Is there a game genre that is totally dead?

Is there a game genre that is totally dead?

I don't mean "has only shitty games lately" or "has only niche freeware shit these days".
I mean 100%, completely and utterly deader than disco.
No games, no community, no nothing. Only memories and the graveyard.

Pic spiritually related.

the good game made by people who like games that doesn't take advantage of the consumer genre

YES.

Brawlers are dead, unfortunately.

I would say games like Metal Slug and beat 'em ups like Final Fight; also CRPGs but all of them pop up every once in a while.

What about DRM-Free Indie games.

Aren't RTS dead by now?

Horror games are almost there.

The last expansion of Starcraft 2 got released recently

FPS

Read it, faggot.

There hasn't been an FPS game in years

The only upcoming brawler / beat-'em-up that looks MILDLY interesting is Mother Russia Bleeds.

Even then, it's indie shit. Devolver Digital as publisher, though.

...

...

Non-SS13 BYOND games, text adventures, and 3D Chatrooms like Worlds.com or Cyber Oz City.

not completely dead and not confirmed total shit yet.

What about side scrolling games where you have to find items or they emphasis on exploring like Fantazy Zone or Athena.

Also what about games like Space Harrier or After Burner.

Now that I think again what about games like Virtua On or fighting robot games for that matter.

Car combat, and I mean real car combat ala I76 or Twisted Metal, not top down indie mobile tier crap.

There are recent text adventures on steam

Wave Racer

What do you mean by horror? It was never a well-defined genre to begin with.
Jump-scare simulators like Slender and FNAF are relatively simple to develop and guaranteed to get free publicity from face-cam tubers. They'll be around for a while.

Good Games
Best genre, RIP, 1984-2007

Point and Click adventure.

We'll never have another Silent Hill 2

...

Nice meme

...

Also, I remember seeing some exclusive awards for games made in AGS, some of the winners even got on steam.

I guess is not dead, just niche.

Fuck, I just realized submachine series ended

Arcade RPG
Like the Gauntlet series.

plenty of games have sniper rifles

single player story driven flight sims seem to be pretty fucken scarce, also mecha.

MMS=/=FPS

This doesn't really count as a genre but games with voxel tech that don't use it for autism simulators exclusively.

Are any of those actually decent? Also, there's still yearly competitions and the like with places like IFDB.

Could you elaborate?

What does that stand for anyway?

True action adventure.

I mean, action adventure without RPG elements, no numbers, no levels, just tools and a couple of visual aids like visible damage.

I miss shadow of the colossus…

Modern Military Shooter

Nigger, were you born stupid or did you eat paint chips as a kid?

Modern military shooters.

...

Two worlds and I would argue that any telltale game could be one

Telltale's last pnc was sam and max. Anything after that is absolutely not a pnc.

there's project reality

LGS'

This has to be bait
Setting=/=Genre

what the fuck

What in the actual fuck? Now you're just making shit up

There really is a clear difference between shit like COD and serious sam.

Linear Garbage Simulation

Arcade on rail shooters

RPG's

rip

...

And there is a difference between Hydro Thunder and Forza yet they are both racing games.

Are you fucking retarded?

Oh, it's one of those impossible standards faggots.
Do us all a favor and just end it

Blue Estate is on rails and came out recently. Don't know if it's good or not though.

Not sure if one game is enough to say that a genre isn't dead. Are there any other known on rail shooters being developed?

Also I lied, I played the new Time Crisis that came out and its ok, haven't beat it though.

Define Brawler.

Rougelikes.

Nobody makes Rougelikes anymore. They make "Rougelikes" or "Rougelike-likes."

PSO-alikes

I can't think of any games like the color of red. Are they like Madworld but red?

Nothing impossible about it when it's been done properly in the past.

durr shatzee said thos arnt shooturz duuhhhh

Whaaaaaaaat?! When did this happen?! Is it ever coming to consoles?.

...

I don't think its actually possible for a "genre" to ever be totally dead. Since all it would take is one game to be made for that genre.

Classic text adventures.

Probably the only real answer listed here. No one would even dear try to make a text based adventure game, one that is text based based on input, or one that is entirely text based where there are no visuals.

