WoW started the cartoony overdone cancer and ruined fantasy art, Portal founded Reddit humour. Two cancers that now are almost omnipresent in the monthly shovelware moba tripe, but sadly also spread to other genres.

I tell ya, there's just no winning. The generic realism most games use is bad because it's generic realism that at best, totally wastes the creative visual potential of video game designs. And usually it's wasted potential and makes everything uglier than real life at the same time. Either way, real life gives me enough realism, thank you very much. But when games do something else these days, they're totally stupid in a different way like in OP, so I'm screwed either way. We have the best graphics ever and they're wasted on the worst art direction ever, it sucks. I'm sick of just tolerating the art direction of games at best. This is NOT the future I imagined when I pictured how cool games would look eventually.

Yeah, it is weird. I saw those characters first in 3D porn and initially assumed some 3D porn animator finally showed some initiative and modeled some OCs. The designs didn't really wow me much but still kudos for trying. Only later found out they were from some game. I've never seen porn jump the gun by that much.
