Few days ago they were putting slurry to prevent erosion, but it failed after the sinkhole undermined that whole plan. Rocks are the current meme.

Not only that but what they did was dump a bunch of large rocks into the hole (the hole in front of the emergency spillway) and dump 'concrete slurry' over it. I cant find much on it but from what I understand the slurry mix is not particularly strong at all.

But its inconsequential because they havent done a damned thing to address that huge area of erosion from the spillway that is digging into that piece of mountain in front of the actual dam. That hole has been getting blasted with 100,000 cubic feet of water per second for the past 5 days. Its gonna be fucking good m8

The spillway is already obliterated, the best they can hope for is the upper part doesn't disintegrate. The water has already torn away one side of the spillway all the way down to the bottom. Its a given it will collapse completely.
If water starts creeping upwards the entire spillway will collapse and at that point having a dam at all won't even matter anymore.

At the current rate the of 100k cfs, the lake drops like 4 inches a hour? or something like that so I dont think enough rain is going to be enough because of the rate they have been pumping through the main spillway. So 1 foot of rain wont cut it but for how long the rest of the raining season we might expect some flooding.

I think it dropped a few feet already so we have to be lucky if they use the emergency spillway.

You do realize that the lake takes in more water than directly falls on it? Anything that falls on the mountains near it, runs in to the lake. The amount it will take is far greater than however many inches will fall. Also the rain will melt some of the snow on the mountains as well, further increasing the inflows. Why do you think they wanted to drop the lake levels by 50 feet if theyre only getting < 1 foot of rain over the next week?

They're basically only fixing the emergency spillway. They can't do anything with the main spillway at all, the bottom half is gone and it would take months to fix.

They arnt using it because it will break and 20 feet of the lake will just pour out. So really its a lose/lose because the water behind the spillway is still getting thrown out the lake and a spillway is being damaged, if they used the emergency spillway then it might have broke and all that water would have stilled went downstream anyways but in a greater force.

I just realized something. People are saying that the concrete is not steel reinforced. With the bottom chunk of the ramp missing, that's a lot of weight on a steep slope. There can be a happening of unanticipated proportions.

Are there any up to date pictures of the spillway? Everything I can find is from 2-3 days ago so I can't gauge how much erosion is taking place. The fact that the part of the spillway below the crater hasn't washed out entirely is a good sign for their chances of making it through this, but they're going to have to flow it hard from now through the end of snow melt. Also does anyone know what the maximum level that the spillway can drain to is? I'm guessing 850 ft.

OK, so I've found 8 dams upstream of Oroville, wanting to see if they were holding back water to lessen the inflow into the Oroville Dam, and only 3 of them have reported any data since the 8th.

The ones reporting are Antelope Dam, Frenchman Dam and Grizzly Valley Dam. None of them seem to have done anything significant since Oroville started and they are currently reporting 109 %, 75 % and 92 % of nominal capacity.

Not that I found. I would have assumed they would stop the outflow for a short while each day to check the damage, but they are not doing that. What I know is that they claim the erosion at the spillway has hit the bedrock and has thus stabilized. The water flowing down hill is more or less clear which supports this.
As for the station not reporting, maybe buffer overflow?

Any idea if those dams have that old earthen "controlled failure" measures, where if they overflow they slowly fail and erode away, because they were only meant to be temporary dams?

There was one of these information videos I watched looked like footage from the 60's 70's showing how one of the small shitty dams failed by design on accident but the big dam was able to handle it.

Well, it looks like the view the “sunlight reflection” of a couple days ago was really a breach in the sidewall of the main spillway. The main spillway is like a H with the main water flow groove, and a side wall on both sides to keep the water flowing down the central channel.
If I understand what I am seeing here, up above the original “hole,” back towards the spillway top, on the left side, you had a FAILURE of some of the concrete wall sections. This allowed the water to DIVERT from the main “channel, and shift left OUTSIDE THE CONCRETE CHANNEL, AND START ERODING, DIRECTLY ERODING THE DIRT THAT IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE SPILLWAY. The situation is you now have TWO SEPARATE DOWNSTREAM WATER FLOWS: THE FIRST ONE INSIDE THE SPILLWAY AND THE SECOND ONE EXITING THE WALL BREACH AND ERODING AWAY THE HILLSIDE, OR EVEN GOING BACK UNDER THE MAIN SPILLWAY AND CAUSING FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE CONCRETE SLABS ETC.
Yep, it is now a done deal in my opinion. The failure of the main spillway is now INEVITABLE. It will eventually fail, all the way from the sidewall breach, the one between/below the power lines, and the top of the spillway.
The erosion undercut going back up towards the spillway top, on the left side first, a day or so ago, and IT IS LIKELY CUTTING UNDER THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE MAIN SPILLWAY AND WILL LIKE CAUSE A SEPARATE BREACH ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SPILLWAY WALL.
The whore media and politicians will spin this as best as they can, but we are going to see criminal charges out of this down the road. The failure to issue a mandatory evacuation order is an act of moral cowardice, cynical political opportunism and will destroy California for a generation. Nowski, amigo I am saying the state of Jefferson is going to be born out of this, since the hatred of the deplorables for that SCUMBAG GOVERNOR MOONBEAM HAS DONE TO THEM WILL HAVE NO LIMIT.
The main highway/freeway is I-5 and over it comes the tens of thousands of trucks that supply the “I-5 Corridor.” The rail lines are also linked to the I-5 corridor and carry every thing the entire coastal PNW, Portland, Seattle need.

pretty sure I saw on the news last year some parts of California that had all the farmers drilling deeper and deeper wells until the cost of digging even deeper wells became too expensive. At the same time some areas of land were starting to sink down a bit as the underground water reservoirs were empty and collapsing on themselves without the support of the water.
If there was a way to run a large pipe system to these areas they could just pump it back down all the well bore holes. I'm sure one of the reports said the underground water reserves had taken millions of years to fill up but only decades to deplete.

The problem is aquifers are so great because they sort filter the water as it dribbled in; but if they just cut a hole and let it all flow in the water would be dirty and polluted as fuck. It wouldn't solve California's water problems, and would only make them much, much worse in the long run.

To go from a level of 850 to 875 will take a net inflow of about 25000 ft^3/s for one whole week.
Running the outflow at 75000, means you can handle an inflow of 100,000 ft^3/s or about 8260 acre-feet/hour for a weak an still only have a 25 ft rise.

The previous ones peak about 24 hours after the rain whereas in this case it started to drop even before the rain peaked. People have looked into it and it seems at least some of the 5 reservoirs that have stopped reporting are filled to the brim.
