The big selling point of the Mega Textures (Virtual Texturing) was to never have to see same texture again in game world. The id Tech 6 uses sparse voxel octree apparently and they've partially virtualised the level geometry with it. SVO could at least in theory give their level designers more freedom to do wacky stuff.

On game consoles you can just put the disc in and start playing. On a PC you put the disc in, install 8 GBs of data from it and then download the rest before you can play it. Also OP, if you think PC is fucked the most you are wrong. A friend of mine has a 500gb PS4 and he literally can't have more than six games on it since the system takes over a hundred gb. So, if he wants to play a new game he has to delete one or two of the old ones. And if he deletes the old ones then the next time he plays it he has to redownload all the dlc, which there are a fucking lot for some games.

The problem with megatextures is not that they are uncompressed, but that assets that should technically have identical textures (say, columns) each have their own texture allocation, essentially copypasting the same texture multiple times over the megatexture. This bloats the texture size unnecessarily, as the same identical effect could be achieved by just reusing a single high-resolution texture.

GTA5 shipped 7 DVDs, they were broken when I got them, I had to copy all the files over to hard drive as disc authentication kept fucking up. It took 6 Hours to install. Once it installed off HDD which was faster than doing it via DVD it then required an additional 8GB download…..