There aren't really any communities for them since I don't think anyone "really" misses them, since trying to guess the right verb the programmer was a nightmare.

Still though, I think there are a few MUD mmos that still do that shit. Complete with perma death characters.

Disco never died, just became very niche
Just like game genres
Bad thread, OP

Pretty sure Rougelikes are games in the style of Riana Rouge

Light gun games, being as the technology doesn't work on modern TVs.

3D platformers?

These kids can't handle something like Zork.

I think FMV games are still around.

FMV games are absolutely dead.

This is what happens when you base your entire game on technological gimmicks.

Looking at you VR and Motion Controls. Make games with a good core or don't make them at all.

I'd say SanctuaryRPG count as a text based adventure game. Came out a couple years ago, with a recent updated rerelease a year later. It's got ASCII visuals, but everything is text based.

God, Mercenary Kings is shit.
It tries to be a cross between Metal Slug and Metal Gear Solid (for the story cutscenes) and fails at both. It's grindy, it's repetitive, and it's boring. 0/10

What about Her Story?

Her story was shit but somehow won tons of awards at gdc this year, including 'most innovative', dispite using 20~ year old technology.

Platformers.
I miss Crash Bandicoot.

The plastic instrument genre.

theres plenty of platformers

it just they're all indie garbage now

A walking simulator is not a platformer.

a new guitar hero came out last year with a new shitty guitar and rock band came back too

...

Holy shit, that's a blast to the past. Been collecting dust for far too long.

Barring Wave Race 64 and Blue Storm, have there even BEEN any jet ski games? (DoA Volleyball excluded). The last HydroThunder has to be like a decade old, too.

Does the Hydro Thunder game for Xbox 360 counts? It has some of the best water physics out of any game.

Oh fuck, I think I played the demo for that. Good shit. But that was also six years ago, and should qualify as a "dead" genre for the OP, I'd think.

Fuckwits.

There are no dead genres. All game genres are made at least every few years.

Except.

Mech Sims.

MWO isn't THAT old and MAV just hit early access beta.

Yes it would. So far I think this is the only answer that satisfies my question.

RIP water racers. I played the ever-loving shit out of hydrothunder on my dreamcast.

Sim games. Not meme "simulators" or physics demo games, but shit like this.

Cities skylines just came out recently. That covers what simcity used to at the very least.

Pong clone?

...

That's a real broad genre, user.

Underrail came out in December or something. Turn-based and Isometric.

I hadn't seen MAV but fuck I looks like absolute shit. Graphics matter

Speaking of sim games, i found a copy of sim coaster a week ago at a thrift store, is it any good?

I only ever had Sim Tower, wikipedia has sparse information on it, it's known as Theme Park Inc to most of the world. No clue if it's good or not.

i think he means survival horror.
where instead of jump scares. the game fucks with your mind.

It's a Chromehounds knockoff so you'll be able to make your own camoflauge to hide the ugly robots. The environments are a different story but you can only hope. I want to believe.

Stealth games are dead. A number of shooters and RPGs have 'stealth' systems but that's about it.

Is it the one by Bullfrog? If yes then go for it.

The fuck is a brawler

ASSFAGGOTS

[spoilers]post yfw it happens[/spoiler]

God games

How's your first day on Holla Forums

well, to be honest ==NOT DOING SO GREAT==

First person point and click adventure games.

I'd give you a pop tart but we don't have pop tarts where I come from

Think Double Dragon.

Well there are some porn games, like Corruption of Champions and RAGS games, but those games usually have buttons assigned to every action, such as Fight, Go South, Open Door, Pick up key, and so on.

Cereal tie in advertisement?

If " a good video game" was a genre ot would be dead.

It's roguelikes, and the genre is still alive but the problem is that there's barely any actual roguelike games at all. Also not a lot of people are autistic enough to play them so they move on to roguelites which is more alive but is also garbage.

Here's a simple way to think of it

Quality=/=Quantity

Text parser adventure games.

is it too much to expect from modern game developers a level design on the level of 20 years old games?

Played at least two of those in the recent years. Flash games, admittedly, but still text parser games.
One was called something along the lines of "Don't shit your pants", the other was about zombies.

