So long as they don't piss off Japan they're going to dominant Asia for the foreseeable future, but eventually they're going to have to expand, if not for population requirements, than for resources as they're doing in Africa and nobody will be able to stop them.

If the West collapses Asia will be in a better position than us and at the very least they'll be the ones economically ruling us since our lifestyle has far exceeded our capacity to produce. Kind of hard to recover when you have no industry left, let alone compete with a country you built by giving them all of it along with designs and patents. Making matters worse you could see a whole new wave of migrants in a reverse when our system crashes. one way to solve this is to pump seawater into the oil field to keep the pressure up, however this is quite destructive to the field and any equipment so the effect you will see is not like american oil field which have a symmetric curve going up and down as the field depletes, but rather a sharp cutoff as the seawater makes further oil extraction to costly due to purification issues

I do not think that the BRICS are in any position to take on the responsibility of the reserve currency of the world for several reasons. I will hit what I think are the three biggest things.

1) Political Stability

If a nation is not stable, it will not be a candidate for the reserve currency of the world. Basically if a nation cannot even keep its own house in order and people are constantly on the verge or having no power, water, food, then there is no chance of their currency remaining stable. Brazil, not a chance, politically they are unstable ( I don't mean in the sense of total societal collapse, but as in not stable like Western nations or Japan). India, and South Africa for the same reason, India can barely govern itself and South Africa(?) are you serious in thinking that a nation that was once so prosperous is going to somehow become a powerhouse with the blacks running [read: destroying] everything?

Of all the BRICS, Russia and China are "stable" in a sense because their governments maintain order, though Russia is more or less a criminally run nation where corruption runs rampant, same for China, except the Chinese have to constantly worry about their people losing control and destroying everything because they didn't get their way, they used to have so many "demonstrations" a year (usually involving 10s -100s of thousands of people they stopped reporting the number of them.

2) Labor Costs

India, China and Russia have to deal with educated masses (more or less) and those people don't want to work for nothing like the Chinese have for decades, and the Chinese are getting tired of being the slaves of the world. In fact, because the costs of labor have been rising in China, companies are moving to other countries in South East Asia, or simply Mexico/USA. When companies do a cost-benefit analysis, they are not seeing the benefit to doing business in China like they once did. When the wages go up "to high" businesses will simply pull up stakes and move somewhere else, why do you think they moved to China in the first place?

South Africa and Brazil have uneducated masses on the other hand, but because their political and societal cohesion has basically evaporated over the decades due to the end of Apartheid or Brazil becoming a "democracy" [read: communist-lite]. They won't have their labor costs increase, but even though that won't happen, they won't get developed like the others have been by virtue of their incredible amounts of instability, which would be a constant threat to any business that would open up shop their.

3) Transition

What I mean by transition, is this, a nation-state that is capable of moving from simple producer to a consumer-producer balance. If a nation is simply one that makes things (cheaply) and never moves to a position where the economy can function without simply making things, it won't hold together forever, just ask the Japanese how that worked out for them, and they are linguistically, socially, ethnically and culturally united, problems that the West has but was able to move through in spite of that.

Also, when recessions or depression hit a nation that does nothing but make things, they get hit hard as you can possibly be hit, because nobody can afford to buy the things that they make anymore. Thus, their populations all of a sudden are experiencing what the Germans did after WWI, and it should be noted that the Germans didn't have their nation destroyed in that war, battlefields would simply obliterate everything, but the homelands were more or less safe (sans, the Jew uprising in Germany). The USA experience something like that as well during the depression, it just hit the Germans first then the rest of the world (Western/White nations).

This is by no means an endorsement of a "consumerist" mindset, but you have to have a nation of producers and users, producers make and the users are capable of buying, thus the cycle keeps itself propped up without outside intervention, the opposite of Globalism. And producers in my context, also involve those in "service/producer" industries, like architects, engineers, developers and researchers as well as people who work in the actual factory.

In Conclusion (and back to the thread topic, proper)

The Saudis will not leave the dollar, we are their bulwark against Iran and we play fairly nice with them even though they don't treat us anywhere near as well as they should. We also share intelligence with them a great deal on terrorists in the region, since they are a threat to the stability of the Middle East, and the Saudis, above all else, want to maintain stability in the region, less it spill over into their borders. They give us intelligence and then we blow up the terrorists.

And let's be real, the Chinese Renminbi, it ties itself to the dollar already, though they allow it to "float" freely some but not that much. The Euro, with crisis after crisis in the Euro zone, and such economically diverse nations, it will NEVER, be a "safe and stable currency" on its own, but it can be artificially; until a crisis. As much as the Saudis love gold, its not going to used because its a pain in the ass to use in such quantities, how many tons of gold would you have to move every day to pay for those billions in oil, and where the hell do you store it?

I don't know why you think they can go to war with the US or russia which can both deliver several thousand nuclear weapons on target in an hour when the chinks can deliver at most 400 and both the US and Russia have ABM system in place which can intercept up to 200 reentry vehicles. And that is forgetting the SM3 armed cruisers in the pacific which can target the ICBMs in the boost phase.

If the Chinks got put against the wall hard the one thing they will not do is go to war with the US or Russia, the two states which can destroy them and suffer very little damage in return.

Crimea will probably never be a profitable territory. They only took it to ensure Ukraine does not cut Russian navy off from Black Sea (as was planned shortly prior to the invasion, with US Navy stationed near black sea).
