Me as well. I finished college and within three months, which I spent scrambling to look for a job, my parents retired to another country. I spent a year struggling to keep up with all the shit I had to do, and get over being too shy to do certain things like go to the dmv or make phone calls regarding bills. I wasted a ton of money that first year. Second year, I got a girlfriend and learned how to have a stable relationship and maintain a home, I bought a house and had almost everything fixed. This year, I've learned how to cook, and am teaching myself to do basic things around the house like installing blinds, taking care of the yard properly, etc.

Something that immensely helped my self esteem was welding classes. It showed me that I'm actually good at something, that I have talent, even if I'm only going to weld small scarp sculptures as a hobby.

I worked part time at a car headlight factory, and it depends on the type of headlights. Changing the cheap, common ones is a matter of a minute or two, but the more expensive you go, the harder it gets, essentially. If you've got a fancy car with headlights that go into several thousand dollars, it's practically impossible to change them yourself.

This is especially fucked up when you realize that the cause for this problem is primarily our school system.

It's not the school system's job to train you how to be an adult. That is your parents' job.

You sat down, read a page-long snippet of the book in question, then the teacher spoiled you the rest of the story, then you spent 15 minutes talking about what the author meant by X (often some far fetched shit that I bet didn't even occur to the author when writing it), then you spent another few minutes talking about the author himself since I guess writing a few shitty poems about grass is enough to get you a permanent place in a history book, and then you repeat all that shit again with a different book. What is the purpose of this shit? To have very, very superficial knowledge about all the "classics"? This shit doesn't make you cultured since you don't actually fucking read the classics, you just read the synopsis. It makes you a pretentious faggot that'll get blown out the water by anyone who knows something about the subject or even by anyone who actually did read the fucking book – it's just there so you can fake knowledge and have a conversation topic with other pretentious faggots about books neither of you had ever read. And yet it's one of the subjects that takes the most time in the schedule!

I actually had 9 hour school days, and an average of 7 hours a week in the later parts of my school career, which is 8 hours a day if you count commuting. This is without considering the time spend on homework and other school preparation. After fulfilling all your obligations you then need some time yourself for sports, hygiene, socializing with friends, hobbies and so on, so sounds reasonable.
More importantly, you can't just teach a kid the missing skills, you have to fix the damages the school has done as well. You know things are fucked up, when you have siblings which have been humiliated so much by their teachers that they've turned into schizophrenics, to be sucked up by big pharma, yet you couldn't even make those teachers lose their job.

We shouldn't presume that kids actually learn anything while at school. It's for the most part just rote memorization. I can barely think of anything useful except for reading and basic math I've actually learned there. History consisted of 3 years of muh Hitler, geography was stuff like memorizing all African states and capitals and spending a whole year learning about plate tectonics what could be learned by watching a 40 minute documentary, literature was spending hundreds of hours talking about 2 shit books a year, like Anne Frank's diary or some irrelevant romantic crime novel, and sport was about fucking up peoples joints by giving them advice that's been outdated for several decades. Physics and math wouldn't have been so bad if the pace wasn't adjusted to the lowest common denominator.
The things that you actually do learn in school are more likely to be negative. You learn to suck it up when your punished unjustly, you learn that it's better not to take risks than say something that might be wrong, you learn to please your superior even if you know you're bullshitting and are generally adjusted to be uncreative, unquestioning and dependent on your superiors.

I guess things in america are really in the shitter then. I live in central Europe (the eastern part) and learned mostly useful stuff at school, if often irrelevant to my field. In elementary school, I learned basic math, reading, and writing as well as some bare basics on biology, chemistry, and the like, and then went on to six year gymnasium where we covered essentially everything in enough depth so as to have a good enough idea about how shit works. In geography, we went over all the countries in the world so as to know where shit is on the map, as well as doing all that geology shit that nobody likes, in biology we went over everything from rocks through insects and animals to humans, history started with apes and slowly went all the way to about 60's (the last year ended before the teacher managed to finish) and only spend about a month on WW2, and so on.

It was not enough to make you a specialist in something, but that's what universities are for. My time at gymnasium gave me a solid basis for practically all the fields out there, and taught me a lot. Also, very few of the teacherstried being political, and the few who did only did probably didn't even realise it (shit like "we should be tolerant blahblahblah")

No, nobody learns history in school today. The Chinese immigrant in my college group knows more US history than the rest of us because he studied it before coming over here. Most of my schooling was focused on geography, Africa, very simplified world history, and social studies. Almost zero US history of any kind, and absolutely zero State history at all. You should try looking into eastern european education materials, or at least the shit we study. It's boring as hell for the most part, but covers everything (at least the basics) and doesn't require too many props (pro tip: teaching history without using maps of the period is utterly worthless).

The less gifted ones - They are bombarded with BAD GRADES BAD GRADES BAD GRADES and so are led to think that they are worthless and can't accomplish anything because they fail at the only thing they are supposed to be good at at their age [1].
When they continue to get pressured into becoming a good student despite having already given up on that, they will become angry, and will direct their anger at education / culture / learning (therefore joining Category A)
But they will still want to not be shit at school, since they see that as their duty, meaning that they'll either work hard for something they don't want (Category B) or just cheat (Category C)

Also worth noting is the silent agreement that you don't tell the authority (teachers) when others cheat (commit crimes)

Yes, the act of simply turning a piece of plastic, pulling out an old bulb and putting a new one in is easy. That's not how new cars work. I just recently put in a new headlight, I had to remove the windshield wiper fluid reservoir to change mine.

Was it hard to do? Not really, but it took a few minutes to figure out the puzzle of how I was most effectively going to gain access to my headlight. I'm not about to go through the embarrassment of paying another man to put a lightbulb in for me, but I could totally see some soccer mom not wanting to go through the hassle.

Most of modern auto maintenance and repair isn't the actual maintenance or repair, it's gaining access to the part. That's assuming they don't use proprietary parts or require proprietary tools that cost more than a shop visit would.