You tried.

Car crashing games

Within the last year. It's pretty cool. Has the weapon switching of the previous one, terror bites, and also lets you switch what angle you take cover and shoot from using 2 floor pedals.

Submarine Simulators.
After Ubioft rushed Silent Hunter V and kiilled their own series just to test their DRM nobody wanted to make another GOOD 3D submarine simulator.

I will develop a console text adventure.

Someone make a story.

The story of a man who sets out to suck more cock than anyone ever has before in order to save his terminally ill sister

You wrote an autobiography?

u bet bby ;)

This is a terrible idea. You're not much of a writer if you're coming up with this SJW nonesense

Have you like ever read a doujin

No. We had a few titles last year and we expect some more soon.

Puzzle games that aren't casual Match-3 bullshit that middle-aged moms play on their shitty Lagdroid phone

Arcade Racers

puzzle-platformers also

Nintendo literally just published Picross 3D 2 in EU and it's coming to US.

FAST

Dead as balls. Yooka Laylee and Anton and Coolpecker maybe though

Damn, i didnt want to get a 3ds for a single game but picross is my jam.

Let me breathe for once

I can only say this is completely true of two kinds of game: The FMV Adventure Game (like Tex Murphy), and the 2D Beat-em-up.

A Text Murphy game got released like two years ago, and Her Story got released like one year ago.

I am sure there are a lot of such games on Newgrounds

RTS

Didn't mean to quote

As another user said ITT, the latest expansion of SC2 got released last year.

6DOF shooters are pretty dead.

Mother Russia Bleeds is coming out soon. When the fuck is that supposed to be happening, anyway? Didn't they say Q2 2016?

I meant real RTS', not e-sports shit.

Horror genre

FPS genre

Puzzle genre

Guro genre

Open world action adventure genre

Left to right 2d shooters genre

You mean a side-scrolling beat 'em up?

There's also Dragon's Crown, and that is at least a 9/10

Seconding this. Here's hoping Yooka Laylee isn't shit.

Stronghold Crusader 2
8-bit armies

That's pretty recent, but they were dead for quite a long time and are now coming back just slightly.

More likely games like Osu will stay alive but for games that require expensive peripherals, those are pretty much dead compared to how popular they were about 10 years ago.

Isn't Dragon's Crown and River City Ransom both 2D beat-em ups?

but user, the entire videogames industry is dead

...

...

Old Sierra-style adventure games.

Who the fuck is markaplier

He's the Booper Dooper

I would say really niche games like text based exploration games

a youtube fag

my sister watches him, tat is why I know

Live action gun games like Mad Dog Mcree, totally dead surely.

Also VR games, soon. Just like 3d TV.

All 3DS picross games work perfectly in citra.

You're a retard, m8.

It's because these people don't play video games. It's not innovative. It's certainly neat for a puzzle game, but that's it, really.

Chex Quest is still one of my favorite wads.

Trap Quest

Aren't there 2 Descent-inspired games that just released? Along with a new actual new Descent game that's VR compatible?

THE PRO GAMER, MARKIPLIER, YOU CAN TELL HE'S A PRO BY THE WEBUM AND THE WAY HE SAYS BOOPER DOOPER. He's an e-celeb.

Virtual Online Chatrooms

I wonder if anybody actually makes real games on them, and not just niche fetishes

How much of an introvert do you have to be for that?

I guess 3D PC sci-fi vehicle combat sims, including but not limited to mecha and hovercrafts

There one with the rights to the descent name I'd avoid entirely, upcoming you have sol contingency and overload (I think it's called) that may be good
There's also a little known game called neonXSZ or something, have not played it though.

The isometric action RPG is basically dead.

Came here to say this. RIP Time Crisis, Virtua Cop, House of the Dead, CarnEvil. You were too good for this world.

I miss arcade racers with a blatant disregard for physics and reality. GRIP does a decent job with that itch, but it doesn't compare to the crazy bullshit the Thunder or Motorstorm series whipped out. Like driving through a flooded NYC or avoiding lava.

Car combat.

Check out Riptide GP. It used to be a mobile game but got ported and is actually very decent

Gas Guzzlers Extreme.

...

