The championship thing constrained what was once a pretty free affair, and things came to a head when it was discovered the championships were rigged to make some waifus win or some shit. It all died pretty much immediately afterwards.
I imagine the post errors prevented anyone to even think about resurrecting it for the longest time, too.

I confess I don't know, I couldn't follow the things directly at the time because the games happened in the dead of night for me. I only read about the rigging after the fact, but there weren't many details.
In any case I'd like to see a revival, but more in a "whenever someone feels like hosting" format.
