After Civ 5, Beyond Earth, and XCOM 2 I've lost any faith in Firaxis. I had a vague glimmering of hope for them after EU/EW, but XCOM 2 destroyed that hope.

EU/EW was a good foundation of an XCOM game they should have broadened on and built more complexity, instead they threw in gimmicks and called them complexity, while streamlining and removing core features (i.e interrogations, interceptions, NO UFO INTERCEPTIONS IN A GAME ABOUT ALIENS).

Hyped for the next Civilization? Why? What did we get before?

The only neat thing about Civ V was the hexagon layout and the modding tools that were provided. I'll give kudos to that and if it were not for the latter, the game would be irredeemable.

Everything else was trash that only became edible trash after the "DLC", which was mostly paying extra just to get some of the Civ IV features back.

They were up to their tits in DLC for individual civilizations. Without a sale discount it would cost upwards of 30 bucks just to get all the official civs and you would STILL have less civilizations/leaders than Civ IV did with it's omnibus expansion/sanctioned mod that you can still find at retail stores near the Nancy Drew shit.

Over a hundred dollars just to get the base game proper if you actually bought things as they came out. You even had to pay almost 5 dollars for maps that were literally just grid data anyone could upload for free. Even EA shirks at their jewery.

And my god it was the most unoptimized piece of shit to ever use DirectX 11. The amount of time to just load the fucking start menu alone is atrocious, especially with the DLC. It's not even a mods issue - no - that is an entirely separate loading ordeal.

And then Beyond Earth.

Beyond Earth killed absolutely all credibility to the Sid Meier name. It's like branding your game with "Tim Shaffer" now.

It was nothing more than a Civ V mod with even further dumbed down mechanics parading as a 60 dollar game - and it dared to imply being a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri.

I kinda like it.

Each tile in Civ V had procedurally generated textures. For example, every fucking desert tile had a heightmap and some kind of contouring happen. It took a very long time to load because of this, even if you had low settings, since it needed to generate them on the fly.

It looks like more of the same, but they really refined the process so it looks nice. I'm glad they went with a cartoony, stylized look, rather than faux realism. It'll age better.

But we all know the gameplay will be incredibly simplified again, but visually I kinda like it.

Removing sliders/can't change the tax and science rate, removing ocean transports for land units (a mod fixed it), and making the game more combat focused so you can't do a no war challenge. Like some user said earlier. Earlier Civ games used your army to support your empire. Civ 5 has your empire to support your army.

You build a city on one hex, then you expand it with "districts" which work a tile automatically, making you expand "towards" the resources you want to work.
Also if you surround a district with others like it it levels up.
Also the map was separated to different "prefectures" where you could build one city and that city would essentially make the entire prefecture yours, though there can be some NPC minor faction villages, which unlike in Civ V aren't just idly standing by, they can give you missions which make them ally themselves with you and give you their own special unit as your auxiliary.
Or they could try to murder the fuck out of you, essentially unifying barbarians and city states together.

A lot of the ideas they are taking borrow from Endless Legend a game that absolutely humiliated firaxis, especially how the cities work. Honestly Endless Legend destroyed Civ 5 and Beyond Earth when it came out by showing how shit SHOULD be done.

I've kind of wanted this forever, being able to capture parts of cities when you besiege them and denying the use of facilities. Surrounding it and spamming guys on high-yield tiles to starve the city just isn't the same.

A followup with the expansion was done somewhere on the site. It pretty much amounted to "Happiness/Expansion is fucked the other way now, otherwise same problems as before"

The Good:
Elevation seems a bit more natural and varied.
Water looks better.
Animated waves.
Better lighting.
Sharper outlines and shadows.

The bad:
Colors are very saturated
Everything is enlarged and comical.
Eschews finer detail.

Far from what I wanted, but could be worse.
Maybe someday we will get what's in the third pic.

By the look of it, those are just hill tiles, with the rest of them being flat. I like the rocky coastlines though, maybe they'll actually prevent units from landing there.

The classical and ancient world was filled with people of varying ethnicities, and skin color was almost irrelevant to how people saw you. Greeks hated semites. They don't even have to go back in time. Just go to, say, China, and lecture people on racism. You'll find drastically different attitudes. Outside of the US and (sadly, now) Europe, you'll find tons of racism, but people don't really care about or think its a bad thing, except on a very general and idealistic level.

As an example, in China, sure, they have black immigrants and they treat them and view them like dirt, but they also treat the Uighurs, Tibetans, etc even worse, and have the same sort of sliding scale of disgust for peoples that differ from the Han median, with the lighter skin the better.

At any rate, I'm not sure how I feel about this new Civ announcement. Ed Beach did a pretty admirable job trying to salvage the shitshow that was Civ 5 vanilla, and I'm willing to write off the Beyond Earth team as Firaxis's retard containment division, but those graphics don't give me any sense of confidence, and as a history major, I have the sinking feeling that I'm going to watch my field of study get more shit shoveled into it as someone inevitably starts rewriting things in the name of their glorious political platform.

Either way, if you want new 4X just play Endless Legend or Age of Wonders 3. Civ is shit and if Firaxis keeps to their status quo, Civ VI will have less content than Beyond Earth and will run worse than XCOM 2.

This game is only like EL in graphical design, and even then, only superficially. It's closer to Civilization Revolution or Clash of Clans than Civ V or IV.