It's the most alive genre right now aside from FPS.

Runescape is basically that

but it doesn't have le funny pirates!!!

That genre never existed, you sad, nostalgic autist

When was the last time a game like Final Fight, River City Ransom, or Streets of Rage was made?

I know those last two are somewhat old and one's definitely a flash game, but quit being retarded.

Virtual life simulation.

Games like Myst/Riven are dead. Shmups are pretty close.

...

Come to think of it, do any games come out now where you control a vehicle the whole time?

I had high hopes for Vector Thrust, and the gameplay does have that Ace Combat feel, but the campaign isn't even half finished.

Non-gookclick RTS games.
Planetary Annihilation was a glimmer of hope that turned into a dismal disappointment.

RaidersSphere4th exists, but I have no idea how good it is.

Futuristic racing games.

Also, AA games. Everything is AAA or indie now. Nothing in between.

There's quite a few, actually. It's just not alive as it once was.

Nitronic Rush
Distance

Very very fast games.

example :Fzero.

Retro beat em up games.

I find modern beat em ups divert greatly from the original sense so I can't count those and to find ones that still use the old style have communities long dead.

What I wouldn't give for a new Vigilante 8

Rhythm games are now a really small niche, forced to obscurity and smartphone games.

Custom mech building/fighting as well.

Survival Horror is a dead genre. All we're getting are mislabeled Action Horror games like modern Resident Evil and shitty walking simulators claiming the same.

It wasn't total shit though.
The story was pretty damn good. Crazier twist then most Ace Attorney games.

Violin Hero when?

Gundam Breaker 3 just game out

You just used one of the slowest games in the genre of really fast racing games to define a genre that is not dead.

Fast Racing Neo just came out this year. it's fast.

Anyway learn true speed faggot

man you made me happy for a whole 5 sec.

I said :custom:

Can you create a mech with two heads, fifteen arms and no legs in Gundam Breaker?

I see what you mean now.
And now you've made me sad.
Hold me.

This seriously makes me nauseous

...

Rythm games

Isn't Dwarf Fortress entirely text based?

Ascii art, so technically. Freecities is text-based in the traditional sense, like playing Zork. Or if you're a degenerate, Liberal Crime Squad.

Single player squad based tactical FPS games were once a genre. The classic Rainbow Six's, the last two SWAT games, the first two Ghost Recons etc

Now every shitty team shooter slaps "tactical" on it and retards gobble it up.

People claim that multiplayer FPS's are the revival of the tactical FPS, they're not. Tactical FPS game either didn't have multiplayer or slapped it on as an afterthought.

For 2D beat-em-ups, we have Double Dragon Neon. It's a remake, but it exists.

I suddenly feel extremely nauseous.

What about it?

Wow this is even worse than I thought it could ever be.

I can feel the cancer growing inside of me after watching that.

Ahhh… Scott Pilgrim that's when we knew the bazinga cancer in vidya is incurable.

There's a level of shamelessness that is needed to do something as disgusting as this.

To be fair Scott Pilgrim's cancer was mostly music hipsters and retro fags.

It showed suits that "hipster retro geek stuff" is very profitable.

Stealth Games

Styxx

Next.

Wow you showed me

he's like the other pewdiepie.

Souls-likes
like Dark souls

read the OP faggot

...

If you compare Netflix to regular TV, Netflix wins in every aspect. You can watch anything you want to watch at any time and is quite cheaper. YT is pretty much same thing but with more shitty videos but is at the same time free.

Now what would child or jew, that have no money to spend, watch? YT obviously, shitty LPs are still better than random cartoon and most likely your parent is occupying TV.

It was only matter of time TV starts being as popular as YT stars.

Thanks for remembering what the term dead actually means OP.

For that I am giving your thread a bump.

What about first person dungeon crawler rpgs like bards tale? Does that kind of thing still exist?

Tycoon games.

...

Why is The Grinch shooting the ceiling?

Fuck I miss Autoduel. Even though it was overtaken by the space sim genre (pretty much the same thing as long as it has an open world and IN SPAAAACE. But Autoduel was one of the first and will always have a special place in my heart. Anyway my point is, the gameplay between that and open world space sims is the same. In one you're driving a car about shooting things, making money and improving your vehicle. In the other you're doing all the same things with a spaceship. So what's there to call a different genre?

