Embed is a "review" of it from someone who plays a lot of these games and is actually very good at them. Conclusion seems to be that it fixes the vertical difficulty curve many /gsg/s have by adding 4X elements at the start of the game, giving more of a sense of progression. Downside is lacking different win conditions and some optimization issues on large maps.

In good games the mechanics interact with each other in a way that creates challenges and engaging gameplay.
Look at Spiderman 2 for example.
The webswinging allows the player to move between buildings at high speeds. The wallrunning allows the player to run along buildings at high speeds.
In combination this allows the played to swing from a lower building towards a higher building and use the wallrunning to climb the extra distance. This adds the challenge of guessing the height a player can gain by chaining swinging and wallrunning. It also adds to the gameplay by allowing the player to move more freely.
Overall, a good combination.

You can both enslave and purge them (unless you pick the xenophiliac trait, I think, but you wouldn't be that dumb, would you?)

Other nations can't cross your borders unless you give them the permission, if that's what you mean

You can mark pops for purging, which should remove them over time, if the tooltip can be trusted (didn't try it yet). As for social management, pops can form factions inside your empire (kind of like various legal movements and the like) and try gathering political suppport. In democracies, they might try to get some sympathetic president into the seat, in autocracies they might revolt, etc. Each race has its own politics that will guide them when picking a faction, as will the distance from capital and overall happiness.

You have three basic resources (minerals, energy credits, and influence) and then some strategic resources which IDK what they do since I haven't taken one yet, but I assume they work like the ones in Civ. It's a lot less complex than in Distant Worlds

You can trade with other empires and jew them for resourcs or technology, if that's what you mean.

The leader has a life-longevity variable, so you can make them immortal, the default galaxy is big enough to house the races (but it can always be made bigger. 5k stars galaxies when?) and the pops options for genocide are already there. You can either mine for resources by building mining stations on ninhabitable planets and asteroids, or by developing your colonies (each inhabited planet has a set amount of tiles which you can develop the way you want). Other empires always try to jew you on a deal.

I really like ck2, when it was in its heyday. Now, its kinda sad to see how far it went. Paradox's idea of adding and adding more things to the game, should have had a limit. In my opinion, when they hurt the performance of the game by adding india, and then made things worse with infamy sliders, and female leaders and generals, and worse "gender options", etc. I just like all faith in the game. the best version, and the only one I play, is 2.01. With the old gods,merchant republic,etc dlc.
Playing as Jarl Halfdan the Whiteshirt of Jorvik, and taking enemy queens as my concubines, there is something great about that. Being the last viking on the british isles and all, a decendant of Ragnar himself.

Is the Military Dictatorship/Martial Empire government type worth it for the once-per-lifetime supercap? I heard it's just a large version of one of your largest class designs with upscaled stats. Beside that, the Martial Empire seems worth it for maintaining a very large military buildup, but the Junta/Stratocracy type seems better for actually acquiring said buildup and keeping one's fleet state-of-the-art with the modest -20% ship cost bonus and the huge -50% upgrade cost bonus. I'm a little torn as to which is logistically more useful in general, although the autocracy would probably be better once one reached a critical mass in empire size. But at that point it wouldn't really matter, and the supercap would be icing on the cake of being so strong that you can eat those upgrade costs in the tail end of the effectively won game. Am I right, or is there something I'm missing?

It's very stuttery but that's apparently due to Paradox being Paradox, not any particular hardware. As always, Paradox games are heavy on CPUs.

It's more fun than star drive II and don't even bring that disgrace gc3 into this.

Feels real bad man

I played 13 hours of it. That's not so long so I'll keep it short. It's a bit simple, but it's way better than EUIV and CKII in their current states. Vicky II is still better though, its handling of POPs and resources in particular are miles ahead of Stellaris. DW is the funner game all around, but it's had 4 expansions.

There are a few things that really bother me at the moment :

1) there's no trading outside of that which you do yourself via the diplomatic screen. No trade fleets, no interdictions, no embargo, definitely no private sector. The only private sector thing I've seen to date is a tech you get if you are an individualist, you get a cheaper private colony ship that builds faster, but you can't choose the ethos of the POP that boards it.

2) no espionage, but we all knew that. The only thing close to espionage you can do is infiltrate an industrial primitive civ and annex them outright after a length of time. As it actually was supposed to be in the main game, I'll be very disappointed if this is a DLC (probably will be).

3) Paradox again fell into their age-old bullshit that more land is always better than less land, so there's never any reason not to expand or conquer everything you see, unless you're role-playing. Techs are cheaper if you have less POPs, but larger empires obviously generate more science.

4) resource gathering is really generic, it's nothing less than build stations everywhere like fucking GalCiv3 and its starbases. Even surface resource gathering kind of plays the same as in GC3.

5) there seems to be only 3 late-game crises which are all basically Sunset Invasion, so much for no two game playing the same. I was hoping there would be many more than that.

6) sectors are basically putting parts of your empire on autopilot, that they're enforced is pretty bad.

Depth-wise I would rate it about the same as EUIV at release. Bads will get curbstomped by the AI fast, but if you've played other Parajew games or if you take a bit of time to learn how to play, it's much harder to lose.

Not worth a buy, but maybe a pirate.

Also, I think large empires are really static. There just isn't much happening on the internal side, even if it's full of xenos and nobody has the right ethics. Basically if you get big enough, you win.

It doesn't help that in typical Parajew manner, slaves can't rebel at the moment, so even if your POPs become too unruly (they won't), if you enslave them they can't do shit except work harder.

Possibly, but CK2 and Eu4 don't let you play with others on LAN, I've tried.

If that's true, then I don't think Stellaris will let you either. I'll try it out later though.

It seems you have to be connected to the internet to play LAN which is some serious bullshit

pirated versions of games sometimes get patches for enabling lan if it's set up like that so you should wait for that if it's not enabled. It's kind of silly when that happens, a pirated version of the game will give you better usability than a game you pay for. By trying to stop piracy they literally promote it.
