No. It isn't. It's the same basic route but less polished and with less choices.

The alpha repair has 2 good Hanako routes, 1 epic Lilly route, and 1 way the hell better than the final Shizune route. That's it. Rin and Emi's routes have nothing new or interesting. There are differences in Rin's alpha route but they're not worth experiencing. All you get is an extra scene in a karaoke booth where nothing happens and that Rin wears headphones while she paints. That's it. Don't bother with it.

One of the girls in Grisaia is kinda like that. You should maybe look on vndb for characters with traits like perverted or maybe assertive or some deredere tags. It'll be a lot of work though since it's only kind of what you're looking for.

It seems like every time I play a VN it's a stretch to even call it "choose your own adventure story". There's usually just three rails and you just spam-click until you get to a good picture and then fap and be done with it.
It's really too bad LLtQ isn't an H-game, honestly. The complexity of that shit requires a mural-sized flowchart, and the sheer number of factors and events could make it an amazing H-scene easter egg hunt.

The main ones to stay away from are the MuvLuv VNs (Extra/Unlimited/Alternative): extra is pure slice of life shit, Unlimited is pure slice of life shit in a sc-fi/military setting and Alternative is pure "worst protag ever" shit. I also had an extremely strong dislike for Higurashi, which had a great start but such a poor ending that it left me in disgust.

So the smart beta basically says they'll wipe out humans, suck the earth dry of resources and move on, making co-existence impossible. Meiya decides to blow herself up. MC throws a hissy fit, refuses to sacrifice any of the girls to save humanity. Sumika gets tired of his shit and ejects out of the hive. Meiya blows up. Beta defeated.

Takeru gets sent back to his world. He has no memories of unlimited/alternative. Bunny girl sends herself and all the valkyries to takeru's world. Everyone's happy ever after. Bunny girl is the only one who remembers unlimited/alternative. The end.

Main point is that at the end. Takeru has the fate of his world and the beta world in his hands and absolutely refuses to make any sacrifices to save his species. In other words, he'd rather let billions of people die instead of sacrificing 5-6 ppl. The whole series is a build up of him becoming a stronger, better person but in the end he has no character growth and he remains the same little pampered faggot he was in the opening of Extra.

It's pretty much a collection of absurd plot twists that are pretty entertaining to follow. Its biggest flaw is that it absolutely must be overcomplicated at any point in the story (after the first hour), and you'll probably hate it at first like I did because all of the characters are over the top stereotypes. My roomate had begged me to play it and I slogged through the beginning 10 minutes at a time just to get her to stop annoying me about it, then I became interested after the first murder and VERY interested during the second.

This is the VN that made me like VNs which I hated before, and I still generally dislike anime despite it playing off of every anime trope in the book.

Oh also your favorite character will die, but that's not a spoiler because you'll probably have everyone as a favorite character at one point or another in the story, in the beginning I hated two of them in particular but by the end they were my favorite characters (also not a spoiler that they live, because some characters develop posthumously).

I find it absolutely ridiculous when people say shit like suggest learning a language to play a game when the process of learning a language well enough to actually understand every word of it (I don't count having a dictionary next to you where you check maybe 80% of the words as knowing a language) and all the nuance will take somewhere upto 10 years without you living around that language especially in the case of something like Japanese which has its own distinct culture that's tied to the language. I've studied russian in the past 9 or so months and although somewhat similar, it's a much simpler process to japanese and I can say with confidence that I would need at least 3-4 more years to actually get through a book or a game or a visual novel without any help and I feel like that's being generous.

I'm definitely not saying that learning a language for any reason is not worth it but it's frustrating that some people literally think it's as easy as reading a wiki page on some grammar.

I wonder how much it would cost to have someone who translates professionally or maybe someone who's studying to be a translator do a translation off the books.

So now I know that the term "Kinetic Novel" basically describes a VN or "video game" that has little to no interaction, and negligible choices at best that only offer one extra/unique line of dialogue immediately after it and have no effect on the story at all.