I miss shit like this.

Privateer! that's what I was thinking of. Fucking awesome game for its time. I wish there were something to equal it even today that's not MMORPG.

...

Aren't Tycoon games dead? They used to be the biggest genre for shovelware at one point, but now they seem desolate.

...

Tycoon games still come out but like point and click games they stopped being made by AAA devs and instead are largely made by really small independent developers or made on such a shoestring budget nobody buys them.

It's more indicative of modern gaming as a whole since simulation and strategy games stopped making the big money, and companies started focusing solely on action games.

Doom clones

Late 2012, and it plays very different from normal Tycoon games. Though I suppose there's no rigid definition for the genre. It's certainly not like a classic one, like Roller Coaster Tycoon, DinoPark Tycoon, or Zoo Tycoon.

Post some? I haven't seen any in years.

Are there any recent First-person dungeon crawlers for anything that's not a handheld?

Define recent. Legend of Grimrock 2 came out within the past, what, 3 years?

Why? There are some great first person dungeon crawlers on both Nintendo and Sony handhelds.

I just want something for PC or console man. There's only so much Etrian Odyssey games I can take.

It had a sequel that released last month
store.steampowered.com/app/404640/

Just search "Tyoon" in steam and you'll find a shitton of games released in just the last few years. It's not a dead genre by any stretch of the imagination.

And yes it's not a "classic' one mostly because it was made by an indie dev, most of the ones you've posted were made by AAA developers that actually had a budget and experience. As well as distribution and marketing. The Point and Click comparison I made is fairly apt because it used to be a genre that was similarly done by major studios that pretty much only gets done by small independent studios on a shoestring budget with no marketing.

I'll just link some that have been released since 2015.

This genre cold reborn with the VR.
Just Stick a wiifit board under and you will detect the CG movement left/right and implement cover for it

This

most games that have attempted this in recent memory were either garbage or had better re-releases. I remember all of the most recent Time Crisis games were pretty bad.

I remember the most recent House of the Dead game was decent but I honestly preferred the Typing of the Dead version.

After first person shooters got really popular and arcades pretty much entirely died out the genre itself felt really outdated. Like said it might come back with VR but who knows.

Fishing games!. These are my favorite ones, too bad the american audience couldn't appreciate these kind of games and therefore they died.

gee I wonder why

In Big Ol' Bass 2 ypu can even catch dinosaurs.

Arena FPS's are very close. Toxikk is over a year old, Reflex is nearing two years, and Unreal Tournament is still in development. That's all I can think of. You can include Disco Dodgeball if you're an asshole.

Mecha has been on life support for years.

Not dead, but dying slowly

...

I just don't understand why. What's not to love about giant robots?

ZoE has a mech/space-opera setting but it's a hack 'n' slash.

The bullshit excuse would be to say if there's not enough view of the pilot, there's no human connection. Bullshit of course because of the amount of fucking FPSes out there and game where the hero is some faceless cunt in power armor.

HBS is working on a battletech game, but I guess you mean games where you play as the pilot.

That is honest to God the most spot on description of him I have ever heard.

But that's completely wrong. Text adventures are going strong and getting more popular. They're just very niche. Check out hadean lands for a recent release

Welp.

I'm ready for the great fire now.

God is dead and the jews have won.

Sandbox MMOS with no main questlines.

i tried M.A.V a few months back and i had a horrible experience. From the graphics to the performance to the gameplay. Has it improved?

It's hard being a cyberpunk fag. top-down doesn't fucking count, eat shit

can anyone recommend me comfy samurai games? Like, real quiet and mellow ones. Preferably winter.

way of the samurai *

I have it.

...

...

You can have samurai or you can have comfy, but you can't have both

The only decent samurai games I can think of will have you bathing in the blood of your enemies and will ram your asshole in with a naginata if you're not careful

Fine give me that.

