I don't see the appeal. Even when it's a genuinely funny and entertaining streamer playing a good game, 90% of the time nothing of interest is happening. In the best case scenario, you spend hours watching for what amounts to about half an hour of good bits in total.

The athleticism, organization, and mechanical skill are all part of the competition. They mesh to bring the gameplay to "a level" of performance the average person will never reach in any venue. This is why pro sports, and indeed pro vidya, can be interesting to watch. Same reason people watch fire breathers or virtuoso musicians.

Girlgamer streams do not satisfy any of these criteria (i guess missharvey is okay at CS though [but still trash compared to pros who went pro by their gameplay's merit instead of their blonde hair and vagoo]). I will watch/listen to some streams for basically the commentary on the game or if there are multiples (like the RLM guys) for the banter they have.
Its great background for when i'm doing mindless tasks or whatever. Its always interesting to get that other view of a game. I don't go after the ones who are obviously acting on their streams. Save that shit for edited videos or something.

But more than that, I also stream. Some of you may have seen my streams here (although lately my threads keep getting deleted).
The reason I do it is not for fame or money, I realized that dream was dead long ago. I do it now for the chat.
I like to talk to people about video games. Doing it here is nice but doing it live is a whole other thing because you can actually talk about specific parts/areas that you are currently seeing.
And honestly, it was through the bits of friendships and the recurring viewers that I started learning and playing a bunch of other games.
I wouldn't have ever played God Hand, for instance, if it wasn't for suggestions from viewers. I wouldn't have played Dark Souls, I wouldn't have bothered to go through the complete DMC series (only having ever beat 4, previously).
These days I only really stream like maybe once a week when I get bored, feel like chatting about a game i've been playing, or maybe have something neat to show. Hell, since all my friends are scattered it makes a great substitute for the movie nights I used to have when I put on some movies and chat with people.
2 or 3 talkative people is worth more than 50 silent viewers to me. Is there a loneliness aspect? Maybe.

Anyway, that's just my two cents as someone who has been streaming for years and isn't in any way popular or known.

I'm OK with streamers who try and break the game as much as possible, or add some humour to the game. Then again I only watch The Best Gamers and occasionally Vinesauce.
Playing vidya is still better, I only watch streams when I'm too ill to concentrate.

When I run my movie streams it is to show a few movies. Maybe string them along with a theme, maybe some old favorite of mine that others may have not seen. Maybe something random just because (much fun happens from netflix's usual collection of shitty movies).

But its never them watching ME watch a movie. Its all of us watching the movie together. I just happen to host/control it.
But the main point is just having that chat. I might use my control for a joke or two from putting video game music (Nuclear kind of goes with anything really) or cut to credits at a point where in the real world the plot line would have been finished.
Or the most recent endevour, finding 6 different songs and their perfect points where they line up with the best scene in the latest star wars, that spinny stormtrooper guy's fight with black jedi.

I only watch Let's Plays of games that I am unlikely to ever play (IE: games on systems I have no plans on buying) or games that I have already played. As to the latter, I suppose it's somewhat like showing a movie you really like to a friend and wanting to hear their reaction to it. It can be entertaining depending on the game and the LPer, good way to waste half an hour a day.

1. Sometimes I wanna see gameplay (real, non shilled) before buying a game.

2. Sometimes I wanna see a game that I either can't or don't want to run myself, like particular mods or console exclusives.

3. Sometimes, very rarely, the person playing is actually fun to watch.

That said the major people on Twitch and YT are pretty much cancer incarnate because they make money with that shit and need to bend over for all the kids and retards that make up their fanbase. Lowest common denominator and such, hence why Pewdz got so big.

For me, I've already given up on trying to play and finish every game in existence. Some games are ones I also played in the past and want to see how other people look at it, in particular 'Blind' Let's Plays. I fully prefer not to have any face-cams or the like with those, though.

Sometimes, even the 'watch easily scared people play horror games' work pretty well. For me it's the "Scary Games Squad" of Jesse Cox, for example, a lot of humor for me to be found as they also try to discuss things that are only somewhat related to the game, or deeply discuss the story trying to figure it out before the Big Reveal(s).

I only watch streams of people who tell stories while playing or are otherwise entertaining.

I usually keep streams or long youtube videos on my second screen while surfing or gaming on my main screen. Having background noise is nice and my attention span is so fucking short at this point that I have to do at least two things at once to avoid being bored.
