I actually started playing through Doom for more or less the first time recently, got through the first three episodes on UV. E4M1 was way more difficult than everything else, got to go and try it again.

Any recommendations for changing the default settings in ZDoom for the Doom games? I turned off auto aim (why is this on by default?), changed crouch/jump/free look from default to off, turned the limit on pain elementals lost souls back on, turned off enemies not being able to see you with partial invisibility, and turned on wallrunning. Also changed the automap colors to traditional Doom and changed a ton of the control options.

You fags do realize that doom is free and libre, right? The game has been released under the GPL. Even before that, the shareware was given away for free (well, sort of, they gave it to markets for free with an msrp) because of a video game ban scare due to Columbine. You young fags are technically not pirating anything.

The best engine to play doom on is doomsday. Makesvit easy to handle mods too.

Haven't played much, but I feel that Unloved is probably the best you can do in terms of horror wads. Any heavier and you really should be looking for a different engine.

I played Brutal Doom from the beginning to see what were the mods like, and since I liked it, I kept it. But I didn't know it changed the gameplay, I just played it because of the gore that added more satisfaction when killing enemies. Are there any other wads that adds gore ?

It's an action-horror wad in the vein of They Hunger and stuff. Straight combat against spooky enemies in a spooky environment. It works to the doom engine's strengths, and works to the best within doom's limitations. You can do a lot within the doom engine, but if you try and ignore what it is you're using, things don't fucking work. Hunter's Moon is a Quake 3 mod that tries to work in the doom engine, and things work horribly. You try and make something like Silent Hill or House of the Dead within the engine's limitations, and things go horribly.

You can get a sourceport for Doom with fully modern controls and modern resolutions, I still can't find one for Quake.

I think it's aged better than Quake. More FPS games followed Quake's formula than Doom's, many people would consider it stale by today's standards.

Doom 2 adds a new weapon and new enemies. Most of them having some new mechanics with a few reskins/restats. Maps are a bit more varied too.

Regardless, it was more of an expansion pack than a full on sequel.

It's not really a big deal considering in modern ports you have free mouse look without autoaim. The fact that the game is still good with autoaim it's a little hint that the game wasn't really like a modern FPS but a super advanced asteroids game. The game is all about positioning, resource usage, and weapon choice, not aiming. That's a pretty big fucking difference that changes everything about how the game is designed and it is not mentioned in the picture.

Autoaim in Doom is a product of the time, and makes perfect sense in the original release of the game. Vertical autoaim was required for it to be playable with mouseturn only, and horizontal autoaim was for keyboard players.

There are a few mods that support Hexen out the box, like:
Trailblazer
Necrodoom
Psychic
Guncaster, IIRC, supports Hexen.

Hexen maps, though, are VERY hit n' miss. Wrath of Chronos is one of the better ones. Scourge of Viscerus is good too. But there are some fucking bad ones too.

I just played one that surprise-teleported you into a small arena where you had to fight the mage miniboss with his bullshit homing supermissiles. And the arena was lined with instagib teleport traps. And you can't use 'resurrect' in Hexen when gibbed.

There's probably more you could do, but that's what I could think of at the moment.

People mostly talk about gameplay mods in these threads, but what cosmetic mods do people use? The ones I use that I would recommend everyone at least try are smooth doom and pk doom sfx. The main thing smooth doom does is give enemies additional frames of animation, making their walking, death, and attack animations smoother. It has a lot of other options too, like giving possessed marines slightly varying appearances between each other, or giving weapons doom 64 skins. Pk doom sfx is basically a guy recreating the original doom sounds as close as possible but with higher sound quality.

DHTP and Beautiful doom are two I'm kind of torn on. Smooth doom does most of what I like about beautiful doom already, but has some nice extras, like HD pickups. DHTP does what you expect pretty decently, replacing wall textures with high res versions. Whether you like or hate these two probably depends on how fine you are with mixing low res and high res sprites and textures.

Particle Fire Enhancer does a lot of things I like, and a lot of things I hate. Despite its name, it changes a lot of little stuff besides fire particles. Oddly, what I like from it most are the new sounds, which are from doom 3 and quake 4. There are a couple little things I like too, like how it makes barrel explosions create debris. The bad is that it uses a lot of really garish colored lighting, and barrels emit green gas particles and hissing noises that are kind of distracting.

Right now, I'm looking for a decent high resolution font replacement, mainly to improve readability. I found one, but their choice of fonts is kind of ugly. Also, HD doom guy is kind of scary.

Original has a mouse support that allows you to move with the mouse, look left and right, strafe, shoot, etc. But it won't let you look up and down since it's an engine limitation. It was over come in Heretic with a new hack and since the source code release people have made significant improvements to the Doom engine allowing the weirdest shit ever… "Room above room" to happen… in Doom…

I think it was due to vertical auto aim. For whatever reason, playing fps games without being able to look up and down makes playing with a controller feel more natural.

I think hypothetically, a doom game with a good upgrade system could be made. For example, something built similarly to the doom rouge like arsenal mod. In it, you could convert weapons into other weapons by attaching the correct modules to it. These were more sidegrades than upgrades mostly. For example, a standard shotgun could be converted to an elephant gun, which shot slugs instead of pellets. The rocket launcher could be converted into the micro launcher, which fired much faster but did less damage per shot. To prevent it from breaking the flow of the game, a player could only mess with this between levels.

Alternately, it could maybe be done in the metroidvania way where you got items as you progress that fundamentally alter how weapons or other things work. The backpack in doom 1 and 2 is kind of like this. Sort of.