And I swear to god if you give me revengeance

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is the only one you need tho :^)

Honestly though, there aren't that many samurai games period, let alone good ones, which I think is criminal

The best I can think of are Way of the Samurai, Sword of the Samurai, Bushido Blade, and M&B Warband with the Gekokujo mod. I suppose Onimusha would count as well, but that's not quite what people have in mind when they go looking for samurai games.

Oh, and also just remembered

Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan and Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin. Those are actually pretty comfy now that I think about it.

The catch?

3D platformers are so dead that people are itching for collectathons like Yooka Laylee just because they're kinda sorta close to platformers (just without much if any actual platforming).

...

Yooka Laylee will be the next memetale with sonic tier and metric fucktons of autism.
Holla Forums will love it and then they will hate it.

I wouldn't call Compile Heart games AAA, they're not indie either.

Crypt of the necrodancer is fairly new

Well, Haven & Hearth and Wurm Online exist.

There is this really weird one coming out. Its called mother russia or something like that. It reminded me of hotline miami in the aesthetic.

paddle games

An eternal early access game with little to no progress being shown doesn't really count

Probably only FMV games like dragon's lair.

And some bigger studios willing to take chances on non-blockbuster projects. Some.

Nail on the head. I'm dying for something that isn't ironic no effort half game or Action Movie Simulator 2016.

Not a full genre, but Games (especially Rhythm games) that use your body or physical exertion/exercise as control like DDR, etc. Outside of arcades this might be pretty dead, since most Rhythm Games now seem be touch on phones.

And stuff like Wii Fit seems to be on the way out along with motion controls, though they will likely revive if VR becomes big.

They train to have no shame every single day they stream or make videos.

I don't see a problem here

Not sure if it counts as a "genre", but shareware/demoware

God games and stealth tames get hardly any releases outside of super niche indieshit.

Truly dead is unlikely though. Almost every genre has a small community left playing at least one game.

If you can call it a genre the 'community fps' is dying out quickly. I'd define this as an FPS game with dedicated servers in which the vast, vast majority of servers are run by small groups/clans and have a regular playerbase who play for fun with each other rather than competition. The rise of matchmaking and the fact all the kiddies are drifting towards it rather than joining a server and learning how to behave means servers like that will probably die off over the next decade. Modded content was also a big factor as it was what set apart one server from the next. Even games that do have mods nowadays require you to download them manually instead of auto-downloading when you join a server hosting, say, a custom map.

We've already seen the community feeling of CS get buttfucked by CS:GO's MM nonsense, for example. CSS was a terrible game in and of itself but people really didn't play it on the merits of its gameplay. TF2 took the same hit with F2P.

Nethack just got updated 5 months ago user.

Rogue you fucking retard. Rogue.

LCD display games.
Nintendo had the Game & Watch, and loads of Chinese guys have their shitty LCD games and knockoffs. Most of the games on there are just the same ones over and over though.

4th dimensional pinball.

This is one of the most fun arcade games I've ever seen. How did this never get ported to anything?

Adventure games like Spyro and Legacy of Kain. What gets made these days is just depressing

I know that feel. I keep looking for them, but they just aren't there.

I yearn for a huge world with quests and hard, traditional action.

depression Quest

OP said game genre, user.

Nigga that's the original, Escape from the Pit

But Exile 3 was definitively the best one in the trilogy

They’re commonly called “blobbers.” Just this year, there’s StarCrawlers and Frayed Knights 2 coming out. From the last few years, there’s Lords of Xulima, Legend of Grimrock 1/2, Might & Magic X, Elminage: Gothic, Paper Sorcerer, Underworld, Cardhalia, Gods: Lands of Infinity… Not to mention heaps more from Japan on consoles, many of them free of weeb-ness.

Just like every other kind of RPG, after being essentially deceased for a decade or more, the Kikestarter renaissance spurred a tremendous incline in the number of them coming out now.

That reminds me of the Metroid Prime games and the N64 vaporware Robotech: Crystal Dreams, where looking toward a bright light source could cause “your” reflection to appear in the visor/canopy.

The face reflection also was in Toy Story 2 for PSX, surprisingly enough.

Games like Space Harrier is really dead
As for mecha fighting games, there is Gundam Breaker 3

and you'll never will, muahahahahahahahaha

this is the only correct answer in this thread.

fuck i miss vigilante 8
