tbh you can wipe empty space on a HDD using a single pass to really get rid of everything you "deleted". More passes make no difference as only the first one gets rid of the file (content) and it's header (what tells the computer that something is really there).

If you delete something there's plenty of free programs that can flip the "deleted" tag out of files in say, two to three hours on a 1/2TB HDD on a non-shit computer, without anyone's supervision. The fact that "IT PROS" charge thousands of dollars for this shit is a fucking joke.

You may wish to pick up a copy of Eraser to perform such a wipe. It's convenient and has multiple settings for erasure, depending on your paranoia levels.

I've heard of people recovering data from single-pass wipes, but it takes a bit more work than your local police department is willing to put in for someone accused of piracy. But the DoD standard is basically all you'll ever need, as I've never heard of anyone managing to recover after more than two passes.

I've personally seen people get fired because they forgot to wear their MED badge outside of their shirt and companies can get away with that fiscally because the turnover in the industry is massive and a firing and hiring costs nothing compared to getting the state in their shit because an undercover inspector or a surprise inspection gave them an excuse to levy a fine or shut them down.