Is there a term for the other side of this coin, i.e. a VN or other heavily text-and-story driven game with a focus on dialogue choices, stat management, and maybe even time management?

Something just shy of Harvest Moon or a Persona game, but with the more traditional bits like combat and farming shaved off in favor of telling a more consistent and fluid story but still with plenty of character/dialogue/story choices so you can affect how certain characters develop or how relationships develop between characters if only in some minor way.

They're different in some key ways even aside from the demographics they're aimed towards but I recommend it if you can stomach BL. A lot of the people who were involved in making Saya no Uta were also involved in sweet pool. Sorry that I can't think of any other VNs that are close.

No Thank You!!! has both the best porn and the best plot of any VN I've played, BL or otherwise. It's written extremely well and the porn is varied and the guys are all cute. Helps that you play as an exclusive top instead of the typical BL helpless bottom fare. Haru is among my favorite protagonists for good reason. Don't be fooled, you might get bored a little bit through your first route but just finish it. The game gets fucking incredible after you finish a route, I was on the edge of my seat constantly. Definitely play Hiroyuki's route first even if he's not your type, you don't gain much by playing him later on whereas you definitely do with the other guys.

The point of pretty much every character centric novel, printed or visual, is the character growth and the story (which is why Dragonlance is so good while Sword of Truth is so shit). MuvLuv has a decent story once you get to alternative, but it completely misses the mark with character growth. If you spend over 100 hours reading a character's adventure, you expect that character to grow and be changed by what he or she has experienced. Takeru doesn't change, no matter how much horrific shit he goes through. Maybe if you had established a character with immovable morals or some such as your MC and put that character through that Takeru goes through, then maybe and just maybe you could get away with your character not changing.

But Takeru is just one dumb kid with nothing special going for him. People change throughout their lives, and traumatic events change people even more. The fact that Takeru DOESN'T change is extremely poor writing and extremely frustrating to deal with as a reader.

Why not? All a locale change does is change / to ¥ in file paths (you can still type paths with / though) and rarely some programs will have their installer start out in japanese. I've had my locale set to jap for good half a year now and I don't even play VNs much, I'm just too lazy to change it back since it doesn't really change anything. Only real annoyance for me has been that Vita's PC data manager thing set itself to japanese automatically and I didn't know how to change it to english.

Took me an hour to realize it read, "Wizard Links".

I've been going through Divi-Dead for the first time and so far I really enjoy the story and atmosphere. I like some of the finer details such as how the MC keeps mentioning the strange scent or the large number of janitors so you'll know there's something strange going on. Sometimes it comes close to beating you over the head but it's still more subtle than most VN's can manage. The translation is sloppy, making the fucking characters swear like fucking cool cats do, so that might be part of the problem.

But GOOD GOD DAMN did they fuck up the school navigation/plot progression part of the game. I like to think the devs knew this was a problem but couldn't come up with any real solution so they just shipped as it was. I realize you can't just put quest markers everywhere in a thriller/mystery story because it destroys the sense that you are exploring and stumbling onto things yourself, but the alternative of just cycling through every area until you get an event and then do it again over and over is really aggravating. Especially when some of the events are menial things like "I went to the gym and saw a black cat. It ran away when it saw me." The game will give you context clues like "meet X character at the library" but you still have to go event trolling a lot before that all while checking back at the library to see if that event is finally available.

tl;dr Divi-Dead is a pain to actually play, but the story is good and that's what matters

I'm near the end of my first playthrough and I'm sad to say the translation tanked hard near the end. It was pretty close to Duwang tier. They constantly fuck up matching the character names with who is speaking and it makes conversations hard to follow. I get the basic gist of what's going on but a lot of details are lost on me. On the bright side the H-scenes are translated so terribly it's hilarious. You get some great one-liners like "I'm gonna blast!" and they keep calling each other "babe" like it's a shitty western porno.

The lewds are rare and not worth playing the game for alone. Fortunately the overarching story is pretty clever in a meta sense.
The girls range from witty and beautiful, to dull yet pleasant, to obnoxious little shits, to psychopathic yanderes.
