirated copies of Fire Red and Leaf Green is neat. I like to buy to support devs when I can, but I don't buy anything with Denuvo, out of principle.

Generally I just pirate game to use as filler between games I actually enjoy like some people do with some shitty F2P.

A good comparison would be that one movie you wouldn't ever pay for but it's on TV and you don't have anything you want to do for the next 2 hours so you're watching it because it's free.

Funny thing is even going in with zero expectations I still managed to stumble on games that I simply couldn't bring myself to play more than an hour before wiping it, and that pretty hard to get me to do that.

Seeing as how games refuse to have proper fucking demos anymore I would like to pirate it to try it first. If I really like it, I'll buy it. But with denuvo games I just say fuck it and skip them. Besides, I doubt Doom 2016 is worth having in the longterm.

I only pirate games that I'm not sure are going to be any good because I don't want to have buyers remorse. If they do turn out to be good I recommend them to other people and eventually buy them once I have the money to do it.

Oh, I'm not denying that marketing plays a huge part in why games sell, to the point that today games sell on hype alone and little else. You can tell because the developers are careful to frontload the games (because game journalists and the average retard don't bother finishing the games for the most part) and only present professionally doctored slices of gameplay that will rarely, if ever, look as such in the final product.

And really, why would they bother? Call of Duty is the same game year in, year out, with only minimal changes to mechanics and it's a billion dollar franchise. Bethesda has, for the past 15 years, been re-releasing the same game with more content and mechanics removed, and horrible writing, and people still lap it up.

People seem to lack any sort of opinions of their own. If the people on TV tell them something is good they deluded themselves into thinking it is indeed good. Just pour 2/3 of your budget into marketing and no matter how shit the game is it will sell.

No it's not cracked. there is a very new exploit that let you play the game by installing Fifa 16 demo and then dumping the files of fifa 16 (real game) into the fifa 16 demo folder and editing some things. it's more of a bypass.

The funny thing is that those games that weren't cracked, nobody talks about them anymore.

You may think of pirates as lost sales, and in some cases it's probably correct. But pirates are still part of any community and if they play the game, they can still talk about it.
Word of mouth is and always will be a good way to market your shit and denying the pirate version is ensuring that the largest amount of people that could shill your game for free aren't gonna do so. They aren't even gonna talk shit about it, just forget it even existed, which according to marketing is worse than talking shit about it.

Just let nature run it's course. Denuvo doesn't generate extra sales, just apathy. And companies resorted to it because they were getting into serious financial problems so in a way, this is just sudoku for them.

Indie developers just won another positive tag for them "At least we don't use Denuvo" and companies that pull this shit of having Denuvo without telling anyone before the release date are gonna get bad publicity.
