A time limit over the entire course of the game (maybe counting down to self-destruct, or dwindling oxygen) to encite greater tension and "optional" gameplay means to reduce it.

I'm thinking of a Co-op hybrid. Part RTS, Part FPS, basically a one sided Natural Selection. One player uses an interface to herd people to certain areas of the ship, building obstacles and traps to keep aliens back. The other player(s) are put into an FPS mode of keeping the aliens back and making sure civilians are safe. Possible classes could be Engineers that work on keeping the RTS player's defenses up and building things of his own, a Medic to revive players and the civilians, Doomguy character who can rip and tear through the aliens in bursts. Give FPS characters the ability to tell civies to go with their group or help them put up a barricade or other simple tasks.

I'm thinking a third person Dead Space style gameplay would be interesting for the guys on the ground.

Off the top of my head I'm tempted to say that I'd take the Dead Rising structure and apply it.

So you've got a time limit, certain tasks that need to be accomplished to 'win' but a shitload of additional tasks that you can and should accomplish to really understand what's going on and 'complete' the game.

Survivors you have to rescue, improvised weaponry (maybe less ridiculous than Dead Risings) possibly stat carry over between playthroughs.

Something like that.

Player character which can crouch his hitbox down to worm size, crawling on his knees. This would let you fit through incredibly low-narrow spaces which only a facehugger could fit through.

Real-time terrain/object modification and physics handling.
If you're crawling in a ventillation system then the vent might break into half.
If you're in a room then the floor, ceiling, walls might break down.

Xenos could break through walls and vent walls and grab you through them killing you in there or sending you to their base hive. Then your buddy marines would have to risk saving you.

Highly-interactive alien goo terrain which enables you to hide, crawl, climb in it and perhaps place/remove it like a substance object, like the water from minecraft.

Zero gravity which doesn't feel like you're moon jumping or swimming.

Elevators, a huge amount of customized elevators which can change speeds, that can go horizontal, diagonal, rails-on elevators like a locomotive train. Elevators which can break, dismember, have weapons on it, toxic gas, extra compartments, etc. etc.

What is this? Can you give popular examples I may have heard of?

Basically Dead Rising

You're an ayy lmao crusing along in your spaceship when all of a sudden a bunch of nasty fucking humies blast the walls open and burst into your ship!
They're bigger, stronger, and more armed than you. Are you a bad enough dude to get the fuck out before you get purged?

So basically the Tau each time they encounter Space Marines?

The player is put in a space station that's falling apart and is overrun by all sorts of nasty xenos, you play as one of eight different seven demons and have to fuck and suck your way to the escape pods before the cold vacuum of space claims you. There are other survivors also trying to escape that you encounter, some might be helpful, some might throw you into a pile of alien dicks without hesitation as a distraction.

The place is huge labyrinth of xenomass and steel, the two main gameplay thingies are the exploration of the station and repairing things so that you can progress. Resources are limited and you have to avoid getting impregnated by the xenos in bizarre ways.

Yeah, people have got it covered. Give you a lenient time limit to get lots done. Allow lots of replay value. Dead Rising is a good pick to build it around, that game offered six endings, 50 survivors to find and save, quite a few optional bosses to go with those survivors. Lots of little things like outfits, weapons, books and magazines to experiment with, PP stickers for collectibles and even some vehicles to have a bit of extra fun with.

Combine that type of approach to a big space station, full of vents as well for some claustrophobic action and we're set. I imagine some variety to the xenos would help. Ones that use guns and weaponry show up near the end or at a certain point in the main story, but for the most part you have dumb and easy brutes to find and cut through or even avoid.

What if there was a mode where you could play as the aliens? You could do all kinds of shit to fuck with the humans like cutting off the power, luring players in with a dummy civilian, and spitting on them. Maybe it could be a team versus mode like in Left 4 Dead, but with humans versus aliens.

Okay here's my idea. Imagine this massive international bank's HQ. This bank treats people like trash, both its clients and its employees. It is basically the most evil corporation that ever existed.

Now you have these three guys who all work for the company, but in different areas (HR which is like the company's gestapo, accounting who knows where the money goes and who needs some extreme justice delivered, and maintenance who knows all the nooks and crannies of the building).

They plan this massive heist/assassination and the game begins with you selecting one of these guys and carrying out the plan.

The thing is, there was a mole. So the heads of the bank decided to make the most of this and throw a massive human hunting party at HQ, and all three of you are the grand prize.

Basically, it's a heist gone terribly, terribly wrong. It'd have a thriller/horror type of feel to it. There are several company heads each assigned a floor to hunt. Each one of them has a different style (one of them has a hard-on for the military so he has PMC goons and explosives and whatnot, the other is a traditional noble hunter type of guy with bloodhounds and a small hunter team, and the other is a total perverse psychotic sex fiend that will send his mutilated sex slaves and doms after you. I placed them in order of increasing spoopyness.

Your goal is originally to carry out the plan, then to either save as many people from the genocide as possible, gtfo yourself or go full bloodlust and settle to kill everything and everyone until you manage to assassinate the heads as planned.

Basically, if you kill no one and save everyone you can unlock a full set of small stories of the company's employees that act as small pieces of bonus gameplay and background. If you just get out yourself, you unlock alternate costumes for the character that got out or maybe new weapons and tools. But if you go full bloodlust (the hardest, because you have to kill the heads), you get the true ending, where you reaalize all three of you were moles because you sold each other out to the heads, but become so intoxicated with the feeling of revenge that the game ends with you and whoever survived planning another assassination this time against each other.

A game in which you're a high school teacher at an ayylmao school that's having an affair with one of his alien students, underage by Earth standards but well into legal maturity on her own planet. After sneaking off to indulge in student-teacher relationships in a broom closet, the school's nuclear fallout alarms begin blaring, and the students have to evacuate to the shelters below the school. Stinking with the smells of sweat, semen, and alien fluids (also semen), your mission is to sneak into one of the gym's unused shelters with one of your alien student/concubine partially fused to your dick. To do this, you need to make use of props, darkness, light (in the case of some aliens), and cultural ignorance to discretely get to your destination, so that you can keep your job.

You evacuate everyone and then it turns out that the aliens are just an all female race of hot women and they decide to make you their king

The player needs to guide the main character out of the hospital facility they've been taken to after the character's 'accident'. Which robbed said character of their senses of hearing and sight.
Luckily, the main character is a sublime hacker, and can use their hacking implant to wirelessly interface with the facility, and have it act as their eyes and ears.
Now they just need to get beyond all the tortured and in pain half-alien half-man creatures that beg for the main character to join their ecstasy.

This is the best game idea I've ever seen.