A month ago I started playing doom for the first time using chocolate doom. After wanting to try multiplayer I switched to Zandronum. I ended up using it for the Episodes 3 & 4. I read in the charts that I should be using ZDoom.

What are the singleplayer benefits for switch from Zandronum to ZDoom?

I wanted to have a mostly vanilla experience but the things I liked about Zandronum were:
- High resolution 1920 x 1080 (Although I would like to play using a 4:3 aspect ratio for a more realistic FOV but Zandronum doesn't fully support this)
- Autosave between levels (I don't really like losing my entire inventory when I die. It makes all the work that goes into finding all the secrets feel pointless)
- Autorun (This feature may have been in chocolate doom I'm not sure)

I also turn off Freelook and Autoaim to give the game a more vanilla feel.

Are lost souls supposed to be transparent I don't remember them being that way in Chocolate doom?

A list of settings you guys change would also be greatly appreciated.

Zandronum is a bit behind zdoom in terms of modding capabilities and functions. Other than that it's the exact same engine with better netcode

Zandronum is based on GZdoom, not Zdoom, you can't OpenGL in ZDoom it's Software rendering only.

To specify a little, I think it is based on both, they pull changes from both projects, but the main difference is in the OpenGL capabilities from GZDoom.

Mods being compatible with each other is a very, very rare thing. One example of that'd be DoomRPG and Doom Roguelike Arsenal. LegenDoom and Colorful Hell are compatible.


Best randomizer at this point would probably be the aforementioned LegenDoom, Colorful Hell and DRLA. I dunno if DoomRPG could be classified as a randomizer?

An older good randomizer would be 667 Shuffle. Others might suggest Aeons of Death to you, but I've never been a big fan of it, as it has a lot of very visually disparate assets and poor rips, and an ass-ugly HUD. Your mileage may vary.

yeah I watched at the threads, the mix of those both seems to give a very neat roguelike doom.
However, there gotta be some sort of issue with my system, because I can't make DoomRPG work for shit. I mean this as in it absolutely lags the fuck out whenever I'm in game. I got all that stuff and I'm having a DECORATE crash when I try to launch the game with GZDoom, tried looking around, tried different versions of the program, I can't make it work for the life of me. Oh well.

I also thought it would be neat to bring into light another randomizer that I tried some time ago but would also makes my laptop suffers anyway. Did anyone heard about Score Doom ? The bestiary is huge and that's what got me into playing it.

If you want to play vanilla style use Chocolate Doom. That's what I play it on and I love it. Especially with the GUS sound enabled. Also, 2 good custom WADs I've played : Return to starun X and Alien Vendetta - This one is hard as fuck towards the end and is a bit confusing, some doors or switches lack the color of the keycard they require and they don't display the message that you need the key, so few times I thought it's just a decoration.

Rarely, a monster will go berserk and regain their HP and become stronger as well. Killing this monster will drop a weapon which has a randomized crazy special effect, like making healing items restore more HP, or doing more damage to imps & archviles, etc.

To balance that out, some monsters in a map can become legendarified, making them much much more dangerous.

Yes. Difficulty levels were made with keyboard controls and lack of vertical aiming in mind. If you're playing on source port, play on UV and turn off the autoaim in options.

Started playing DOOM 64 and shit, that guide isn't joking when it says it's the real DOOM 3. Everything looks more industrial and dark, the level music is atmospheric like the Quake soundtrack, the enemy designs look different but pretty cool.

And the levels all fell like DOOM.

If you really want to try it, play Project Brutality, which is a mod of Brutal Doom. Most people here like it better, although it apparently has stolen gore sprites from another mod.

The original Doom engine could not deal with a vertically changing viewpoint at all. I think the explanation has to do with how it draws things on the screen. It draws the screen in vertical columns. This is reasonably fast when the view moves from side to side as the engine only has to draw one column at a time, but if the view changes up and down it would have to update all the columns at the same time which would make the engine chug (on the wimpy machines of the day).

Thing is, you just can't have proper freelook in Doom engine, because it works in such way that walls are always parallel to the screen. Heretic had some way to fake free look, but angle was extremely limited. Even in ZDoom and Zandronum with software rendering aiming angle is limited and everything looks weird when it's too high.

It's about positioning and ammo management more than twitch shooting and what have you. Also, exploration.

It's not a terrible mod in of itself, but it's garnered a somewhat negative reputation due to the shitty fanbase it's brought into Doom. It can be pretty fun, but as stated, Project Brutality does it better. It's also not perfect, and fucks with some of the inherent balance of the game. Still, fun for stupid, loud romps when you want to blow off some steam.

Probably one of the most entertaining things (to me, anyway) to come from Doom came from Brutal Doom+Oblige, actually. Was wandering down a super dark hallway, figuring I'd be gunned down by a chaingunner. Instead, I see a shotgunner's corpse flying at me at 100 sanics- to which, after barely dodging it, is followed up by a revenant's fireball. Turns out Brutal Doom lets them throw corpses when they kill other demons with melee.

ZDoom. its just a program that runs doom wads but with all the upgraded settings and options. it even has the option to turn off vertical look for mouse, while still keeping mouselook.

You can customize your controls in almost any source port.

You want GZdoom for proper mouselook/vertical mouseaim. The rest is just a question of settings.

Do note that this does make certain wads easier than they are supposed to be as it'll be easier to hit distant targets at different elevations.

ZDoom's raycast; GZDoom renders in true 3d, and has support for Quake 3 models. GZ3Doom, yet another fork, can also render in anaglyph or stereoscopic 3d.


It's not really autoaim. Hitboxes had infinite height on account of the raycaster not being true 3d. This is also why rooms never overlap. and explain it better than I can though, if you want a less stilted explanation.
